Nampo sushi restaurant with combo sets A and B: Moshi Moshi Sushi

In short

Moshi Moshi Sushi is a Japanese sushi restaurant in the 10th-floor dining hall of Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan, near Nampo. For dinner after shopping, the writer ordered combo sushi set A and combo sushi set B together, plus one extra piece of tuna, to compare the two: set A includes futomaki (thick seaweed roll), while set B comes with three kinds of tempura and a yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) nigiri. Between the side salads and the miso soup, nothing missed, making Moshi Moshi Sushi a satisfying department store meal.

Before heading back to Busan Station, I stopped by Lotte Department Store to do some window shopping and grab dinner. It's been a while since I was in the Nampo area. Even in September it's still pretty hot, so hanging out in the department store where it's cool feels great. Easy parking and a nice cool interior — the best. I went to Modern House and almost brought home a dog, hehe. After browsing around, we had dinner at the sushi spot everyone raves about: Moshi Moshi.

Where is Moshi Moshi Sushi? 10th floor of Lotte Department Store Gwangbok

Moshi Moshi is on the 10th floor of Lotte Department Store Gwangbok. The elevator was slow so we took the escalator instead. Impatient Korean habits, haha.

What are the interior and seating like at Moshi Moshi Sushi?

The inside of Moshi Moshi Sushi is spotless. There were oddly shaped lights hanging in clusters, and surprisingly for a sushi place, there wasn't a hint of fishy smell. The tables and floor were gleaming too. On the way out I noticed they'd been certified as an excellent-hygiene-grade restaurant — makes sense. From older folks to young couples with babies, lots of shoppers seemed to be eating here.

There are bar seats too, with an open kitchen behind them where you can watch the chefs busily making sushi. I kept sneaking glances.

Ordering is done via table order. We ordered combo sushi set A and combo sushi set B, plus one extra piece of tuna ordered separately.

Combo sushi set B: 10 pieces of sushi with salad and tempura

Combo sushi set B comes with 10 pieces of sushi along with tofu salad, cabbage salad, and tempura. I hadn't fully digested lunch yet, but this amount was totally manageable. Three white fish, two salmon, two tuna, one shrimp, one eel, one yukhoe — I liked this lineup.

Tempura trio: shrimp, eggplant and sweet potato

Crispy tempura trio. Shrimp, eggplant, and sweet potato came out. Japanese-style tempura is always a winner. The eggplant tempura was especially the best, which means I'm now grown up enough to actually enjoy eggplant.

Cabbage salad

Started by demolishing the salad first. The sauce was tangy and perfect for whetting the appetite. Salad really is all about the dressing. Sometimes you get places that serve wilted salad, but this one was fresh and lively — good.

Silken tofu salad

The silken tofu salad had a lovely nutty sesame sauce. There was nothing to even chew — it just slid right down and disappeared. I'm a total tofu fiend so I enjoyed it a lot. Felt kind of gentle on the stomach too.

Miso soup

Miso soup, the essential sushi companion. It wasn't too salty and had seaweed in it, so the broth tasted great. Every single side dish here was a hit.

How does the sushi taste, from white fish that may be engawa to yukhoe nigiri?

I'm not sure exactly what fish this was, but it had an unusually crunchy texture that was really tasty. I asked Gemini and it said it was probably halibut fin meat (engawa). Whatever it was, tasty is tasty.

Well-seasoned yukhoe sushi

The eel was large, had no fishy smell, no tiny bones, and was soft and delicious. I'm not usually a fan of red tuna, but the tuna here wasn't greasy at all and tasted great. And the yukhoe sushi was seasoned just right — savory and chewy. If they sold this by itself, I'd buy it separately.

What makes combo sushi set A different? It includes futomaki

Combo sushi set A is the menu someone who doesn't like tempura picked. I thought the sushi lineup would be identical, but it was a bit different — this set included futomaki (thick seaweed roll).

Wow, look at the visuals on this sushi. It came out long and generously sized. Two white fish, two salmon, one tuna, one chewy item, two shrimp, one squid, one futomaki.

If you like both gimbap and sushi, there's no way you wouldn't like this. It has that premium gimbap feel that I really love. When you're sharing, you usually end up eating it in awkward little bites, but the size here was just right so you could eat the whole thing in one bite — I loved that.

The rice portion was just right and the fish on top was generous, haha, very commendable. The halibut and salmon didn't feel mushy at all and tasted fresh. Since it's inside a department store with lots of customers, ingredients probably turn over quickly, which might explain why everything tasted so fresh.

The raw shrimp meat was sweet, and the sauce drizzled on top was tangy-sweet. Personally I prefer raw shrimp over cooked shrimp, but the cooked version was fine too.

Is Moshi Moshi Sushi worth a return trip in Nampo?

The squid was chewy too. I really love that particular texture. I'm a huge fan of squid and things in that family. Every sushi item at Moshi Moshi Sushi was tasty, so I get why the place is always so crowded, hehe. And even when I'm full, sushi doesn't sit heavy in my stomach, so I end up eating it often. My delicate stomach's favorite food, forever and ever.

It was a weekend where my stomach never had a chance to empty out. I'm rationalizing it by telling myself sushi is a healthy food, so it's fine. Successfully crushed a Japanese restaurant near Nampo Station.
