Five minutes from Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station, reservations and hours

On special occasions I tend to look for somewhere that offers more than just good food — a place where the atmosphere and the music come together too. This time I went to Flat Nine, five minutes from Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station!

I like jazz already, and the idea of watching a live performance while eating won me over, so I booked ahead through Naver Reservation.

Hours are Mon–Thu 18:00–23:00, Fri 18:00–24:00, Sat 15:00–24:00, Sun 15:00–23:00, with a break time on Saturdays and Sundays from 17:40 to 18:00.

À la carte or the course — which to pick?

If you've already eaten, go à la carte; if not, I'd recommend the course. Everything at Flat Nine tasted so good that I want to recommend the whole menu! And even if a cocktail isn't on the menu, they'll make it for you if you ask — worth knowing!

The classic course for two, ₩78,000

What we ordered was the classic course for two at ₩78,000! The course ran from an aperitif into amuse-bouche, bread, salad, lasagna, a main steak and dessert. It's a perfect Sinnonhyeon date spot — the kind of place that makes an anniversary feel that much more special.

The bread was slightly crisp on the outside and soft and moist inside! It came with olive oil and balsamic on the side, and dipping the bread in gave a nutty richness with a clean edge of balsamic tang.

Aperitif and amuse-bouche

The first drink out was a reddish aperitif, and it looked gorgeous in the glass before I even tasted it. I don't know much about liquor, but it tasted vodka-based, with mint and fruit mixed in — once it landed on the table, it really felt like the course was officially starting haha.

After the aperitif came the amuse-bouche: crispy fried potatoes. Small enough to pop in one bite, they were nice to snack on while waiting for the performance to start.

Melon and hantae (spear squid) salad

The dish that personally caught my eye was the melon and hantae salad! Thinly sliced squid and melon were layered on top of each other, with an orange sauce spread wide around the plate. The sauce was paprika-based, and between the flavor and the color it looked really vivid and cheerful.

Lasagna

Next came the lasagna, its surface covered in cheese and sauce and looking absolutely delicious. Between the layered sheets of pasta were rich sauce and meat, and melted cheese on top added a nutty savoriness. Cutting into it with a fork revealed all the layers at once, and it was easy to scoop up in a bite! The cheese especially was so good it lifted the whole dish.

The main: Jeju black pork tenderloin steak

The main dish was the Jeju black pork tenderloin steak!! It was so, so good, seriously ㅠㅠ

The surface of the steak was evenly coated in green herb powder, and when I cut into the middle, the inside was moist and pink.

Taking a bite, I could pick up a faint smoky aroma that made it even more delicious! Dipping the meat lightly in the sauce, or pairing it with the roasted potatoes, gave a different feel each time. As the centerpiece of the course, it clearly had more presence than anything that came before it!! And what made it extra special was that the live music kept going right beside us the whole time we were eating the steak.

How was the live jazz performance?

Flat Nine's biggest draw is definitely the live jazz. What we saw was a trio performance — piano, double bass and drums coming together! Being able to watch the performance right in front of us while eating meant there were a lot of moments where I found myself just tuned into the music.

Show times vary by day of the week, so I'd recommend checking before you go.

The finale: chocolate cake

At the very end of the meal, chocolate cake arrived. Even the plating was beautifully done — rich chocolate sponge layered with cream, topped with nutty cream, nuts, and a chocolate garnish stamped with the Flat Nine logo!!

The bittersweet, deep chocolate flavor paired with the soft cream made for a great close to the meal. Eating it together with the scattered nuts added a nutty flavor and crunchy texture. Photographing the dessert under the low lighting, with the small table lights nearby, gave me some pretty atmospheric shots too haha.

What makes a Gangnam jazz bar like this special isn't just that there's music — it's that the live performance keeps flowing naturally between each course as it arrives, so the whole evening ends up feeling like one continuous show!!
