Euljiro 3-ga soup restaurant, 20-minute weekday wait: Eulji Baektan

Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is a white-charcoal grill restaurant right outside Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a weekday evening there were 3 parties ahead, and after re-registering on the waitlist and waiting more than 20 minutes, the writer sat on the 2nd floor and ordered ppyeo gamjatang (pork bone and potato soup), which had a clean broth and meat that fell straight off the bone. The one letdown at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui: rice is not sold separately.

Yongsan mall ramen with clean sari gomtang-style broth: Menya Seoul

Menya Seoul Yongsan I'Park Mall Branch is a chashu-focused ramen restaurant on the 7th floor of I'Park Mall, connected to Yongsan Station in Seoul. One visit covered three bowls at once — dongpo pork chashu ramen, jambon chashu ramen and pork belly mazesoba — with one main swapped into a 3,900 won set for a Coke and 3 crispy gyoza. Menya Seoul's broth tastes like a refined version of sari gomtang (instant beef bone soup), so it suits anyone who wants a clean, light bowl rather than a heavy ramen.

Yangjae Station chicken stew for two with ramen noodles: Yanggyegok

Yanggyegok is a Korean restaurant serving dakgalbi and chicken stew a two-minute walk from Exit 4 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The small dakbokkeumtang (spicy chicken stew) for two costs 31,000 won and comes with free ramen noodles, with fried rice at 3,000 won, a 10,000 won lunch special and a self-serve bar of side dishes including pickled pepper strips. The stew at Yanggyegok grows richer as the broth reduces, and the takeout order was good enough that both of the writer's daughters finished a full bowl of rice.

Parang Haenyeojip Sinsa Direct Store is a seafood Korean pub on Garosugil in Gangnam, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Sinsa Station. Mid-diet but with a dinner plan to keep, the writer ordered the rock octopus with Jeju bossam (34,000 won), a bottle of cheongha and a side of sushi rice, and two women left full. Parang Haenyeojip serves plenty of protein-led dishes and stays quiet enough to hold a conversation.

Birthday dinner at Modam, an Itaewon Korean restaurant: ₩49,000 sets

Modam Itaewon is a heritage Korean set-menu restaurant (hanjeongsik) on the first floor of the Mondrian Hotel in Yongsan, Seoul. On a weekday evening for a friend's birthday, the handmade tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) set and the Beopseongpo dried corvina set came to ₩49,000 each, each preceded by an appetizer course of porridge, salad, sweet-crisp mushrooms, chilled gimbugak (fried seaweed) salad and sashimi, then perilla leaf sorbet and a rice cake brought out for the birthday. Between the food, the service and the interior, Modam Itaewon is an easy pick for anniversaries or meeting the in-laws.

Seoul department store food court lunch in Nowon: Hantiok bossam set

Hantiok Lotte Department Store Nowon Branch is a Korean restaurant on the 9th floor food court of Lotte Department Store Nowon, connected directly to Nowon Station in Seoul. After shopping, the writer ordered the bossam set for two at 20,000 won per person, which came with bossam (boiled pork with wraps), salad, mandu (dumplings) and tofu, plus one Andong gukbap and one Andong guksu. The pork had no gamey smell and the broths were clean and light, making Hantiok a proper Korean lunch spread right after shopping.

Sutbul Seonghwa is an aged hanwoo (Korean beef) grill restaurant at the entrance of Songnidan-gil in Songpa, Seoul, right in front of the east side of Seokchon Lake. Saved after seeing White House chef Andre Rush eat here, Sutbul Seonghwa turned out to be a memorable hanwoo splurge for a special day.

Sadang izakaya for beef tendon oden stew: Susan Sadang Main Branch

Susan Sadang Main Branch is an izakaya on Nambusunhwan-ro271ga-gil near Sadang Station in Dongjak, Seoul, serving sashimi, yukhoe (Korean beef tartare) and oden (fish cake stew) as drinking food. Two friends came for dinner and ordered suji oden (beef tendon and fish cake stew) at 30,000 won and yukhoe maki at 25,000 won, taking a table on the lower floor because the first floor was packed. Alternating between the warm broth and the beef tartare worked so well that Susan Sadang Main Branch is worth noting for friend meetups and work dinners.

Gangnam Station late-night Chinese: mala noodle soup, Sinbok Myeongwan

Sinbok Myeongwan Gangnam is a Hong Kong-style dim sum and beef knife-cut noodle restaurant a 3-minute walk from Gangnam Station Exit 1 in Seoul. Visiting alone, the writer ordered beef knife-cut noodles for 11,000 won and shumai for 9,800 won, and found the hand-pulled noodles thick but pleasantly chewy and the mala-leaning broth mild enough for people who avoid spicy food. With every dish under 11,000 won, single seats and hours until 22:20, Sinbok Myeongwan works well for a solo meal or a late dinner after overtime.
