A black pork restaurant just opened near Good Morning Hospital in Dal-dong, so I decided to check it out. Being able to eat black pork right in my own neighborhood — so good!
A Jirye black pork specialist next to Good Morning Hospital in Dal-dong
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue, an Ulsan Dal-dong restaurant known for its Jirye black pork, sits near the Dal-dong restaurant strip, right next to Good Morning Hospital. With plenty of cafés and second-round bars nearby for after dinner, it looked like a great spot for a work dinner or a group gathering.

Group room bookable via Naver, interior with an old-school vibe
This place had just opened! The exterior was clean and the interior looked spacious.
The inside was decorated with a bit of an old-school (nopo) feel. I really like that kind of atmosphere, so it worked for me.
There was also a large room inside for group guests. Being able to use it privately made it look great for a work dinner!
You could keep your shoes on inside too, which was convenient. To use the room, you can easily book ahead through Naver Reservations.
The 2- and 4-person tables were also well set up, making it look good for a family meal or a date spot too.
The menu — Jirye black pork, hanwoo, and lunch specials
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue turned out to be a Jirye black pork specialist. Being able to enjoy black pork right in the neighborhood now was such a nice surprise. They also sell hanwoo (Korean beef).

There were various dessert menus too, and the lunch specials looked pretty good!

Basic side dishes and the self-serve bar
The basic table setting came with a really wide variety of side dishes. Silkworm pupa soup (beondegi-tang) and bean sprout soup came standard too! And every side dish was seasoned just right, pairing well with the meat.
All the side dishes and sauces could be refilled as much as you wanted at the self-serve bar, which was great. The self-serve bar was kept hygienic too.
Also, apparently you get one free bottle of alcohol for writing a receipt review! Since alcohol here is ₩5,000, that seemed like a pretty good deal!

What we ordered
- Black pork combo 500g ₩55,000 (belly + neck + shoulder)
- Egg casserole ₩5,000
- Doenjang sul-bap ₩8,000
Egg casserole ₩5,000 — an enormous stone pot
The egg casserole here comes in a pretty huge stone pot..! The portion was massive haha.
We ordered it to warm up our stomachs before the meat, and it was so delicious. Soft and fluffy, perfect to eat before the main course. Just know the egg casserole takes about 20 minutes to come out, so it's best to order it early!
Jirye black pork combo 500g ₩55,000 — neck and shoulder
When you order the black pork combo, it comes with vegetable skewers too. Eggplant, mushroom, chili pepper, green onion, and cherry tomatoes were skewered on, and grilling them together with the meat was so delicious!

We started by grilling the neck and shoulder cuts.
The shoulder clearly had more visible fat compared to the neck cut. The neck cut also looked notably fresh in color!

The shoulder, grilling up nicely!

And the neck cut!
The shoulder definitely had that slightly firm, chewy texture typical of black pork, and with just the right amount of fat, it was so savory and delicious.
It wasn't tough at all, and it had a clean, mild taste with a strong flavor of the meat itself, so it was really enjoyable. The thickness of the meat was just right too, making it easy to grill, and there was zero off-smell.
The neck cut wasn't dry at all — really clean-tasting. I actually liked the neck cut even more than the shoulder! I really dislike dry neck cuts, but this one had great texture and a rich meat flavor, so it was so good.
Wrapped in lettuce it was delicious too! The lettuce leaves provided were really fresh haha. And wrapping it together with banga (a Korean herb) added a great aroma and flavor.

They told us to add more chili to the anchovy sauce (myeoljeot) and simmer it, but since I'm bad with spicy food, I just simmered it plain and dipped it. It had just the right amount of heat for me. The anchovy sauce paired really well with the meat too!
Thick-cut pork belly — the crispy skin is the highlight
Then we grilled the pork belly. You could tell just by looking that the meat quality was good! It was so tender it cut really easily.

We cut the pork belly a bit thick and grilled it. The skin at the edge of the belly had a chewy texture that was really nice, and the ratio of fat to lean meat was just right, making it a really delicious cut.

The fatty part wasn't chewy at all either, and even when grilled crispy it never went hard — so tasty! It was full of juices, so it stayed really moist.
Just the right amount of fat..! Such a savory, delicious pork belly.
The complimentary cold boiled pork

They gave us the cold boiled pork (naengsuyuk) from the lunch menu on the house! The sauce for it was sweet and delicious, and even though the boiled pork itself was cold, there wasn't a hint of off-smell. If you're visiting for lunch, I'd recommend the cold boiled pork too!
Doenjang sul-bap ₩8,000 — a finish that cuts through the grease

Doenjang (soybean paste stew) is a must after grilled meat! To fill up properly, we ordered the doenjang sul-bap, which comes with rice mixed in. It was loaded with tofu too, which was great.
The doenjang at Daewol Charcoal Barbecue really cuts through the greasiness..! Refreshing with a subtle kick of spice — I loved it. Totally recommend it as a meal! It was especially good eaten as sul-bap.
It was the perfect side dish for the last of our soju too 😋
