Dangsan pub for after-work pepperoni pizza: Long Time No See

Long Time No See Dangsan Branch is a pizza and beer pub one minute's walk from Exit 12 of Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. After work I ordered the Long Time Peach Set chicken and a pepperoni pizza with cheese crust added to the rim, then added hot sauce and parmesan from the self-bar. With several draft beers on self-tap that you pour by the amount you want, Long Time No See handles pizza and beer plus chicken and beer in one sitting.

Midnight seafood jjampong and japchae rice in Mokdong: Yugwanjang

Yugwanjang Banjeom Omokgyo Station Branch is a 24-hour Chinese restaurant in Mokdong, Yangcheon, Seoul, one minute from Line 5 Omokgyo Station Exit 2. On a late-night visit the order was bone-broth seafood jjampong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for 11,000 won, japchae rice for 10,000 won and mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) for 13,000 won, and the bone-broth jjampong soup was the most memorable part. If you like deep, rich Chinese-style broth, Yugwanjang Banjeom is worth a late-night stop.

Seongsu gyukatsu restaurant with private mini grills: Gyuen Dang

Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant on the second floor of an alley off Yeonmujang 7-ga-gil in Seongsu, Seoul. For lunch the writer ordered the tenderloin gyukatsu at 24,000 won and the hamburg omelet rice at 17,000 won, grilled the cutlet with a pat of butter on the private mini charcoal grill at the table, and dipped it in ginger sauce so it never tasted heavy. With a grill for each diner, Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch suits a lunch date and solo dining equally well.

Yeonnam-dong pizza restaurant for day drinking: Sunny's Pizza Market

Group dinner pork belly with myeoljeot dip in Seocho: Yuk Tongryeong

Yuk Tongryeong Gyodae Direct Store is a Blue Ribbon-listed samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly) restaurant on the main street outside Exit 14 of Gyodae Station in Seocho, Seoul. A walk-in at 7pm on a weekday meant a wait, and the order was yukgyeopsal (six-layer pork belly) plus ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), grilled over charcoal by staff and dipped in myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce). Generous side dishes — the scallion salad was refilled three times — and a grown-up, understated room make Yuk Tongryeong an easy pick for a company dinner or a business meeting.

Nonhyeon pasta restaurant solo dinner: burrata paccheri at Pasta Trio

Pasta Trio is an Italian pasta restaurant in Seocho, Seoul, a 1-minute walk from Nonhyeon Station Exit 5. Arriving at 6:40pm on a weekday, the wait at Pasta Trio was about 15 minutes, and the solo dinner was burrata cheese basil pesto paccheri at 23,000 won plus spinacini, 4 pieces for 10,000 won. The paccheri is pleasantly spicy, the spinacini is the surprise standout, and adding the 1,000 won creme brulee makes for a clean finish.

Golmokjip Galbisal Yeonsinnae Main Branch is a charcoal beef grill on Yeonseo-ro 27-gil near Yeonsinnae Station in Eunpyeong, Seoul. Returning to a college-day favorite, the writer ordered two servings of raw galbisal (unmarinated beef rib meat), muksabal (acorn jelly in cold broth, 3,900 won) and bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) arrived free of charge. This was not nostalgia talking — Golmokjip Galbisal tastes even better now, and the writer will pay their own way back.

Gwanghwamun café with oat milk latte and jambon-beurre: Lemangdoré

Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun is a three-floor French-style bakery café on Mugyo-ro in Jung-gu, Seoul. The order here was an oat milk latte made with the café's Noir beans (₩7,000) and a jambon-beurre sandwich (₩11,000), with a look around the 1st-floor goods shop, the 2nd-floor seating area and the 3rd-floor Fritz Hansen showroom. The nutty oat milk latte was the standout at Lemangdoré, and the same pairing is worth ordering again.
