Songtan café: fig financiers and iced americano pairing at Cafe Pomun

Cafe Pomun is a standalone dessert café in Icheung-dong (Songtan), Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, with seating across the main building's two floors and a furniture-showroom annex next door. Arriving full after a meal, the writer still ordered fig and sweet potato financiers, a chestnut matcha chocolate cake, an iced americano and an iced latte. The crisp-outside, moist-inside financiers with the clean iced americano were the best pairing, and Cafe Pomun is worth remembering for dessert gifts too.

Paju garden café with salt bread and peppermint tea: On the Rail

On the Rail is a large bakery café beside a railway line on Imjingak-ro in Munsan-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi. After a day out at Imjingak, I stopped in for one salt bread (sogeumppang) and two cups of warm peppermint tea and ate at an outdoor garden table, where a self-serve microwave and plates are set out for warming bread. With roomy dedicated parking, On the Rail is an easy outdoor café to add to a Paju drive.

Jeongwang-dong restaurant with non-spicy royal bone stew: Cheongchun

Cheongchun Bulbbyeojjim & Gamjatang Jeongwang Station branch is a braised pork bone and gamjatang (pork bone soup) restaurant in the main shopping arcade of Jeongwang-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi. On a weekday lunch with her mother, the writer skipped the fiery version and ordered the sweet-savoury Cheongchun gungjung bbyeojjim (royal braised pork bone) in the small size for 34,000 won, which came with complimentary steamed egg plus rice cake, quail eggs, wedge potatoes, wide glass noodles and enoki mushrooms already in the pot — enough to fill two people with no extras. For anyone eating with a guest who cannot take chilli, the gungjung bbyeojjim at Cheongchun Bulbbyeojjim & Gamjatang Jeongwang Station branch is the safe pick.

Pocheon baby-friendly restaurant: beef tomato pasta at Eoneu Dal

Eoneu Dal is a pasta and risotto restaurant in a standalone building at 54 Jeongmun-dong-gil in Pocheon, Gyeonggi. On a first outing after childbirth with two babies, the meal was beef tomato pasta (₩20,000), mushroom pilaf (₩18,000) and chicken risotto (₩20,000), and Eoneu Dal had high chairs plus kids' cups, forks, spoons and scissors. Arriving at 12:39 on a Sunday meant waiting until 13:40 to be seated, but all three dishes delivered, and the beef tomato pasta alone is reason to return.

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a 30-year-old restaurant on Naktagogae hill in Deokyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi, making its own makguksu (chilled buckwheat noodles) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) in house. The writer and his wife ordered perilla-buckwheat kalguksu, bibim makguksu and a buckwheat pancake, and every order arrives with a starter of barley rice, house-made kimchi, perilla oil and gochujang. For noodles that are mild and easy on the stomach, Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a good fit.

Suwon BBQ with boneless prime rib for three: Jipbul Taebaek

Jipbul Taebaek Suwon Ingye Branch is a beef BBQ restaurant on Nahyeseok-geori street in Ingye-dong, Suwon, serving prime rib (udaegalbi) first seared over rice straw and charcoal. Dongtan Central Park kimchi jjigae set with ramyeon sari: Yangpuni

Yangpuni Kimchi Jjigae & Samgyeopsal is a Korean meat-and-stew restaurant in Bansong-dong, near Dongtan Central Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, cooking with Korean-grown kimchi and fresh Korean pork. Osan hanjeongsik restaurant, dinner with no reservation: Bomseol

Bomseol Main Branch is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant on Oesammi-ro in Osan, Gyeonggi, run by a certified Korean food master and known as a spot for family introductions and group gatherings between Dongtan and Osan. On a weekday evening after work, with no reservation, we sat on the first floor and ordered the Bomseol table for two through the kiosk at the table — 18,000 won per person for braised pollock, stir-fried pork, eight side dishes, stone-pot rice with crispy scorched rice, and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew). Arriving close to closing time at Bomseol Main Branch meant an easy seat and a home-style spread for well under 20,000 won a head.

Table kiosk ordering at Seoul Myeonok, a Pyeongtaek naengmyeon spot

Seoul Myeonok is a 60-year-old pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant near Exit 1 of Pyeongtaek Station in Gyeonggi. Arriving on a Sunday at 5:30 pm with no wait, two big eaters used the table kiosk to order pyongyang naengmyeon (11,000 won), bibim naengmyeon (11,000 won) and a half plate of Korean pork (suyuk), and left completely full. Even a naengmyeon beginner fell for the mild, clean broth at Seoul Myeonok — a great-value meal.

Yangpyeong Korean set-course lunch near Yongmunsan: Ochan Hoedong

Hyangnam charcoal rib set for two, 1kg: Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi

Geochang Sutbul Jjokgalbi Hwaseong Hyangnam is a charcoal-grilled jjokgalbi (pork rib strips) restaurant in Hyangnam 2 District, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Because the wait here is famously long, we put our name down in advance through CatchTable and ordered the 2-person set (1,000g jjokgalbi + seafood sujebi) for 53,900 won, split into two salt, one sauce and one spicy. Rotating between the three flavours kept a full kilo from getting boring, and the seafood sujebi, whose dough you tear in yourself, made a filling finish.
