Songdo bakery birthday cake for two: Karish mini choco, Tomoru Bakery

In short

Tomoru Bakery is a master pastry chef's bakery in Songdo, Incheon, sitting between Central Park and Incheon National University Station. For a birthday I bought the Karish mini chocolate cake for 28,000 won and a milk bread loaf for 4,800 won: the Karish layered dense chocolate cream with strawberries and grapes for a rich but not overly sweet finish, while the milk bread came pre-sliced in a zip bag for easy storage. For a birthday cake that two people can finish, the mini size at Tomoru Bakery is the one to get.

Songdo, Incheon, is famous for its bakery pilgrimage spots. Among them, I visited Tomoru Bakery's Songdo location near Central Park and Incheon National University Station to pick up a birthday cake and some bread.

It's a bakery where a certified master pastry chef kneads and bakes with healthy ingredients — here's my review of the bread types and prices.

Where Tomoru Bakery is in Songdo, and first impressions

Since a certified Korean master pastry chef handles everything from kneading to baking here, Tomoru has spacious baking facilities and a distinctive exterior that's easy to spot from a distance, even on a first visit.

Tomoru Bakery is often mentioned as a must-visit stop on the Incheon bakery pilgrimage, loved for its quality ingredients and wide variety of breads. They use rice flour, which is gluten-free, easier to digest, and makes the bread chewier.

Bread kept coming out from the back, and the store was packed with a wide variety of baked goods on display.

There were plenty of hearty sandwiches and desserts perfect for gifting.

There was also a generous selection of easy-to-digest rice flour bread and freshly baked items.

Cakes at Tomoru Bakery: mini size vs No.1 size

Showcase of mini and No.1 size cakes

Since my main reason for visiting Tomoru today was the birthday cake, I checked those out first. Compare the mini size, great for 1-2 people, with the No.1 size, good for a family.

They also have fruit cakes, so if you're looking for a fruit cake in Songdo, Incheon, Tomoru is worth a visit.

Gift boxes of cookie sets and meringue cookies

Tomoru Bakery had well-made packaging that's great for gifting. Cookie sets come in a clean box, and there were also meringue cookies that make a light gift.

Boxes of 1, 2, or 3 items can all be wrapped.

Drinks, and what I took home today

Coffee and drink price list at Tomoru Bakery

For reference, here are the coffee and drink prices to enjoy with your bread :)

  • Milk bread ₩4,800
  • Karish mini (chocolate cake) ₩28,000

For a birthday, I picked up the chocolate cake and Tomoru's milk bread. Organic flour, natural fermentation starter, AOP-certified butter, antibiotic-free eggs, no artificial additives — and I think the price is quite reasonable for that.

Milk bread, 4,800 won

The bread came pre-cut and packed in a zip bag, making it easy to store.

Since it's already sliced, it's a great size for sandwiches or toast. Tasting it, even the crust wasn't dry, so it was good all the way through. The bread's density was low, making it light to eat and letting the flavor of ingredients or jam shine through. Apparently the dough is fermented at low temperature for at least 18 hours to bake it at its freshest.

Karish mini, 28,000 won: a birthday cake for two

Tomoru's cake came in a sturdy pink box.

The rich chocolate cream Karish was decorated with thin shaved chocolate on the outside, giving it both a nice texture and a good look. Strawberries and grapes on top added a refreshing fruity note — I'd describe the overall taste as heavy chocolate. Not a cheap-tasting chocolate flavor, but a rich, luxurious sweetness.

A slice of chocolate cake showing the cream-to-sponge ratio

As you can see in the cross-section, the ratio of cake to cream was well balanced, so you didn't have to eat dry cake alone. Plenty of cream and a moist sponge.

Worried it might be too sweet? Personally, it is sweet since it's a chocolate cake — but it's not the extreme sweetness you'd get at a place like Twosome Place. It's an easy-going sweetness you can breeze through even a big slice on your own, so if you're looking for a chocolate cake, Tomoru is a solid choice :)
