Chicken hot pot with a tangy chicken salad side in Migeum: Sugyeokok

Sugyeokok Bundang Migeum is a dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) restaurant on Migeumil-ro in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The order here was the regular dak hanmari with a chicken salad side and a noodle set, mixing the dipping sauce by hand and eating in order from rice cakes to chicken breast, chicken leg and a final round of kalguksu noodles. The tangy chicken salad against the mild hot pot, plus a clean, deep broth, is what makes Sugyeokok Bundang Migeum worth the trip.

Doseogwan Dwitjip is a Chinese restaurant in a residential area behind Cheongdeok Library in Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. Dongtan Mokdong pork cutlet, Sunday lunch 5-minute wait: Kkot Gatsu

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch is a handmade pork cutlet (donkatsu) restaurant in the Mokdong residential area of Dongtan, Hwaseong. A Sunday lunch visit meant a 5-minute wait before being seated, and the tenderloin cutlet called Kkot Gatsu (15,000 won) and the loin cutlet (14,000 won) were dipped in turn in truffle salt, lemon salt and wasabi, with truffle oil and cumin sauce from the self-serve bar. Kkot Gatsu is the kind of pork cutlet that turns a lifelong sauce person into a salt dipper.

Guinea pig carrot feeding at Artis Theme Park, a Dongtan indoor zoo

Artis Theme Park is an indoor eco-education theme park on the 9th floor of Sinyu Medi Plaza in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Visiting just with my youngest son, we bought the 6,900-won full feeding set for 7 species and fed carrots to guinea pigs, touched starfish, tried doctor fish and fed stingrays, then collected stamps for a badge. Artis Theme Park works rain or shine and includes 3 hours of free parking, making it an easy half-day out with a child.

Pyeongtaek restaurant for spicy seafood stew and homemade sikhye

Pyeongtaek Jumulleok is a jumulleok (marinated grilled meat) restaurant that has stood in one spot beside Tongbok Market near Pyeongtaek Station in Gyeonggi Province since 1973. For lunch a couple ordered the soy jumulleok solo set at 10,000 won, spicy seafood stew (honghaetang) at 12,000 won, special bibim naengmyeon, fried shrimp and homemade sikhye (sweet rice punch), and the peppery stew and the barely sweet sikhye stood out most. Pyeongtaek Jumulleok was satisfying enough that the couple bought a 1L bottle of sikhye to take home.

Gondre beef fried rice at Dorimgwan, a Hyangnam Korean BBQ spot

Dorimgwan Hyangnam is a charcoal-grilled garlic marinated short rib restaurant on Seobong-ro in Hyangnam-eup, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. The writer brought her mother here for a restorative meal of garlic-marinated galbisal (short rib meat) grilled over charcoal, then finished with the beef gondre (mountain vegetable) fried rice that only Dorimgwan serves, cooked on a hot plate. The house tip at Dorimgwan: skip the bowl of rice, eat the meat first, and add the gondre fried rice at the end.

Late-night Korean restaurant in Gonjiam open till 10pm: Oneuldo Utja

Oneuldo Utja Chowol is a pork duruchigi (stir-fried pork) and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) restaurant on Sansu-ro in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, near Gonjiam, and it stays open until 22:00 on weekdays, so a late dinner after overtime is still possible. The order was pork duruchigi for two at 25,000 won with two sotbap (hot-pot rice) and a jumbo rolled egg at 10,000 won, and the suhyangmi sotbap was good enough that the writer's mother called the rice truly delicious. With banchan, seaweed soup and rice refills at the self-serve bar, Oneuldo Utja Chowol makes a filling meal for anyone eating late in Chowol-eup.

Dog-friendly Namyangju pizza restaurant with Han River views: Pibing

Pibing Paldang Branch is a dog-friendly pizza restaurant on Paldang-ro in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, filling an entire building above the Han River. Korean BBQ with a baby in Dongtan, Hwaseong: Gogigaondang Dongtan

Gogigaondang Dongtan Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Bansong-dong, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, where ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly) is grilled on a cauldron lid.
