Euljiro 3-ga bar with gambas and Suntory highballs: Another Level

Another Level is a food-focused bar in Euljiro 3-ga, Seoul, one minute on foot from Exit 10 of Euljiro 3-ga Station, with indoor seating and a rooftop city view on the 4th floor. Gambas cost 20,000 won, focaccia dough pepperoni pan pizza 19,000 won and arugula cream pasta 18,000 won, paired with a 10,000 won Suntory highball, and all three dishes came in generous portions. Another Level is a solid pick for after-work meetups or dates when you want dinner and drinks in one stop.

Late-night pizza until 2am near Yeomchang Station, Seoul: Eopija

Eopija is a late-night pizza bar in Yangcheon, Seoul, right by Yeomchang Station and the Wolchon public parking lot in Mok 2-dong, open until 2am. Arriving after 10pm, we ordered Set A (29,900 won) — half an arugula and cheese pizza with cheese tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), salad and nachos on one tray — plus a non-alcoholic mojito, and the portion was plenty for two. If you want somewhere to keep talking into the small hours, Eopija is the answer.

Solo drinking bar in Gangnam, Seoul with face-to-face bar seats: Yahwa

Yahwa Honsul Bar Nonhyeon is a solo drinking bar in the basement at 30 Gangnam-daero 122-gil, near Nonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul, where the bar seats face each other. The writer drank Noah's Mill at 19,000 won, Glen Grant 15 at 20,000 won and a gin and tonic at 11,000 won with pineapple sherbet, and found the dart machine, card games, alligator-teeth game and the outlets under the bar seats made it easy to talk to strangers. Apart from no soap in the bathroom, Yahwa Honsul Bar Nonhyeon was a satisfying place to drink alone.

Hongdae dumpling bar with gyoza that survives the subway: MANDOO BAR

MANDOO BAR is a dumpling bar (mandu restaurant) on Hongdae's Red Road in Seoul, on the second floor right next to the KT&G Sangsangmadang building. The takeout-only taco gyoza and the signature MANDOO BAR gyoza were picked up and carried home on a packed rush-hour Line 1 train, and the toppings, the look and the crisp bottoms of the gyoza all held up. MANDOO BAR is worth packing up for a picnic or a baseball game too.

Geumcheon Korean BBQ restaurant, 500g hanwoo set: Ddeum Sukseong No.9

Ddeum Sukseong Hanwoo No.9 is a 1++ No.9 grade aged hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant near Geumcheon-gu Office Station in Geumcheon, Seoul. The Hanwoo Special Set 500g costs 145,000 won and comes semi-omakase style, with a staff member grilling every cut over the brazier from start to finish; dinner visits also include three complimentary dishes, plain sushi rice, ankimo and seasoned cockles. Between the juicy beef and the generous extras, Ddeum Sukseong Hanwoo No.9 is worth a return trip.

Shrimp noodle restaurant near Hongdae with patio seats: Ttasijia

Ttasijia Yeonnam is a Singaporean shrimp noodle restaurant in a Yeonnam-dong alley near Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station in Mapo, Seoul, and the first official Korean location of Singapore's shrimp house Da Shi Jia (대식가). Two of us shared the signature shrimp noodles with thin noodles, the shrimp broth fried noodles and a small black vinegar guobaorou, then finished with 100% fresh-pressed apple juice. With its patio tables outside, Ttasijia Yeonnam works well as a Yeonnam-dong evening date stop.

Wangsimni bar with baseball on screen: chicken feet at Rainbow Pocha

Rainbow Pocha is a second-floor bar and Korean pub in Wangsimni, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, a short walk from Wangsimni Station Exit 10. The visit covered the boneless chicken feet and corn cheese set for 29,900 won with a self-made rice ball, plus Cookierunt dessert for 9,900 won, all while baseball played on the in-store screen. Between round tables and plenty of group seating, Rainbow Pocha handles a Wangsimni work dinner and a two-person date night equally well.

Chinese tonkotsu noodles and Peking duck at Panda Dim Sum in Hongdae

Panda Dim Sum is a Chinese restaurant on the second floor at 22 Donggyo-ro 38an-gil in Yeonnam-dong, Hongdae, Seoul. The order was half a Peking duck for 39,000 won, Chinese tonkotsu noodles for 13,500 won and xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) for 8,000 won, with the duck wrapped in thin wheat pancakes with scallion and cucumber and the thick-noodle tonkotsu bowl finished to the last drop. Half Peking duck with the Chinese tonkotsu was the most satisfying pairing at Panda Dim Sum.

Seoul rooftop bar in Jamsil with Lotte Tower views: 88 Nogari Bangi

88 Nogari Bangi Branch (88노가리 방이직영점) is a rooftop beer bar in the Bangi-dong food street of Jamsil, Songpa-gu, Seoul, taking up the 2nd floor, 3rd floor and a rooftop terrace of its building. On a cool early-September evening revisit, the rooftop terrace with its Lotte Tower night view was the setting for meoktae (grilled dried pollack, 17,000 won), fried squid legs (10,000 won) and creamy Terra draft beer (4,900 won). With a self-serve snack bar on the 2nd floor that even stocks frozen Homerun Ball snacks, 88 Nogari Bangi Branch is a great second stop while the outdoor-seating weather lasts.

Mangwon Italian wine bar with a 38,000-won season lunch: Noju

Noju is a second-floor Italian wine bar and fine dining restaurant in Mangwon, Mapo, Seoul, 145 meters from Mangwon Station Exit 2. A visitor from Daegu arrived on a Monday at 2pm and ordered two season lunch courses at 38,000 won each, working through focaccia, bottarga pasta, truffle gnocchi, pork tenderloin steak and walnut ice cream. With a wine list long enough to get its own menu, Noju is an easy choice for a first fine dining meal or a date course in Seoul.

Bangi-dong, Seoul octopus restaurant for group dinners: Muneo Cheonha

Muneo Cheonha is a live octopus restaurant in the food alley of Bangi-dong, Songpa District, Seoul, serving Yeosu live octopus for over 10 years. This visit covered the medium hwaloe (parboiled live octopus) and grilled mackerel, with complimentary starters of octopus steamed egg and hot-plate corn cheese that were already well made. Yangjae Korean tasting menu with chicken leg main, ₩109,000: MUSEO

MUSEO is a Korean fine-dining restaurant on the basement level of a building on Gangnamdae-ro 47-gil in Yangjae, Seocho, Seoul. The ₩109,000 Chef's Tasting Menu ran from a Sinan scallion tart to mulhoe (cold raw seafood soup), Wando kelp brioche, sea urchin buckwheat noodles and a chicken leg main, closing with a makgeolli dessert, and the kitchen printed a birthday message on the menu card. Given the length of the course and how refined the sauces are, MUSEO feels underpriced and is worth saving for an anniversary dinner.
