Late-afternoon meal at a Busan Station milmyeon restaurant: Yeongdong

Yeongdong Milmyeon & Dwaeji Gukbap Busan Station Branch is a milmyeon (cold wheat noodle) and mandu (dumpling) restaurant at the start of the alley across from Busan Station plaza in Dong-gu, Busan. Stopping in during the quiet mid-afternoon before a train, the writer ordered mul milmyeon, bibim milmyeon and king mandu at once and worked through the meal starting with the warm kettle broth. For value, walking distance from Busan Station and taste, Yeongdong Milmyeon Busan Station Branch was the right call.

Gwangalli brunch café with a 6-minute parking walk: Famous Benny

Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch is a two-floor brunch café in Minnak-dong, Suyeong, Busan, right next to the Minnak-dong administrative welfare center. On a weekday morning there was no wait, and the order came to The Famous Benny (salmon) at 18,000 won, Egg in Hell (shakshuka) at 15,000 won, an Americano at 5,500 won and a latte at 6,000 won. The closest lot, Minnak Sealand Market public parking, is cramped, so parking at Minnak public parking lot and walking six minutes to Famous Benny was the easier choice.

Gwangalli window-seat lunch with pepperoni potato pizza: Extra Mile

Extra Mile is a Western restaurant on Suyeongro554beon-gagil in Gwangalli, Busan. Two of us took a window seat and shared bisque cream pasta and a half-and-half Hot Pepperoni & Potato pizza, coloring with the pencils left on the table while the food cooked. For a Gwangalli lunch where you want pizza and pasta in one sitting, Extra Mile's pairing works well.

Songjeong Korean restaurant, 38,000 won set for two: Songjeongok

Songjeongok is a Korean set-menu restaurant specializing in abalone pot rice, on the road behind Songjeong Beach in Haeundae, Busan. The basic abalone pot rice set for two costs 38,000 won and arrives with pot rice stirred with abalone innards sauce and scrambled egg, gabrisal (pork neck) bossam, and side dishes including seasoned soy crab and spicy squid salad. The best bite at Songjeongok was spicy radish salad with a slice of garlic on top of the gabrisal, and free corkage makes it an easy pick for a family meal or a date.

Kid-friendly milmyeon restaurant in Seomyeon, Busan: Seomyeon Milmyeon

Seomyeon Milmyeon is a milmyeon (cold wheat noodle) restaurant in Busanjin, Busan, a 5-minute walk from Exit 8 of Seomyeon Station. On a Sunday outing with the kids to a kids' café and the citizens' park, the writer arrived after 1:30 pm and ordered mul-milmyeon (cold broth noodles), bibim-milmyeon (spicy mixed noodles) and dumplings. The dumplings, with skin so thin the filling shows through, went especially well with the cold mul-milmyeon, though the peppery hot broth served at the table was too spicy for a child.

Jeonpo sashimi restaurant for a Thursday friends' night: Rigo Susan

Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant and bar in Jeonpo-dong, Busan, a 5-minute walk from Jeonpo Station Exit 8. On a Thursday evening with friends, the writer ordered Rigo Susan's signature live shrimp sashimi set, which came with tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), roll sushi, soy-marinated crab, cold udon and mulhoe (chilled raw fish soup), alongside still-twitching live shrimp and shrimp heads fried on the spot. Rigo Susan has no dedicated parking, but the subway access makes it an easy pick for a night of drinks.

Low & Sweet Bakery is a roastery bakery café on Haeri-dan-gil in Haeundae, Busan. The basic canelé, decaf latte, egg tart and lemon madeleine were all tasted at Low & Sweet Bakery, and the canelé came first — eaten one bite at a time at every red light on the drive home. Songjeong café with a ₩500 tea-of-the-day discount: Suwolgyeonghwa

Suwolgyeonghwa is a traditional tea café on the 3rd and 4th floors of a building facing Songjeong Beach in Haeundae, Busan. After a Chinese lunch nearby, we stopped in for dessert and took a 4th-floor picture-window seat to watch the beach train pass while trying the Dalbodeure Box at 13,000 won, a warm Mint Shock at 8,500 won and gabae-ore at 7,000 won, with 500 won off for choosing the tea of the day. Between the ocean view, the tea, the desserts and the guestbook stamp at the entrance, Suwolgyeonghwa is a 100% repeat visit.

Three-dish weekday lunch at a Dalmaji-gil Chinese restaurant: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Haeundae Branch is a European-style Chinese restaurant on the Dalmaji-gil hill in Haeundae, Busan. On a weekday half-day off, before meeting a friend, lunch here was three dishes — jalapeño cream shrimp (22,000 won), eoyanggaji (stir-fried eggplant, 22,000 won) and whole garlic yuringi (26,000 won) — served with pickled radish, jjasai (pickled mustard stem) and jasmine tea. The one thing to remember at Bueokgan is the floor: the Chinese restaurant is on the 1st, the group's European restaurant on the 2nd.

Moshi Moshi Sushi, Lotte Department Store Dongnae Branch is a Japanese sushi restaurant in the 8th-floor dining hall of Lotte Department Store in Dongnae-gu, Busan. Three diners ordered Set 3 (56,900 won) and the soba sushi set (18,500 won), sharing 16 pieces of sushi, salmon salad, tofu salad, udon and soba. Parking is easy inside the department store building and validated on the way out, making Moshi Moshi Sushi a solid pick for a clean, tidy sushi meal near Myeongnyun Station.

Haeundae baby-friendly lunch, unseasoned sweet potato fries: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Haeundae Branch is a Western restaurant on the second floor of a building on Dalmaji-gil 117beon-na-gil in Haeundae, Busan. On a weekday lunch visit with a baby, the order was abalone cream risotto (20,000 won), seafood tomato clay-pot pasta (19,000 won), sweet potato fries (8,000 won) and an ade, and the staff brought a high chair and baby tableware. Asking for the sweet potato fries with the spicy seasoning left off and only cheese on top made them easy to share with the baby.

Busan tonkatsu with a 15-minute weekday evening wait: Hets Jeonpo

Hets Jeonpo Branch is a tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet) restaurant on the second floor near Exit 7 of Jeonpo Station in Busanjin, Busan. Arriving at 6:30pm on a weekday meant a 15-minute wait, then one YBD assorted katsu at 17.0 and one limited-run YBD sang loin katsu at 16.0, eaten with pepper, corn-flavored salad dressing, truffle oil and wasabi. The pork at Hets Jeonpo was tender rather than chewy — the best tonkatsu tasted so far.
