Over the weekend, I was looking for a Korean restaurant where I could take my parents for a meal that was not too stimulating and would sit comfortably, so I visited Yeongwolae Gondre Ansan Branch (영월애곤드레 안산점), an Ansan restaurant specializing in neatly arranged Korean set meals. Located on the second floor of a building in the heart of the commercial district near Gojan-dong Culture Square, it was easy to reach by public transport, and basement parking was available too—making it a good choice for a family meal or lunch gathering.

On one side of the entrance at Yeongwolae Gondre, where I visited, was a local-government-certified Ansan restaurant designation plaque and

a Ministry of Food and Drug Safety restaurant hygiene grade mark for “excellent” (three stars), which immediately gave me confidence in the restaurant’s cleanliness.

There is normally a wait during peak mealtimes, so I made an opening run at 10:40 a.m. and was able to enter right away without waiting. Above all, the supported basement parking went smoothly too, making Yeongwolae Gondre a solid gathering spot.

A bright, spacious dining room for gatherings
The spacious dining room felt bright and open, with soft sunlight coming in through the large windows.

The tables were generously spaced, so we could eat without being distracted by conversations nearby. Stylish lighting and wooden partitions kept everything neatly organized, making it comfortable for a company dinner or a small family gathering.

A full set of spicy pork and grilled mackerel
We ordered the signature Yeongwol spicy stir-fried pork set meal (₩18,000) and grilled mackerel set meal (₩18,000).

The menu also had a good selection of à la carte dishes, including country-style gangdoenjang (thick fermented soybean paste stew) and Namdo-style seasoned cockles, along with traditional drinks such as Yeongwol dongdongju (unfiltered rice wine).

A self-bar for side dishes and wrap vegetables
While waiting for the food, I looked around the self-bar and found the side dishes neatly replenished. We could freely help ourselves to nutty perilla-seed dressed lotus root, spicy-tangy acorn jelly vegetable salad, and fresh ssam (leaf wraps) vegetables.

Children’s dishes and spoons were hygienically stored and sterilized in the UV sterilizer above the self-bar, which showed consideration for guests dining with kids.

Even the standard tableware was substantial bangjja yugi (hand-forged Korean brassware), making the meal feel thoughtfully served! Before long, dishes in brass bowls, earthenware pots, and dedicated iron plates were laid out one after another, completing the abundant spread characteristic of a neat Korean set meal.

Freshly cooked gondre rice, steaming hot, and a hearty earthenware-pot stew added substance to the meal. The main dishes arrived on heated cast-iron pans and iron plates, staying warm throughout. The basic side dishes were not overly salty or sweet either, which suited my taste perfectly.

Crisp and moist grilled mackerel
The grilled mackerel, served on an iron plate, had thick, substantial flesh to match its size. Its skin was grilled crisp for a crunchy texture, while the flesh inside held onto moist richness without becoming dry. There was hardly any fishy smell typical of oily fish, and its lightly seasoned saltiness paired beautifully with the fragrant gondre rice. Crisp outside and tender inside—the textbook version of that combination—and a seriously excellent rice companion.

Yeongwol spicy pork with lively charcoal aroma
The Yeongwol spicy stir-fried pork arrived sizzling in a cast-iron pan, and its deep charcoal-grilled aroma alone made my appetite kick in. The pork, aged in house-made gochujang (Korean red chili paste) seasoning, was tender with a pleasant springiness rather than tough. The deeply savory seasoning had soaked into the lean meat without tasting aggressive or heavy. It was great over gondre rice, or wrapped in lettuce with garlic—the smoky flavor and crisp vegetables worked so well together.

Finishing with sikhye and maesil tea
After the meal, I moved to the traditional jar dessert corner beside the self-bar. Earthenware jars kept in an ice bath held lightly frozen sikhye (sweet rice punch) and cool maesil tea (plum tea).

The ladled sikhye was clean-tasting, with the subtle natural sweetness of malt rather than an artificial sugary sweetness. A cup of sweet-tart, chilled maesil tea rounded it out, freshening up the oily finish and leaving my stomach feeling comfortable.

Because the food came fully cooked in dedicated containers, we could finish the meal comfortably without worrying about food odors clinging to our clothes. At ₩18,000 per person, gondre rice, charcoal-grilled dishes, a well-stocked self-bar, and traditional desserts made it feel like excellent value.

Make an opening run to avoid the wait
Since waits are usually long here, I recommend making an opening run at 10:40 a.m. if you want to enjoy your meal at an unhurried pace,

and it was a place that would be more than satisfying for anyone wanting a neat, easy-on-the-stomach meal, or looking for an Ansan Korean restaurant to take their parents to.
