Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Bucheon Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant in the Wonmisan food alley in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, about 800m from both Gachiul Station and Bucheon Stadium Station. Arriving at 11:30am, the writer drew waiting number 8 and was seated within 10 minutes, then ordered the tteuranchae bapsang set for two (13,000 won each) plus cockle salad (16,000 won); the braised potatoes were refilled at the self-serve corner and the cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) came back freshly reboiled. With pot rice, nurungji and an espresso on the way out, Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang feels like a home-cooked spread worth the short wait.

Uijeongbu market sweet crispy chicken: garlic soy glaze at Dalgom's

Dalgom's is a dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) shop inside Jeil Market in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Dalgom's puts its stainless-steel kitchen and clean frying oil front and centre, and the writer took away the three-person one-and-a-half-chicken set (24,000 won) in three flavours: sweet glaze, garlic soy glaze and cheese seasoning. The batter carried no off or burnt taste and tasted as clean as Japanese-style frying, and calling 10 minutes ahead is the way to get it freshly fried.

Autumn foliage drive stop in Gwangju: Namhansanseong bakery café Sum

Sum is a large bakery café on Ojeon-gil in Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Stopping by on an autumn foliage drive, I had coffee and bakery items while looking out at the forest through the café's big picture windows, and with seating on the first floor, second floor and a separate annex, finding a table was easy. Sum works well as the last rest stop on a Namhansanseong outing.

Salon Dohe Sanbon Branch is an eyelash perm salon on Sanbon-ro 323beon-gil in Gunpo, Gyeonggi. After checking eye shape and lash condition, the owner recommended a C curl, and the black clinic perm took about an hour with no eye stinging or gritty feeling — enough to fall asleep, despite a past lash perm that stung so much it had to be stopped. The verdict: eyes look defined even bare-faced, which cuts down morning prep time.
