Taejang Sikdang Suwon Station Branch is a frozen pork belly restaurant on the second floor of Suwon Rodeo Street. Stopping by as a second course after skewers with family, three of us ordered 2 servings of 6mm pork belly, 1 serving of 4mm, and Taejang bibim noodles to compare the thicknesses side by side. The 6mm cut was chewy and the 4mm was soft — if you like frozen pork belly (naengsam), either thickness works.
Saechamcoffee (새참커피) is a wood-toned brunch café tucked into an alley off Daengri-dan-gil in Anyang, Gyeonggi. After a kids' hospital visit nearby, the writer stopped in for a truffle jambon-beurre sandwich set (14,000 won), levain cookies, and a cup of patbingsu, and was struck by the dedicated dog cushions set out for pet owners. With hand-drip coffee, drip bags to go, and quiet solo-work seating, it works equally well for a family brunch or a laptop afternoon alone.
Jeong Jiyoung Coffee Roasters Lotte Premium Outlet Uiwang Branch is a café from a Suwon local coffee brand, located on the 3rd floor of Lotte Premium Outlets Uiwang in Uiwang, Gyeonggi. Stopping by close to 9pm on a weekday after shopping, the writer had yogurt strawberry, iced black sesame latte, and fig earl grey cake in an almost-empty store that felt like having the place to themselves. The layered black sesame latte and the not-too-sweet fig cake were especially satisfying.
Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is a ssambap (leaf-wrap rice) restaurant near the Paju Lotte Outlet in Gyeonggi. Visiting on a weekday early evening, the writer ordered the 20,000 won deul jeongsik set and finished everything from sweet pumpkin porridge to hot-pot rice, homemade doenjang stew, self-serve ssam vegetables, stir-fried pork and squid, and finishing sungnyung (scorched rice water). With baby chairs and a kids menu on hand, it worked easily as a family meal with a baby in tow.
Neul Gogi Jip Icheon Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Gyeongchung-daero in Icheon, Gyeonggi, serving a lunch special until 2:30pm. The writer visited with her mom for the soy crab and jeyuk (spicy pork stir-fry) ssambap set at 24,900 won per person, finding the soy crab neither fishy nor too salty and the jeyuk tender with a nice smoky flavor. With individual pot rice, a doenjang stew loaded with beef tendon, and unlimited self-serve lettuce wraps, it made for a satisfying lunch with parents.
Café Meomureum is a bakery café on the 2nd floor of Dongsin Shopping Center in Jeongja-dong, Suwon, near Manseok Park. Visiting for post-lunch dessert and laptop work, the writer sat in the partitioned study-café section and had an extra-shot iced americano with salt bread and walnut pie. With separate spaces for chatting and focusing, it's a great café to visit solo for work.
Gongdan Gamjatang Samgyeopsal Siheung Main Branch is a 38-year-old pork BBQ and gamjatang (pork bone soup) restaurant in Jangok-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the mixed pork half-plate (400g) with rice-topped jeyuk and Motijeo Bulnaengmyeon, and since ordering half a plate of meat or more comes with a free gamjatang, the meal was seriously filling. If you're after great value and old-school charm, this place delivers.
Hanmaeum Jeongyuk Sikdang Hanam Misa Branch is an aged-meat Korean BBQ restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Water Castle building near Hanam Sports Complex in Hanam, Gyeonggi. The dolpan soseokgalbi (stone plate short rib) at ₩42,000 and aged pork belly/jowl at ₩16,900 came with unlimited refills of doenjang stew and grilled mackerel as banchan, plus a kids' room visible from the table. A solid pick for family meals or group gatherings.
Boulangerie Tan, Hyundai Department Store KINTEX is a bakery on the basement 1 food floor of Hyundai Department Store in Goyang, Gyeonggi, a branch of the popular Unjeong Chorongkkot Village original. This visit tried all four cornet pie flavors — vanilla, caramel, raspberry matcha, and pistachio — plus a sweet pumpkin cream cheese campagne, and the cornet pie turned out to be a firm, crisp pastry shell packed with sweet cream rather than a flaky pastry. The cream runs quite sweet so it pairs well with coffee or tea, and the lineup also makes a decent gift set.
Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Baegun Lake Branch is a wood-fired fish grill restaurant near Baegun Lake in Uiwang, Gyeonggi. On a Monday weekday lunch, a couple ordered the boyang (health-boosting) 2-person set with pot rice for ₩45,000 and worked through three kinds of grilled fish — domestic sea eel, oily flounder, and Norwegian mackerel — plus a spicy braised mackerel and an unlimited self-serve bar with more than 10 side dishes. Even a couple who aren't big fish eaters were won over by the smoky char and easy-on-the-stomach meal, and they're already planning to bring their parents back for Chuseok.
Rolling Pasta Suwon Station Branch is a casual Western food restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building right across from Suwon Station in Gyeonggi. Ordering vongole pasta, Rolling hamburg steak, and a side of coleslaw and alternating bites, the pasta's subtle spiciness paired well with the hamburg steak's sweet demi-glace sauce. It's a good spot for a quick, affordable pasta meal near Suwon Station.
Jigueseo On Jjukkumi Hanam Main Branch is a jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) restaurant in Chungung-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi, that cooks with perilla oil. The writer borrowed a baby chair before her baby's first-birthday photoshoot and ordered two perilla-oil jjukkumi set meals (₩13,000 each) plus a seafood pancake (₩15,000), refilling the perilla-oil seaweed soup along the way. It was easy even with a baby, and dessert ice cream and coffee were waiting at the end.
