Suyuk-baekban table setting at Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap

Hello, this is Weirdo Husband. Still on my quest through Daegu's gukbap (Korean soup with rice) restaurants. Busan gukbap is famous, but Daegu gukbap is famous too! Actually, come to think of it, every region seems to have its own famous gukbap, doesn't it? Anyway, out of all the pork gukbap I've tried, this place had the most satisfying suyuk-baekban (boiled pork platter with rice).

Where is Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap, and what are its hours?

One minute's walk from Gamsam Station Exit 3. The sign is huge and eye-catching. The gukbap is hot. The broth is refreshing. Actually, it's hot. Am I having some kind of Ripley syndrome?

Not 24 hours, but open late into the night — a gukbap spot on Gwangjang Coa street. It's close to Duryu Station too, so plenty of people stop by at dawn to cure a hangover. Gotta have a bowl of gukbap before heading home, right? For a comfortable stomach the next day. Gukbap over ramyeon, always.

Staff washing the pot the broth was cooked in. A gukbap restaurant that inspires real trust. Not a single percent of food additives goes in. It's simmered with care for over 15 hours using 100% domestic Korean pork bone. It's the real deal, like a tonic.

Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap even has its own private restroom, and you can watch the news in there. There's a news segment introducing the restaurant's journey.

What's on the menu at Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap?

I'd recommend this as a lunch spot on Gwangjang Coa street. Kettle pork gukbap, chewy offal gukbap, suyuk-baekban, hearty sundae gukbap, spicy gukbap, special assorted gukbap. You can switch to lean meat, spicy, or a larger portion. Bone broth and rice are free.

It also works well as a drinking spot on Gwangjang Coa street. The menu is packed with dishes perfect for pairing with drinks: suyuk, assorted suyuk, sul-guk, cold jeyuk, bite-size sundae, osori-muchim.

Traces left behind by the huge crowd at lunchtime... dinner is probably just as busy.

The customer is king. I am king. I'm a king. Bㅓrger King...

Every gukbap and suyuk is sliced by hand, not by machine. Every side dish served to guests is made with care, from scratch. If any banchan, rice, or bone broth runs low while you're eating, it's unlimited refills. Always so grateful. Thank you for letting me eat such delicious gukbap too. Thank you so much. I'm getting drunk on gratitude...

Broth simmering with care in the broth room. So this is what it takes — over 15 hours of simmering — to make a truly great gukbap restaurant.

A bowl of rich, deeply simmered bone broth

Is this black bean water? The broth was seriously rich and thick. Apparently it can even cure a hangover on the spot.

Banchan and the fresh-dressed kimchi (geotjeori)

Side dishes made fresh in-house every day. Each one is so good I can't just pass on any of them.

Housemade side dishes and geotjeori

This place is a genuine geotjeori (fresh seasoned cabbage) spot, so I can't skip it. Definitely eat it with plain white rice.

Self-service bar for side dish refills

If any side dish runs low, call a staff member or use the self-service bar. Oh, and the staff were so kind — a kind of warmth that never felt pushy. The customer is king. The staff are the kindness kings.

Suyuk-baekban for two, plated separately for each person

What we ordered — suyuk-baekban x2. It's so nice when each portion comes on its own plate. Usually it all comes on one shared plate, which leads to plenty of arguing over whose is whose... thankfully, not here.

Suyuk-baekban served with a mountain of rice and bone broth

A suyuk-baekban that looks like a flower. Looks fancy enough for a royal table.

A mountain of rice — you're unlikely to run out, but refills are available if you do. Order the baekban and you get bone broth as a bonus. Even the bone broth has that much meat in it — basically an invitation to overeat.

It kind of reminds me of Jeju-style dombegogi (freshly sliced pork). The fat-to-lean ratio is great, there's no gamey smell, and dipping it in the housemade soy sauce brings out a rich, savory flavor that fills your mouth.

The weirdo couple's hands and mouths couldn't stop. You get gukbap too, so it's two birds with one stone. Am I just greedy about food?

Suyuk fanned out on a plate with salted shrimp

Fanned out beautifully. The salted shrimp (saeujeot) in the center is really delicious. The seasoning is spot on.

Three pieces of suyuk picked up at once

There's so much you can eat three pieces at once. This suyuk-baekban is anything but a small portion. Great value too — Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap really delivers.

Weirdo Wife stealing my rice. No need to call staff for a refill. Wonder why only I'm the one gaining weight from this.

The Weirdo's verdict on Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap

Nice that they accept Onnuri gift certificates too. I heard there's an extra Chuseok top-up benefit — since I brought it up, I should go do that right now.

A gukbap restaurant that stays open long, until 1am. Sitting on Gwangjang Coa street between Duryu Station and Gamsam Station, people come for lunch and dinner, come for drinks in the evening, and come for a hangover cure at dawn. What is this — full of life all day long. If you're looking for a Daegu pork gukbap recommendation, Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap is the one.
