5pm window seat at a Marine City Chinese restaurant in Busan: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a 100-pyeong Chinese restaurant in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan, with wide-open ocean views. Arriving at 5pm, right as break time ended, meant an ocean-view window seat and a table of gochu ganjajang at 10,000 won, beef brisket jjamppong at 12,000 won and a small black vinegar tangsuyuk at 28,000 won, plus free dumplings from the review event. The cooked dishes at Bueokgan Chinese run pricey, but the noodle and rice mains are cheap enough to keep bringing you back.

After a first stop there for a business meeting, the writer came back on the weekend with his wife and second child for chili jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), beef brisket jjamppong and sweet and sour pork in one spread. Bueokgan Chinese handles a formal client lunch and a relaxed family meal equally well.

Stroller-friendly sushi restaurant near Nampo Station: Moshi Moshi

Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok is a Japanese sushi restaurant that has spent 7 years in the 10th-floor dining hall of the Lotte Department Store Gwangbok main building in Jung-gu, Busan. Visiting early on a weekday evening with a 9-month-old baby and a stroller, the writer ordered Set 4 (18 pieces of sushi + shrimp tempura + soba) and Assorted Sushi A (10 pieces), and found the vegetable and tofu salad dressings, the thick-cut sushi and the freshly fried shrimp tempura all satisfying. With department store parking and a nursing room on the same 10th floor, Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok makes eating out with a baby easy.

Moshi Moshi Sushi is an easy pick when you want to combine several dishes in a single visit.

Songjeong café for makgeolli black rice sulbbang: Suwolgyeonghwa

Suwolgyeonghwa is an ocean-view tea café on the 3rd and 4th floors of a building on Songjeong Jungang-ro 6-beon-gil in Haeundae, Busan, decorated with traditional Korean interiors. At the counter you can smell the loose tea leaves before ordering, and the writer picked Jeju Breeze (8,500 won); of the five desserts in the Dalbodeurae box (13,000 won), the makgeolli-fermented black rice sulbbang (steamed rice cake) was the best. Every seat, including the floor-seating tables on the 3rd floor, faces the sea, making Suwolgyeonghwa worth one stop on a Busan trip.

Fizz-free grapefruit and spicy clay-pot pasta in Haeundae: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Haeundae Branch is a pasta and risotto restaurant on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae, Busan. Skipping the couple's dish set, the writer ordered à la carte — sweet potato fries at 8,000 won, a fizz-free single grapefruit drink at 4,000 won, seafood tomato clay-pot pasta at 19,000 won and abalone cream risotto at 20,000 won — and the rice-flour-battered fries and the abalone risotto, with no fishy smell, were the standouts. The seafood tomato clay-pot pasta sauce at Bueokgan is genuinely spicy, so anyone sensitive to heat should order it with care.

Busan Premium Outlets family restaurant in Gijang, NORTH 1F: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Restaurant, Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets is a Western family restaurant on the first floor of the NORTH building (the older wing) of the Gijang outlet mall in Busan, right beside New Balance and the escalator. On this visit the couple ordered their usual napa cabbage Caesar salad at 16,000 won, lasagna at 21,000 won and sweet potato fries at 8,000 won, and Bueokgan had enough high chairs and toddler tableware that most of the tables were families with children. An easy place for a Western meal with a child in the middle of a shopping trip at the Gijang outlet.

Haeundae Chinese restaurant: double jjamppong rice for two, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is an ocean-view Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building in Marine City, Haeundae, Busan. Arriving right at opening after a night of drinking, the writer took a window seat and shared a double portion of beef brisket jjamppongbap (jjamppong soup over rice, 14,000 won), sooran ganjajang (black bean noodles with a poached egg, 10,000 won) and a small black vinegar tenderloin tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork, 28,000 won) — enough to leave two people stuffed. The jjamppongbap arrives with the bowl brimming with broth and works as a proper hangover cure, and parking is covered for 1 hour 30 minutes, so ask for the stamp.

Songjeong tea café with stairwell wave sounds: Suwolgyeonghwa, Busan

Suwolgyeonghwa is a Blue Ribbon-rated tea café on the 3rd and 4th floors of a building one minute on foot from Songjeong Beach in Busan. The order here was the caffeine-free Lemon Sunset tea, hojigabae (a hojicha latte), and the signature Dalbodre Box, and the wave sounds playing in the stairwell made the sea feel even closer. If the Haeundae and Gwangalli crowds have worn you out, the wide window-side ocean view at Suwolgyeonghwa is the answer.

Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok is a Japanese sushi restaurant on the 10th floor of the main building at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan. Set no. 2 comes with 16 pieces of sushi, chashu, vegetable salad, tofu salad, miso soup and a choice of noodles; on this visit the sushi was upgraded to premium and ramen was added for 4,000 won extra. With the add-ons it is not the cheapest way to eat here, but piling the chashu onto the ramen was the most memorable part of the meal.

The writer ordered three dishes — the Korean beef tartare set (19,000 won), assorted sushi B 10P plus 3 tempura (23,000 won) and flounder & salmon sushi 10P plus 3 tempura (27,500 won) — and ate generously, from the beef tartare rice bowl and mini udon to freshly fried shrimp, eggplant and sweet pumpkin tempura. Easy to reach and well suited to a meal before or after shopping or a film at Lotte Cinema.

Busan outlet Italian restaurant with whole chicken leg pilaf: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Restaurant is an Italian restaurant on NORTH 1F of the Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets in Gijang, Busan. After a 15-minute wait at 1:15pm on a Sunday, three of us shared carbonara (19,000 won), kung pao chicken pilaf (22,000 won) and pepperoni pizza (17,000 won), and the turkey-sized whole chicken leg and thick cream sauce were the standouts. Parking at the outlet is free, so Bueokgan is an easy lunch stop before a shopping run.
