Korean BBQ with SUV parking near Sunae Station: Jeju Monteurak

Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch is a Jeju black pork BBQ restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sunae Station in Bundang-gu, Seongnam. Two diners ordered the Jeju Bansang set, which brings ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), pork neck and a seafood doenjang stew, and staff grilled the meat over charcoal at the table. An SUV cannot use the car-elevator garage under the Gratea building, so Jeju Monteurak sends drivers to the Bobos Chervil lot next door; the best bite of the night was ogyeopsal with the shrimp-paste, garlic and sesame oil sauce in a lettuce wrap.

Bundang sashimi restaurant: 39,000-won wild makhoe at Pohang Makhoe

Pohang Makhoe is a wild-caught makhoe (roughly sliced raw fish) restaurant on the first floor of Prugio City in Jeongja-dong, Bundang, Seongnam. On a weekend evening a couple ordered the medium wild makhoe platter for 39,000 won and a Terra beer for 5,000 won, and that day's fish were gizzard shad, yellowtail amberjack and spotted flounder. Eaten Pohang style — vegetables and seaweed tossed in the house vinegar-chili sauce and wrapped in a leaf — it was a filling dinner that still sat lightly.

Gwacheon duck BBQ with an 18-month-old, marble ice cream: Deo Chadol

Deo Chadol is a duck BBQ restaurant near Seonbawi Station in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. After a day at Seoul Land and the Seoul Grand Park Zoo, the writer stopped in with an 18-month-old for the couple course — duck chadol (brisket-cut duck), duck jumulleok (sweet-spicy stir-fry) and fried rice — and found baby chairs wiped down with wet wipes, plus marble ice cream for dessert. The mild duck chadol made this the meal the baby ate best at on any recent night out.

Clear-broth shabu-shabu with fish balls in Anyang: Ppongip Sarang

Ppongip Sarang Anyang Arts Park branch is a mulberry-leaf shabu-shabu restaurant near the entrance to Anyang Arts Park in Anyang, Gyeonggi. On a second visit the special shabu for two came with clear broth instead of spicy, plus added roe-filled fish balls, mulberry-leaf bossam (boiled pork wraps), green mulberry-leaf kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) and fried rice to finish. The clear broth at Ppongip Sarang tastes cleaner and lighter than the spicy version, so the broth choice alone changes the whole meal.

Spicy jjukkumi shabu kalguksu near Geolpo-Bukbyeon Station: Homilwon

Homilwon Shabu Kalguksu Gimpo Main Branch is a shabu kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant in Geolpo-dong, Gimpo, Gyeonggi, built around an agaricus mushroom broth. On a weekday at 11:30 am, after a hospital appointment at Gimpo Woori Hospital, the writer and her husband shared two servings of the 19,000-won full-spread special shabu kalguksu, working through onsuyuk (warm boiled pork), fire-grilled spicy jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) stir-fry, self-serve beef mushroom radish rice, rye kalguksu and perilla oil fried rice. Even after all that food there was no heavy, bloated feeling, which makes Homilwon her top recommendation in Gimpo.
