Gangneung seaside café for sausage roll bread and jujube tea: Baegya

A large ocean-view bakery café at Sageunjin Beach, Gangneung

Now that I'm in Gangneung, I have to eat corn ice cream, right~ And I wanted to have it at a big café with a proper ocean view, so I searched around~ That's how I found Baegya Coffee, a Gangneung bakery café. Let's go~ There aren't really other cafés this size nearby.

Where is Baegya Coffee, and what about parking and hours?

Baegya Coffee is at 607 Haean-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, open 9 AM–9 PM, with its own parking lot. It's right in front of Sageunjin Beach in Gangneung, so if you sit by the window it's a proper ocean-view café.

Parking is convenient too — there's space right in front of the building, and more parking on the 2nd level up the hill. Plus you can use the public parking lot right by the beach, so no worries about parking!

Walking into the 1st floor, there's a bakery corner in front of the counter — I didn't expect there to be this many kinds of bread~

What is on the menu and in the bakery case?

Baegya Coffee's drink menu is varied — coffee, ice cream, ades, teas, lattes, and more, with the corn cream shot latte, butterscotch latte, and corn ice cream being the standout menu items typical of Gangneung's big cafés. You can choose your coffee beans, and decaf or extra shots are of course available. We ordered corn ice cream and jujube tea. Normally I'd unconditionally order the corn cream shot latte, but with my stomach bug I sadly had to give up the latte! Corn ice cream instead~

True to a Gangneung bakery café, there was a wide variety of bread in the refrigerated case.

Croissants, salt bread, cheese bread — so many. Baegya Coffee says it uses puree from Adamance, a premium French brand made from 100% pure fruit, so I had to pick up some bakery items too~

As expected of a bakery café, the cakes really stood out — hotel-level presentation.

The cupcakes were so pretty, I wanted to eat them too, but ugh, this stomach bug~

There were drinks for kids too, so it seemed like a good place to visit with children.

How the four floors and self-service corners work

Baegya Coffee is a four-floor building — a large Gangneung café — with the rooftop and indoor terrace run as no-kids zones. You move between floors by stairs~

Every floor has a well-equipped self-service corner — microwave, water, cups, plates~ There are even takeout bags, so you can pack up any leftover bakery items to go.

First off, the seats are comfortable, so sitting for a long time doesn't wear you out. These days so many cafés have uncomfortable chairs.. numb butt syndrome~ Here, they've got comfortable chairs.

You can move between floors by stairs, and the plants placed here and there feel fresh and green.

There's also group seating, so it seems like a good spot for local gatherings — or not just that, group travelers can use it comfortably too.

The interior layout is similar on every floor~ There are window seats, and further inside there are split-level ocean-view seats.

Since it was a weekday, the window seats were roomy, so we grabbed a window seat on the 3rd floor.

There's even a charging service~ It's a large Gangneung café with well-thought-out amenities.

While walking around after ordering, I went up to the rooftop too — and sure enough, the sea in full view~ An ocean-view café looking out at Sageunjin Beach~

I came here a few years back when Sageunjin Beach was really trendy, but this trip we just kept our distance.. We didn't walk along the beach, but just looking at it from here was nice too.

Tasting the oksigi corn ice cream, Grandma Boksun's jujube tea and sausage roll bread

For a simple bakery item, we ordered the sausage roll bread!

The corn ice cream I'd wanted to try looked pretty too. It's topped with corn kernels and cornflakes over the ice cream. The pale yellow ice cream is soft and moderately sweet. I liked that the sweetness wasn't overdone. And biting into the corn kernels gave it a nice texture~

The jujube tea is Grandma Boksun's homemade jujube tea. Who could Grandma Boksun be? Anyway, homemade jujube tea made by a grandmother.. that made it feel even more heartfelt and warm, and it really settled my stomach.

Pine nuts and jujubes were placed on top one by one, so thoughtfully made. My stomach had been upset, but after drinking a warm cup of jujube tea that felt full of a grandmother's care, I felt my energy come back.

Sausage roll bread is something I always have a soft spot for, so I've eaten this kind of bread at bakery cafés all over. Here the size is just right, with cheese and sauce melting on top~ It had more of a savory depth, was just salty enough, and the pastry was soft.

A proper healing moment at a Gangneung ocean-view café~ The corn ice cream disappeared in no time, but the jujube tea~ was so sweet and delicious~ Fall's here now.. and the Gangneung wind was blowing so hard.. A place I want to go back to for a warm cup of tea — I'll have to return for jujube tea again in winter~
