Flowerpot Cafe & Bakery is a three-story bakery café near Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi. On a weekday evening visit, the order was injeolmi (chewy rice cake) patbingsu and a mont blanc, eaten before watching the sunset from the third floor's indoor and outdoor seating, and the nutty, chewy injeolmi was the most memorable part. With a large parking lot and a wide third-floor view, Flowerpot Cafe & Bakery is an easy stop on a Mulwang Reservoir drive or date course.

Chicken kalguksu near Bokjeong Station, Seongnam: Cheongdam Dak

Cheongdam Dak Kalguksu Seongnam is a Korean restaurant near Bokjeong Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, serving chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) that you order with green onion topping, seaweed topping or in a spicy version. Hantiok Lotte Department Store Pyeongchon Branch is a Korean restaurant on basement level 1 of the Lotte Department Store Pyeongchon branch, by Beomgye Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi. The beef ugeoji gukbap set (₩21,000) and the Andong guksi set (₩22,000) brought a perilla-scented soup, jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork), bossam (boiled pork) and dumplings, and the food arrived fast. Hantiok is an easy pick for a hearty Korean meal with parents in the middle of a department store shopping trip.

Spicy chashu ramen and beef gyukatsu in Gwangmyeong: Hoka Hoka

Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is a ramen and gyukatsu (Japanese deep-fried beef cutlet) restaurant a 3–4 minute walk from Exit 3 of Cheolsan Station in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi. Over dinner the writer ordered the 130g chuck flap gyukatsu at 19,000 won, the spicy chashu ramen at 12,500 won and a side of tempura at 2,500 won; the gyukatsu's batter clung to the meat and kept the juices in, while the ramen tasted spicy and clean with no meaty off-smell. Hoka Hoka Gwangmyeong Main Branch is worth booking a table at near Cheolsan Station when you want gyukatsu and spicy ramen in one meal.

Yongin kalguksu restaurant weekend opening run: Jangwongap Kalguksu

Jangwongap Kalguksu Yongin Giheung Branch is a shabu kalguksu (hot pot noodle) course restaurant at 90 Gomae-ro, Giheung-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. On a weekend revisit timed to the 10:30 AM opening, the writer ate the five-course kalguksu (12,000 won per person), a whole shrimp seafood pancake (13,500 won) and abalone, then finished with old-fashioned snacks and a misugaru (roasted grain powder) shake in the waiting area. The parking lot was already more than half full at 10:40 AM, so an opening run is the smart move at Jangwongap Kalguksu on weekends.

Jowatso Janghowon Gamgok Main Branch is a charcoal-grilled beef restaurant in Janghowon-eup, Icheon, Gyeonggi. Ganjjajang lunch at Jangsu, a Chinese restaurant in Godeok, Pyeongtaek

Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom is a Chinese restaurant on Godeokbuk-ro in Godeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, serving Gobul Jjambbong and other jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) alongside ganjjajang (stir-fried black bean noodles), fried rice and sweet and sour pork. A weekend lunch here brought ganjjajang at 10,000 won, shrimp fried rice at 10,000 won and a small sweet and sour pork at 15,000 won, with noodles that never went soggy and pork loin under a thin, light batter. Jangsu Jjambbong Jeonmunjeom gets the basics right across the board, so any order is a safe one.

Boulangerie Tan Unjeong Main Branch is the flagship bakery in Dongpae-dong, Unjeong, Paju, and its pastries are also sold at Hyundai Department Store. A 2pm visit to Boulangerie Tan brought home five dessert pastries — pain au chocolat 4,500 won, gourmet butter salt bread 2,900 won, flan 5,600 won, chocolate baguette 5,300 won and vanilla cornet pie 3,500 won — and the French-style flan on a pastry base and the crisp-yet-chewy vanilla cornet pie were the standouts. The popular pistachio cornet pie was already sold out, so visit Boulangerie Tan before 1pm.

Sannae Sutbul Galbi Bakdal Branch is a charcoal-grilled seasoned pork rib restaurant near exit 5 of Bakdal Market in Anyang, Gyeonggi. Korean pork seasoned galbi is 15,000 won for 250g, and eating it with scallion salad, pickled onion and a dab of wasabi cut the richness and lifted the flavour of the marinade, with mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle soup) on the side. With group tables, separated family seating and a private room, Sannae Sutbul Galbi handles both family dinners and larger gatherings.

Songtan café: fig financiers and iced americano pairing at Cafe Pomun

Cafe Pomun is a standalone dessert café in Icheung-dong (Songtan), Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, with seating across the main building's two floors and a furniture-showroom annex next door. Arriving full after a meal, the writer still ordered fig and sweet potato financiers, a chestnut matcha chocolate cake, an iced americano and an iced latte. The crisp-outside, moist-inside financiers with the clean iced americano were the best pairing, and Cafe Pomun is worth remembering for dessert gifts too.

Paju garden café with salt bread and peppermint tea: On the Rail

On the Rail is a large bakery café beside a railway line on Imjingak-ro in Munsan-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi. After a day out at Imjingak, I stopped in for one salt bread (sogeumppang) and two cups of warm peppermint tea and ate at an outdoor garden table, where a self-serve microwave and plates are set out for warming bread. With roomy dedicated parking, On the Rail is an easy outdoor café to add to a Paju drive.
