Lately I find myself craving a clean Korean-style meal more than meat. This time I went to Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch on Deulan-ro.
As the name suggests, mackerel is the star here, but once I got there, the banchan (side dishes) and soup came together as a full spread, and the vibe was nice enough for a family meal or bringing your parents along.
The wood-fired grilled mackerel was more moist than I expected, and I could easily grab more banchan from the self-serve bar, so I left feeling properly full, haha.

Where do you park at Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch?
Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch is at 57 Deulan-ro, 2nd floor, Suseong-gu, Daegu, South Korea, and there's a parking staff member on hand to guide you in. You can also park on the ground level, though that seemed to be mostly for larger vehicles.

There are actually three mechanical parking lots. When you're leaving, just tell them where you parked and they'll take care of the rest.
Inside Geumdeungeo: atmosphere and seating

Walking in, the atmosphere was better than I expected — less like a typical Korean set-meal restaurant and more polished and cozy.

The seating is divided into different sections, which seemed well suited for a family meal with parents or a small gathering.
There's also a table that fits a larger group, so it looked good for family get-togethers or group meals too.
Menu and how ordering works

Wood-fired grilled mackerel and spicy pork stir-fry looked like the main menu items. We ordered wood-fired grilled mackerel for two plus one spicy pork stir-fry. You order through the table-order tablet at each table.
Self-serve banchan bar: freshly made japchae, refilled twice

You can grab as much banchan as you want from the self-serve bar.

The japchae was my favorite thing there, haha. When I went back for more, a staff member told me a fresh batch was about to come out, so I waited a bit. They brought over the warm, freshly made japchae, and yes — freshly made really does taste better. I ended up going back for it a second time.

A serving robot kept rolling around the whole time. It even brought our bowls of rice, haha — where's my rice going... wait for it 😂
The full table spread and soup timed with an hourglass

As the banchan got set out one by one, the table filled up fast. Overall it wasn't heavy or overly seasoned, so it went well with rice. And that japchae from the self-serve bar — I kept reaching for it, haha.
The soup simmers right at the table, and eating it piping hot made it even better. This kind of thing is best with a spoonful of rice alongside it.

They also give you an hourglass — flip it once the soup starts boiling, and once the sand runs out, turn off the heat, done! It made things really easy to follow, haha.

A quick sip before the main dish arrived.
Wood-fired grilled mackerel, the dish Geumdeungeo is named for

Finally, the main dish arrived. With a name like Geumdeungeo (금등어, literally "golden mackerel"), I was most excited for this. The outside was grilled to a perfect golden brown, and when I nudged it with my chopsticks, the flesh inside just flaked apart, moist.
Grilled fish can turn dry or fishy if it's not done right, but here the outside was nicely crisp while the inside stayed soft — good enough to eat with just plain rice, haha. Nuruk salt (rice-yeast salt) on the side.

When I flaked the flesh apart, the inside was cooked moist like this. No dryness at all — it came apart smoothly along the grain and was easy to eat.
It was good on its own, but dipping it lightly in the nuruk salt on the side brought out the clean flavor even more. It wasn't a sharp, overly salty hit — it paired really well with the mackerel. A piece on top of rice — ah, this is why mackerel is the main dish here, haha.
Spicy pork stir-fry (jeyuk bokkeum)

It felt like a waste to eat only mackerel, so we ordered the spicy pork stir-fry too. The sauce was glossy and gave off proper rice-thief vibes. It wasn't overly sweet or spicy — just the right amount to eat with rice — so I kept going back for more.
There was even a hit of perilla leaf that made it even tastier, haha. A bite of mackerel, then a bite of spicy pork, then rice again — having both fish and meat made the whole spread that much more filling.

Gangjeong, coffee and banchan to take home
After the meal, gangjeong (a Korean rice puff snack) was set out for dessert. I was already full, but I still ended up reaching for a piece, haha.

There's also a fridge near the entrance selling banchan and packaged products separately. If you liked something you tried, you can buy it to take home.

To finish, I even pulled a cup of coffee from the machine! No need for a separate café stop — meal and dessert all in one place.
Paying and heading out, I noticed the place had a hygiene-certified restaurant seal and a few other certification plaques on display.
Is Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch worth a visit?
I went to Geumdeungeo Deulanguil Main Branch craving proper grilled fish after a while. The wood-fired mackerel had a golden-brown outside and moist flesh inside, and ordering the spicy pork alongside it meant we got both fish and meat, making the whole spread more filling.
Above all, the banchan overall wasn't overly heavy, and I liked being able to grab more of whatever I liked from the self-serve bar. That warm, freshly made japchae especially still sticks in my memory, haha.
If you're looking for a Deulanguil restaurant to take your parents for Korean food or for a casual family meal, this is worth a visit.
