I was looking for a beef restaurant in Jamsil that also had good atmosphere, and that's how I ended up at Sutbul Seonghwa. It's a place where you grill dry-aged beef over charcoal, but unlike a typical Korean BBQ joint, it also has a solid lineup of whiskies and highballs — that combination is what made me curious.

Inside Sutbul Seonghwa Jamsil: atmosphere and private rooms

The restaurant was spacious and open. The interior felt clean and modern overall, quite different from a typical BBQ place, and the tables were spaced generously enough that I didn't feel crowded by neighboring seats. Light poured in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, giving the space a bright, open feel. With the wide, clean layout and calm, upscale atmosphere, I could see why it's popular for family dinners, dates, and gatherings.

There are also private rooms on one side of the restaurant for a more intimate meal — great for family dinners or taking your parents out, and also good for company dinners or group gatherings where you want a quieter space. There's group seating and individual rooms.

1++ hanwoo on show in the glass-walled aging room

What really caught my eye was the meat-aging fridge. Sutbul Seonghwa has a glass-walled aging fridge so you can actually see the beef being stored inside. Through the glass I could spot large cuts of hanwoo (Korean beef), along with the 1++ grade marking, domestic origin label, weight, and traceability number! Since Sutbul Seonghwa's whole concept is enjoying aged beef alongside whisky, the aging fridge really fit the vibe of the place. Seeing those big cuts aging inside the fridge built up my expectations for the meat quality before I'd even ordered. If you like meat, it's the kind of thing you'll stop and peek at as you walk by.

Whisky and highball lineup, plus the 'Whisky of the Day'

Another fun part of Sutbul Seonghwa was the drinks lineup. They had everything from whisky to wine to champagne, and one side of the restaurant is set up like an actual bar, so your eyes naturally drift there even while eating. I spotted Yamazaki, Hakushu, Macallan, Royal Salute, Kavalan, and more on display.

What especially caught my attention was the 'Suntory Highball Meister 100' certification. It's known as a program where Suntory selects and introduces restaurants that make excellent highballs, so if you love highballs, this is a great spot to enjoy one alongside your meat.

There's also a 'Today's Whisky' recommendation that changes daily. With so many whiskies to choose from, it can be hard to decide, so having the restaurant pick a daily recommendation seemed like a nice, low-pressure way to try something new.

Looks like some famous people have been here too, haha!

What comes in the Seonghwa mixed platter 400g, grilled tableside

Since I wanted to try multiple cuts at once, I ordered the Seonghwa mixed platter 400g. It's made up of Seonghwa sirloin 240g and wine-marinated short rib 160g, so I could enjoy the clean, natural flavor of plain meat alongside a subtly marinated cut.

They offer a tableside grilling service. Good beef really depends on how it's cooked, and when you're grilling it yourself while chatting, it's easy to miss the timing or overcook it. Here, a staff member places the meat on the charcoal, flips it at the right moment, and hands it over cooked just right, which made the meal much more relaxing.

This mattered especially for a well-marbled cut like the Seonghwa sirloin, since overcooking it can let the juices escape. With staff controlling the doneness, I could just focus on chatting and eating instead of worrying about the grill.

The side dishes at Sutbul Seonghwa

The side dishes that came with the meat were more varied than I expected — chamnamul (aster greens), radish salad, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), scallion salad, onion salad, pickled wild garlic, pickled celery, and shiitake wasabi were all there to go with the beef.

Eating only meat can get a bit greasy after a while, but alternating with the tangy, crunchy pickles, baek-kimchi, and radish salad kept my palate feeling clean.

There were also condiments like salt and wasabi to let the meat's flavor shine on its own, so I started by dipping in just a bit of salt, then tried it with wasabi on top.

How did the Seonghwa sirloin taste?

And now, the most important part — the meat! As soon as it arrived, the tight marbling was visible, which already built up my expectations. The moment it hit the charcoal, that savory meat aroma mixed with smoky charcoal scent rose up — beef really does have a distinct flavor when grilled over charcoal. The Seonghwa sirloin browned nicely on the outside while staying moist inside, so the first bite gave a soft texture, and the savory meaty flavor came through more with each chew. It wasn't tough or dry at all — soft enough that a light dip in salt alone was plenty delicious.

Adding doenjang jjigae to the meal

After working through a good amount of the meat, I also ordered doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). After eating charcoal-grilled meat for a while, a Korean BBQ meal really does feel incomplete without doenjang jjigae.

The broth had that distinctive savory doenjang taste layered with rich umami, and it wasn't overly salty — more the kind of flavor that goes well with rice.

Starting with just a light dip in salt let me really taste the meat itself. Add in that subtle charcoal aroma, and it was clearly a different experience from beef simply pan-fried at home. It's a marbled cut, but rather than feeling overly greasy, it had a soft, savory fattiness.

And the side dishes reset my palate perfectly each time.

What the wine-marinated short rib tastes like

Next up was the wine-marinated short rib. Short rib, the cut between the ribs, has an appealingly deep meaty flavor and chewy texture, and here the wine-based marinade gave it a taste that felt distinctly different from the Seonghwa sirloin.

As it grilled over the charcoal, the marinade caramelized slightly, bringing out a sweet, salty aroma, and the meaty flavor came through with each chew.

The marinade wasn't overpowering — it enhanced the meat's flavor subtly rather than masking it, which I appreciated.

Starting with the clean, savory Seonghwa sirloin and then moving to the wine-marinated short rib made the flavor contrast really clear — it was fun getting to compare two styles of beef in a single mixed platter.

Is Sutbul Seonghwa in Songpa worth it?

Overall, this was a satisfying spot from the meat quality to the atmosphere to the grilling service. With a spacious, comfortable dining room and private rooms, it works well for family dinners or work gatherings, and the wide range of whiskies and highballs gives it a different feel from a typical BBQ restaurant. If you're looking for good beef with a drink in Jamsil, it's worth a visit.
