Gochang Pungcheon Eel is a grilled eel restaurant of more than 20 years in the food alley behind Save Zone, by Exits 7 and 8 of Sangdong Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. The writer ate salt-grilled eel (₩35,000), eel hotpot rice (₩22,000) and Jangsu eel soup (₩10,000) with a young child, and staff grilled every piece at the table while a private room and a baby chair kept the meal easy. With 2 hours of free parking on floors 2–5 of the building's parking tower, Gochang Pungcheon Eel works for both family meals and work dinners.

Dongsak-dong lamb BBQ restaurant for group dinners: Hwaro Yangmi

Low Five is a casual Western restaurant in the Haenggung-dong area of Suwon, Gyeonggi, where pizza, pasta and kimchi fried rice all share one menu. Arriving at 5pm, just as Low Five's break time ended, the writer ordered Alfredo cream pasta (18,000 won), a half-and-half pizza (26,000 won), avocado kimchi fried rice (14,000 won) and grapefruit ade (6,000 won). The cream sauce and the bite of the noodles made the Alfredo cream pasta a new favourite, and Low Five works just as easily for a meal with a friend as for a date.

Dongtan hair salon wedding hair color in ash brown level 7: Juno Hair

Paju café with spoon-soft ripened mango and purée: Fruit Forest

Fruit Forest Paju Direct Store is a fruit dessert café in a three-story building on Dolgoji-gil, the food street below Simhaksan mountain in Paju, Gyeonggi. Mangoes sit stacked around the shop as they ripen, and the fresh mango bingsu (shaved ice dessert) at Fruit Forest arrives with one and a half whole mangoes, a bowl for sharing and a side of mango purée. The fully ripened mango slices apart with a spoon and has no fibrous strings, and that is what makes this café worth the trip.

Siksa-dong grilled fish restaurant in Ilsan: Atka mackerel kiosk set

Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo Siksa Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant on Wisiti 1-ro in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. Visiting with her mother, the writer ordered the mackerel set for 17,000 won and the Atka mackerel set for 19,000 won on the table kiosk, and ate them with pot rice, banchan and a self-serve bibimbap and side dish bar that kept every bite interesting. Hwadegeuro Gan Godeungeo is worth the trip when grilling fish at home feels like too much work.

Dog-friendly bakery café in Yangpyeong with gallery annex: Pistache

Pistache by Capore is a large dog-friendly bakery café in Gangha-myeon, Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi. The writer visited with her mother and their dog Guwol, ordered coffee, salt bread and a raspberry grain baguette, met the mascot poodle Mac and two kittens, and walked through the gallery-like annex and the outdoor path. Pistache by Capore has more to look at than to eat, which makes it a good stop on a Yangpyeong drive.

Suwon Station Rodeo Street yukhoe platter for two: Yukhoe Dokjon

A married couple stopped in early on a Friday afternoon and ordered the hanwoo yukhoe platter for two, hanwoo sushi and a bottle of Byeolbit Cheongha (Korean rice wine), and both the yukhoe and the beef sashimi tasted clean with no gamey smell. With beef and radish soup simmering on a mini brazier, Yukhoe Dokjon is an easy place for a meal and a drink.

Grilled 4mm pork belly for three near Suwon Station: Taejang Sikdang
