Busan pork soup with chunky spicy dadaegi: Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap

It's been about four years now that I've been eating around the Kyungsung University-Pukyong National University campus area. Since I'm really about to graduate, it's a bit sad to think I'll have to say goodbye to the restaurants I've frequented one by one ㅠㅠ

So today I want to introduce Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap, a place I often visit when I'm craving pork soup near campus! You just walk a little from Exit 1 of Kyungsung Univ-Pukyong National Univ Station. Even walking slowly, it's about a 5-minute walk, so accessibility is pretty great.

Why pick Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap among the pork soup spots near Kyungsung University?

Honestly, there are quite a few famous dwaeji gukbap places around here, but I personally prefer clean, well-managed spots over old-school hole-in-the-wall vibes, so I end up coming back to Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap often.

Especially in this early-autumn weather — still warm midday but cooler mornings and evenings — a warm bowl of gukbap (soup with rice) is even more appealing haha. There's always signage in front of the shop like this whenever I visit.

Dwaeji gukbap and sundae gukbap (blood sausage soup) are ₩9,500, hangjeong gukbap is ₩11,500, and suyuk baekban (boiled pork set) is ₩13,000. The prices aren't too heavy for a meal in a university area.

There's also something quietly fun about coming to Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap — the welcome drink! They give you a cup of Jipyeong Saeng Makgeolli. I had plans after eating so I couldn't drink it that day, but if you like alcohol, having a light cup before the soup arrives sounds great haha.

Unlimited rice and noodle refills: how much two people ate

Just like it says, rice and noodle add-ins are unlimited. As we ate, we kept adding more rice and noodles… lol. The two of us really ate a ton 🥹

One bowl of gukbap alone is already filling, but being able to add noodles on top makes this a great spot for hungry college students.

Free sundae or dumplings from the Naver review event

There was a time we got greedy and tried both sundae and dumplings, and we nearly burst… 😂 Getting carried away because everything's tasty can end in regret, so eating in moderation really is best haha.

Inside Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap: atmosphere and the self-serve bar

The interior is clean overall and there are quite a lot of tables. Since it's a gukbap restaurant, table turnover is fast, so even if you have to wait briefly during peak meal times, a seat tends to open up sooner than you'd expect.

Near the entrance, they sometimes leave the windows open depending on the weather. In this cool early-autumn breeze, having the windows open feels open and not stuffy at all — I liked it personally. We sat by the window and had a relaxed meal that day.

The basic side dishes come out prepared like this, and you can grab more from the self-serve bar if you run out. Rice and noodle add-ins are also there, so if you need more while eating, don't hesitate to help yourself!

How the chunky dadaegi changes the pork soup broth

There's a good amount of meat in the soup and it was tender, so the texture was nice too. Above all, there was barely any of the gamey smell you worry about with pork soup, so it was clean and easy to eat haha.

The meat is plenty tasty, but if I had to pick my favorite thing about Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap, it would be the dadaegi (chili paste condiment)!! Compared to dadaegi I've had elsewhere, this one has slightly chunkier bits and a somewhat runnier texture. Stir a proper amount into the soup and the broth turns spicy, completely changing the flavor.

Personally, I prefer eating it with dadaegi mixed in rather than plain. Alternating a spoonful of soup with a spoonful of rice, at some point you start sweating a little from how spicy and refreshing it is — really delicious. Especially in this cooling morning-and-evening weather, a hot, spicy broth just fits even better.

Who is Geumsu Dwaeji Gukbap best for?

This is a solid choice for university students or office workers nearby who need lunch around Kyungsung Univ-Pukyong National Univ. Since it's a gukbap place, turnover is fast even during peak hours, and with unlimited rice and noodle refills plus the review event, it's a great deal for a filling meal.

But don't think it's just about quantity! The broth is clean and the meat is tender, so it's a satisfying and tasty meal. It's a familiar favorite for those of us who've lived around Kyungsung Univ-Pukyong National Univ for a long time, and I think it's an easy recommendation for first-time visitors too.

As far as I know, there's no dedicated parking support. It seems people sometimes park briefly in front depending on the situation, but since that's not certain, if you're visiting by car, I'd recommend checking with the restaurant beforehand or using a nearby paid parking lot.
