This is Yoon-maknae, thinking about tomorrow's lunch on the way home from work. Weekends are precious time to shake off the stress of the workweek. When you make plans with friends around Sindorim or Guro Station, it can be hard to decide where to go and what to eat — especially if someone's driving, in which case a place with parking becomes the first priority. So I visited The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch, a Guro Station spot where you can park comfortably underground and eat great spicy grilled jokbal and bossam, and wrote up my review.

Where is The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch, and its hours and parking

What the restaurant looks like inside and out

The restaurant is on the ground floor, so it was easy to find. Walking in, the atmosphere felt clean and airy, with nothing heavy about it.

The interior isn't huge, but it's tidy and well organized. One section is walled off, which would work well for a company dinner or a group gathering.

The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch menu and prices

You order from a tablet at the table, and there's a wide range on offer — jokbal, bossam, buckwheat noodles, sides, and a separate lunch menu.

  • Front leg ₩47,000
  • Back leg ₩42,000
  • Spicy grilled jokbal ₩47,000 / ₩38,000
  • Cold jokbal ₩47,000 / ₩34,000

Since we wanted something spicy along with bossam, we chose the A set — which comes with spicy grilled jokbal and bossam — plus a small buckwheat noodle platter. For context, The Jokbal's food is reinterpreted hotel-style by a chef with 30 years of experience at the Westin Chosun Hotel, and the restaurant has been running steadily for 16 years since it opened in 2012.

The lunch menu offers good-value set meals — pork stir-fry, soft tofu stew, bossam, and rice soup — which makes it a solid choice for a lunchtime visit too.

This is footage I took while eating the A set and the buckwheat noodles. I usually order jokbal and noodles for delivery, but eating them fresh at the restaurant meant the noodles hadn't gone stiff, and everything tasted much better.

The A set (spicy grilled jokbal and bossam) with a small buckwheat noodle platter

Our order arrived — spicy grilled jokbal, tender bossam, and the buckwheat noodles that are practically mandatory with jokbal. The restaurant sticks to a principle of receiving domestic grade-2 raw trotters daily, boiling them the same day, and selling them the same day, and the shine on the meat really showed it.

The spicy grilled jokbal came with rice cakes and chili peppers on the side, looking spicy just from the sight of it, while the bossam looked wonderfully soft.

The bossam tastes even better eaten with the kimchi that comes alongside it. I personally thought the kimchi was well balanced — not too spicy and not too bland — so it suited my taste.

There was also a cold bean sprout soup served to cool your mouth down between spicy bites, and it paired really well with the spicy sauce.

Then the buckwheat noodle platter arrived. Eating it fresh at the restaurant, without the noodles having gone stiff, was very satisfying.

The chewy noodles worked great with the spicy sauce, and there were plenty of fresh vegetables mixed in.

The complimentary cold jokbal starter

This cold jokbal came out as a little taste on the house, and since it was an unexpected extra, it was a nice surprise.

The sharp kick of mustard woke up my palate, and the sweet-and-sour finish rounded it off smoothly. Because the jokbal was served cold, it had a chewier, springier texture than usual.

How spicy is the grilled jokbal at The Jokbal?

I wanted something spicy, so I started with the jokbal. The moment it hit my mouth, a pleasant smoky, grilled aroma spread out, followed by a spiciness that got my appetite going. There was no gamey smell at all — the skin was chewy and the meat wasn't dry, the kind of thing that keeps your chopsticks going back for more.

I tried the bossam together with the buckwheat noodles, and the savory juiciness of the bossam paired well with the crunch of the kimchi.

The bossam was tasty, but the spicy jokbal suited my taste more — it was spicier than I expected.

When it got too spicy, the cold bean sprout soup came to the rescue.

I also ate some of the chewy, soft rice cakes along the way.

The bossam was definitely more satisfying eaten with vegetables and buckwheat noodles than on its own — the flavors felt more layered that way.

The spicy jokbal was genuinely spicy enough to melt away stress, which made me think it's a great choice when you want to unwind on a weekend.

Final verdict on The Jokbal Sindorim Main Branch

This is a place where you can easily park or reach by public transit, and enjoy chewy jokbal and bossam carrying the skill of a hotel chef. A good place to visit when you want to heal with meat.
