Caffeine-free tea while pregnant at Suwolgyeonghwa, a Songjeong café

Suwolgyeonghwa is a fusion hanok tea café on the 3rd and 4th floors of a building on Songjeong Jungang-ro in Haeundae-gu, Busan, with ocean views from both levels. As a last stop before heading to Busan Station, the writer ordered Louis Wolju, a caffeine-free rooibos blend tea safe to drink during pregnancy, American-style gabae (iced Americano) and the Dalbodeure box of fusion Korean desserts. With Songjeong beach and the beach train in view from the window seats, Suwolgyeonghwa is a 1000% return visit.

Late-lunch tonkatsu with no wait via CatchTable: Hets Jeonpo, Busan

Hets Jeonpo Branch is a tonkatsu restaurant with bar-counter seating on the second floor along Jeonpo-daero in Busanjin, Busan. After registering ahead on CatchTable and arriving for a late lunch, only one group was waiting, so the seat came right away, and the order was hire katsu (pork tenderloin cutlet) and loin katsu served with truffle oil and corn dressing. If the roughly one-hour peak-time wait at Hets Jeonpo feels like too much, a late lunch booked on CatchTable is the answer.

Gijang, Busan Western restaurant with three dishes and cider: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Restaurant, Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets is a European-style Western restaurant at the very back of the outlet's North Plaza first floor (next to Ugg) in Gijang, Busan. Everything is ordered from the table-order tablet, and this visit covered shrimp anchovy oil pasta at 18,000 won, kung pao chicken pilaf at 22,000 won, rocket prosciutto pizza at 22,000 won and a cider. The kung pao chicken pilaf was the best pick, and Bueokgan handles a date or family meal without leaving the shopping route.

Dalmaji-gil restaurant in Busan: chewy truffle gnocchi at Bueokgan

Bueokgan Haeundae Branch is a Western restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae, Busan, in front of the SK View apartments, with a Chinese restaurant under the same brand on the 1st floor. During a Busan trip the writer ordered sweet potato fries (8,000 won), truffle mushroom cream gnocchi (22,000 won) and shrimp rosé pasta (20,000 won) from the tablet at the table, and the gnocchi was thick, chewy and generously portioned. With a wide hall, sofa seats and baby chairs, Bueokgan Haeundae Branch works just as well for group gatherings as for a date.

Haeundae Chinese restaurant after the beach with kids: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Haeundae, Busan, with Dongbaekseom ocean views, on the 2nd floor above Subyeon Choego Pork Gukbap on Marine City 3-ro. After a day at Haeundae Beach, the writer ordered poached-egg ganjajang (noodles with black bean sauce served separately), black vinegar tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork, small) and abalone fried rice for dinner with the kids, and found the handwashing sink at the entrance, the baby chair and 90 minutes of free parking at the Adelis complex genuinely easy with children. Between the ocean view and the quality of the food, Bueokgan Chinese stands out as a reasonably priced family dinner in Haeundae.

Jeonpo sashimi restaurant with caramel popcorn starter: Rigo Susan

Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch is a set-platter sashimi restaurant on Jeonpo-daero 216beon-gil in Busanjin, Busan. Visiting on a weekday after work, the writer ordered the small mixed sashimi set at 49,000 won plus a 10,000 won beer, and the caramel popcorn served as a free starter, the cold udon side and the fried food with tartar sauce were the standouts. Rigo Susan suits anyone who likes sashimi sliced thin and eats salmon.

Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch is a two-floor brunch café in Minnak-dong, Suyeong, Busan, open from 8am. Haeundae Korean restaurant with same-day milled rice: Songjeongok

Songjeongok Songjeong Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Songjeonggwangeogol-ro in Haeundae, Busan, serving abalone pot rice set meals. After a first visit with her parents over a holiday, the writer returned for the abalone pot rice and seafood hinoki-steam set for two (23,000 won): pot rice made with hwangmi rice milled at low temperature that same day, a base spread of pork bossam and seasoned raw crab, and sungnyung (scorched rice tea) to close. With a calm dining room and a self-serve banchan bar, Songjeongok suited a family meal with parents.

Nampo Station sushi restaurant with engawa nigiri: Moshi Moshi Sushi

Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok is a Japanese sushi restaurant on the 10th floor of the main building at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan. Two of us ordered Set no. 4 — 18 pieces of sushi, shrimp tempura and udon — and worked through engawa (halibut fin), salmon futomaki, beef, yukhoe (raw beef) and abalone nigiri, with the engawa sushi the clear best pick. Moshi Moshi Sushi makes an easy, quiet lunch near Nampo Station in the middle of a shopping trip.

With high chairs and partitioned seats, Moshi Moshi Sushi Dongnae works well for a meal with a child during a shopping trip.

Bueokgan Chinese Haeundae Branch is a roughly 50-pyeong Chinese restaurant on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae-gu, Busan. The writer and her boyfriend ordered poached egg pork belly jjajangmyeon, a mapo tofu rice bowl, menboxia (shiitake and shrimp fritter), paihuanggua (Chinese smashed cucumber salad) and zero-sugar cola, and the menboxia was fried to order, crisp and mild rather than sharply seasoned. With European furniture and an upscale mood, Bueokgan Chinese suits dates as well as family and group meals.

Jeonpo tonkatsu with no dinner wait and free refills: Hets, Busan

Hets Jeonpo Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant in Busanjin, Busan, a 297m walk from Exit 7 of Jeonpo Station. Arriving in the evening meant no wait at all, and with the limited sang loin katsu sold out, the meal was YBD loin katsu eaten with whole black pepper and wasabi.
