I went to 'Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch,' a raw fish restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Busan. Hours are 14:00–01:00, closed every Wednesday.
Looking for a good value, fresh raw fish spot near Gyeongseongdae, Pukyong National University, or Daeyeon-dong where you can happily sip a soju or two?

Today I'm sharing an honest review of 'Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch,' a Nam-gu, Busan restaurant that's winning over everyone from college students to office workers, couples on dates, and families out for dinner — with the best seasonal seafood of each season plus a table-breaking spread of side dishes and freebies!

Inside Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch: drinks with the baseball game on
Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch is right near Gyeongseongdae/Pukyong National University Station, so it's a cozy yet lively spot perfect for dropping in with friends after work or class. Nice touch: they put baseball games on the big TV in the restaurant!
Sipping cold soju with good sashimi while watching a baseball game is genuinely fun. It was the perfect place for Gyeongseongdae/Pukyong sports fans to gather and casually cheer on their team!

"All of this is just the side dishes?" The banchan spread at Sintongyeong
Not long after we ordered, the side dishes started coming out at Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch — and they just kept coming, my jaw genuinely dropped. The table was already full before the main sashimi even arrived, which pretty much forces you to pick up your soju glass!

Main side dishes: japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), fresh clams, clean white kimchi, quail eggs, salty whelk, refreshing palate-cleansing green grapes, seasoned pickled radish, and sweet crispy candied sweet potato

Hot special dishes: appetite-boosting braised fish in seasoned sauce, freshly pan-fried crispy chive pancake, corn cheese (a must at any raw fish restaurant), and two servings of sushi rice for DIY sushi plus fresh leafy greens for wraps
None of the side dishes felt like an afterthought — every single one was so good it worked as a proper soju snack even before the sashimi showed up.

Autumn gizzard shad sashimi, filleted completely boneless on request
Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch's gizzard shad sashimi (small) is ₩40,000, and soju is ₩4,500 a bottle. When it comes to autumn's signature delicacy, gizzard shad is the clear winner! Since Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch fillets the live fish the moment you order, the freshness was on another level.
The gizzard shad sashimi comes with thin, finely julienned perilla leaf, and honestly, scooping up a big spoonful and stuffing your mouth beats the whole delicate-chopstick-picking approach every time!
The more you chew, the more that crunchy texture and nutty flavor of the gizzard shad comes through — I couldn't help but let out a little groan 😭 By the way, we're not fans of bones, so we asked for it to be filleted completely boneless, haha.

3 tips for eating gizzard shad sashimi
- The classic wrap: pile fresh lettuce and perilla leaf with gizzard shad sashimi, chili, and garlic, then eat it all in one wrap!
- DIY gizzard shad sushi: gently place the nutty sashimi on top of the sushi rice that comes as a side dish!
- The big spoonful: scoop up a heaping spoonful of julienned perilla and gizzard shad sashimi together to taste the full, unadulterated nutty flavor!

Free assorted fried snacks and spicy fish-bone soup to finish
At Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch, ordering sashimi comes with free assorted fried snacks and free bone spicy soup. Just as we were deep into enjoying the gizzard shad sashimi, the fried snacks arrived as a service treat!
Sweet fried sweet potato, crispy fried perilla leaf, and nutty fried crab all came out freshly fried, crispy outside and moist inside — a perfect drinking snack. And once you've finished the sashimi, of course you finish with spicy soup, right? (Just ask a staff member and they'll prepare it right away.)

The bone spicy soup, bubbling away on the burner, had a rich, spicy broth that instantly cut through the slight heaviness after eating raw fish. Add a bowl of rice and you've got the perfect full-course meal! There was a wait that day, so we sadly skipped the rice and left ㅠㅠ
