Daegu Korean restaurant for bossam rice bowls: Uldong Bossam

In short

Uldong Bossam is a Korean restaurant in Jung-gu, Daegu, serving bossam set meals and bossam rice bowls. I paired freshly ground sesame-soy sauce with the bossam and had doenjang-jjigae with both sets. Verdict: a filling, easygoing bossam meal in a neat setting.

I was craving bossam (boiled pork wraps) in Daegu, so after looking around, I visited Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈).

The restaurant had an overall clean, tidy feel. When I think of a bossam restaurant, I somehow picture somewhere relaxed and a little old-fashioned, but this felt more like a neat, modern restaurant, making it nice for a casual meal.

There were little decorative pieces with an East Asian feel placed around the space, too. It looked like a decent spot to visit when you want to have a meal with a friend or quickly sort out a meal around Gyodong or Dongseong-ro.

Ordering the bossam set and bossam rice-bowl set

Looking at the menu, there were options to enjoy bossam on its own, as well as individual meals like the bossam set and bossam rice-bowl set! Unusually, they also had a lot of whiskey options!! This would be heaven for whiskey lovers. We ordered the bossam set and the bossam rice-bowl set.

Freshly ground sesame seeds with the bossam set

First up, the bossam set! It came with bossam, rice, side dishes, and doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew), so it was nice to have everything laid out as a full meal. What I remembered most from this set was the whole sesame seeds.

You grind the whole sesame seeds yourself. Grinding them right at the table released such a nutty aroma, and it was quietly fun. I added soy sauce to the ground sesame seeds to make sesame soy sauce and ate it with the bossam; the nutty sesame and soy sauce went together nicely as a pairing for the pork.

The bossam rice bowl already has seasoning mixed into the rice, so try it as it is first.

Bossam rice bowl with added seasoning

If it feels like it needs more, you can add the separately provided seasoning. Sesame oil comes separately too, so you can add that to suit your taste. The bossam rice-bowl set also comes with doenjang-jjigae. Having the stew with the rice bowl made it feel like a properly satisfying meal.

Both meals are based on the same bossam, but the ways of eating them are different, so I think you can choose according to what you feel like that day. Uldong Bossam was a place where I could comfortably enjoy bossam as a meal in a clean setting. Above all, both meals came with doenjang-jjigae, so I liked that I could have a filling meal without ordering stew separately.
