Uijeongbu BBQ: pork belly grilled with aged kimchi, Geuttaegeujip

Geuttaegeujip is a 24-hour cauldron-lid pork belly restaurant in the Sinsigaji food alley of Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Two servings of pork belly came with soju and aged kimchi laid on the side of the cauldron lid where the fat runs off, and one serving of pork neck was added later. The meat quality, the kimchi and the homemade side dishes all held up, so Geuttaegeujip is the answer for cauldron-lid kimchi pork belly in Uijeongbu Sinsigaji.

Saechamcoffee is a sandwich and brunch café in Manan-gu, Anyang, near Daengridan-gil. Sandwiches at Saechamcoffee are a weekend-only menu, and the room is large enough for a slow, unhurried brunch.

Layered perm and root volume at a Paju Unjeong hair salon: Tthe Art

Tthe Art Hair Unjeong Station Branch is a hair salon in Paju, Gyeonggi, on the 2nd floor of the Aju parking building right across from Starfield Village at Unjeong Station. A layered cut, layered perm (S-perm) and root volume treatment on natural hair — no curling iron, no air wrap — took about 3 hours with Designer Seunghwan. The cut is slow because it is worked strand by strand, but the root volume at Tthe Art Hair still holds after a plain blow-dry at home.

Mild-spice octopus rice bowl near Begonia Garden in Gapyeong: Paldang

Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi is a flame-grilled jjukkumi (baby octopus) rice bowl restaurant on Hanseo-ro in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi. Stopping in with a baby after visiting Begonia New Garden, the writer ordered two grilled octopus and pork belly rice bowls (14,000 won) and a handmade pork loin cutlet (11,000 won), and was surprised by a self-serve bar with tteokbokki, sundae and fried mandu plus free sikhye and coffee. The heat stays gentle enough for people who can't take spice while the smoky char flavor runs deep, making Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi worth another stop on any trip to Seorak in Gapyeong.

A room booked through Naver Reservation made the meal private and relaxed, which suited both a family gathering and a company dinner.

Galbi restaurant in Misa, Hanam with playroom CCTV at your table

Hanmaeum Jeongyuk Sikdang Hanam Misa Branch is a Korean BBQ and galbi restaurant on the 3rd floor of the Misa Obelisk mall in Hanam, Gyeonggi. Visiting with two children, the writer ordered the stone-plate soseok galbi (short ribs), which arrived already grilled, so neither parent had to tend the meat, while the kids' playroom CCTV on the table order pad made it easy to watch the children from the table. With a wide kids' play area, baby chairs and baby dishware, unlimited doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and grilled mackerel among the standard side dishes, Hanmaeum Jeongyuk Sikdang is a Misa meat restaurant the family already plans to revisit with the kids.

The white burger cost 13,900 won and the 10-inch combination pizza 17,800 won, 31,700 won in total, and what stayed with me was the cold, tangy onion white sauce and the toppings packed across the whole 10-inch pie.
