Tonight I decided to take my parents out for a bossam (boiled pork wrap) set meal. I'd heard a good bossam place had opened recently in the Gyodong area of Daegu, so I booked ahead and we headed over. The place we went was Uldong Bossam, a well-known spot in Gyodong.
Where is Uldong Bossam, and where do you park near Daegu City Hall?
Uldong Bossam is located near the Dong-in building of Daegu City Hall. It's within a 15-minute walk of Exit 3 of Chilseong Market Station on Daegu Subway Line 1. There's no on-site parking lot, but nearby options like the City Hall Plaza pay lot, the Dongin-dong lot, or the Seongnae public lot make driving there manageable. We came in my dad's car today and parked at the City Hall Plaza pay lot.
Being a newly opened restaurant, Uldong Bossam has a clean exterior that catches the eye right away. Inside, the space is even more spacious than it looks from outside, with plenty of tables. We visited on a late Sunday evening, and there were a few couples inside enjoying bossam with drinks on a date. With its location close to Gyodong, tidy interior, and good value menu, it seems like a great date spot for younger crowds too.
Ordering three bossam sets with the extra-meat option
We took a table by the window and ordered via the tablet. We chose three bossam sets and a potato pancake. For my dad's set, we added the extra-meat option.
What the dining room at Uldong Bossam feels like
While waiting for our order, I looked around the restaurant. A neatly arranged liquor display right at the entrance caught my eye, and Korean-style decorative pieces throughout the space gave it a quiet, refined atmosphere. There's also a restroom inside the restaurant, which made things more convenient.
What comes with the bossam set, and the sesame soy sauce
Soon our bossam set arrived. At its center sat pork that looked soft at a glance, surrounded by neatly arranged side dishes, a bubbling doenjang (soybean paste) stew, and barley rice filling the whole table.
Following the owner's instructions, we ground sesame seeds fresh and poured in white soy sauce to make a special dipping sauce.
Dipping the bossam pork into the finished sesame soy sauce, the nutty sesame flavor blended with the clean soy sauce taste, bringing out the pork's tenderness perfectly. There was no gamey or off smell at all, and the ratio of lean meat to fat was well balanced, giving a clean, savory flavor with every bite.
We also tried pairing the pork with ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste) and minari (water celery), and tried it again with a touch of salted shrimp for a cleaner taste. Every side dish complemented the bossam beautifully. My parents, who joined me, were also pleased, saying the meat was tender and the flavors clean.
The doenjang stew that came alongside had chunky chadolbagi (thinly sliced beef brisket) in it. Its spicy, savory broth was lively and helped cleanse the palate between bites of bossam.
Was the 9,000 won potato pancake worth it?
While we were still eating the bossam, the side dish potato pancake arrived. Given the ₩9,000 price, I didn't expect much, but it came out thick and generously sized. The owner finished it off with a sprinkle of cheese powder on top.
We cut the potato pancake into bite-sized pieces and dipped it in turn into the accompanying sauce and ketchup. The exterior was fried crisp, with an impressively crunchy texture, while the inside was packed with nutty flavor.
Uldong Bossam prices and final verdict
We cleaned our plates, from the main bossam down to the side dishes. After the meal, we finished off with a refreshing plum tea and left satisfied.
Uldong Bossam's bossam set is ₩10,900 per person, and even with the extra-meat option it's only ₩12,900, so it's easy on the wallet. Given the overall price and food quality, the value is excellent — almost a shame there isn't one near my house. It seems like a great lunch spot for office workers near Daegu City Hall or Jung-gu District Office, and since it stays open late, it's also a good choice for a solo late dinner after work.
