Signature photo of gabrisal bossam at Bossam Ae Kalguksu

On a day I was craving soft, tender bossam (boiled pork wrap), I headed to Bossam Ae Kalguksu, a Seongnam restaurant known for bossam made with gabrisal (pork shoulder blade meat). Order the gabrisal bossam and you get two servings of kalguksu thrown in for free, so you can enjoy both bossam and hot noodle soup together. With the soft bossam plus kalguksu on the side, it made for a hearty, satisfying meal.

Where is Bossam Ae Kalguksu, and where do you park?

Exterior of Bossam Ae Kalguksu Seongnam Sangdaewon Branch on the main road

Bossam Ae Kalguksu sits right on the main road along Geumsang-ro in Sangdaewon-dong, Seongnam, so it's easy to find and hard to miss. The big sign out front reading 'Bossam set for just ₩10,000, free kalguksu with bossam' caught my eye right away haha. For parking, there's a public lot nearby — the closest is the Sangdaewon 3-dong public parking lot, handy if you're driving over.

Waitlist sheet at the entrance and meat boiling time notice

There's a waitlist sign-up sheet at the entrance, but since we came right at opening, there was no wait yet. The meat is boiled three times a day — at 11:00, 15:00, and 19:00 — so timing your visit around those hours means you'll get freshly boiled, hot and tender bossam!

The interior has tables ranging from 4-seaters to 8-seaters, plus window counter seats that are great for solo dining. Lots of people eat alone these days, and at this Seongnam restaurant you can get a solo bossam set for ₩10,000, which looked like a solid, filling meal even on your own.

Restaurant tables filling up with customers

We were the first ones in at opening, but customers kept streaming in while we ate. Watching the tables fill up one by one, it's clear this is a popular spot among locals in Sangdaewon-dong.

What we ordered: small gabrisal bossam, 37,000 won for two

Notice for a free drink with review event

Ordering is simple via the tablet at the table, and there's currently an event where leaving a review gets you a free canned drink. I ordered the small gabrisal bossam set. Since kalguksu comes along automatically with any bossam order, you get to enjoy both in one go — the value for money felt pretty great.

Salted shrimp, ssamjang (dipping sauce), garlic, and chili peppers come out with green onion kimchi and geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) as standard table settings.

If you run out of anything, there's a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to as much as you like. Rice is also free if you order per number of diners, so there's no worry about running short — plenty of bossam and rice to go around.

The free kalguksu: two servings with every bossam order

The complimentary kalguksu at Bossam Ae Kalguksu is cooked right at your table. Once the broth starts bubbling, all the kalguksu ingredients go in at once. No need to prep or add anything separately — just drop it all in and wait comfortably while it simmers away.

What does the gabrisal bossam taste like?

The long-awaited gabrisal bossam finally arrived. Being gabrisal, it has a slightly richer, more tender texture.

Bossam served with cabbage, bossam kimchi, and radish

Napa cabbage, bossam kimchi, and radish all come alongside, so you can mix and match to your taste — I tried the meat on cabbage with bossam kimchi, and also with radish, playing around with different combinations.

Always start with the original — no gamey smell, just savory gabrisal. Then I added some salted shrimp on top for extra depth of flavor.

The best pairing: gabrisal bossam with green onion kimchi

Cabbage with garlic, chili, and ssamjang plus bossam kimchi is a great combo too. But my top pick is the green onion kimchi — its sharp, tangy flavor cuts through the richness of the gabrisal, so the meat never feels greasy and stays delicious to the last bite.

A bowl of the free kalguksu cooked to perfection

While eating the bossam, the kalguksu simmered to just the right doneness — the noodles slid down easily and the broth was incredible. Warming the gabrisal briefly in the kalguksu broth was a nice way to enjoy the meat hot again. After finishing the kalguksu, I bet adding an egg and stir-frying it into fried rice would be delicious too. I wanted to try the fried rice, but I was already too full — that's where I stopped!

Is Bossam Ae Kalguksu in Sangdaewon-dong worth a visit?

Gabrisal is a special cut that only yields about a handful per pig, and the bossam made from it was tender and savory. Best of all, ordering bossam gets you kalguksu too, making it a genuinely filling meal. With options ranging from a solo bossam set to larger portions, this place works well for solo diners and family meals alike. It also seemed like a good pick for office lunches or team dinners near Seongnam Hi-Tech Valley. Bossam is available for takeout too, so it's handy when you want to eat comfortably at home. If you want to enjoy gabrisal bossam with hot kalguksu together, I recommend Bossam Ae Kalguksu, a bossam restaurant in Sangdaewon-dong.
