Whenever there's a family meal on the calendar, picking the right spot is oddly tricky. You want somewhere that works for kids and adults alike, serves clean, well-put-together food, and lets everyone sit comfortably and actually talk.

This time I went to Eomma-ui Ttuksim in Paju. It's a place where you can eat Korean set-meal style, so I figured it'd be a solid regular spot for family visits — and after eating there, I got why it's such a popular choice for Paju family gatherings.

What comes with the Ttuksim Jjukkumi Rice Table?

After a lot of back-and-forth over the menu, we landed on the Ttuksim Jjukkumi Rice Table. Should we try this, or that? — we finally decided.

As the name suggests, it's jjukkumi (small octopus) served with rice, but it also comes with pork bulgogi, so you get to try two dishes at once.

The jjukkumi came in a spicy sauce that really wakes up your appetite. Once you start eating the spicy octopus with rice, your chopsticks just keep going back for more.

But it's not just jjukkumi on repeat — you can alternate with the pork bulgogi in between, and the combination worked really well. Going back and forth between the spicy octopus and the sweet-salty pork bulgogi, a bowl of rice disappears fast.

Doenjang or cheonggukjang? Picking the stew at Eomma-ui Ttuksim

With the rice table at Eomma-ui Ttuksim, you can choose between doenjang (soybean paste) stew or cheonggukjang (fermented soybean) stew. Looking around, I noticed a lot of people ordering cheonggukjang, so I thought, that's the one — and went with it. It has that distinct nutty, savory cheonggukjang flavor that pairs really well with the spicy jjukkumi.

Taking a spoonful of cheonggukjang between bites of jjukkumi, or mixing a bit of the broth into rice, worked nicely too. Personally, I think that at a Korean set-meal restaurant, the stew and side dishes matter just as much as the main dish — and at Eomma-ui Ttuksim, even the side dishes were good, one by one.

When the table arrived, the first thing that caught my eye was the variety of side dishes. At a lot of Korean set-meal restaurants, there are plenty of side dishes but only a few you actually reach for. Here, though, none of the side dishes were over-seasoned, and they all went well with rice.

Since the main jjukkumi dish leans spicy, pairing it with milder side dishes made for a good balance. Taking small portions of the pork bulgogi, cheonggukjang, and various side dishes, the whole table felt satisfyingly full.

Why Eomma-ui Ttuksim works for a family or group meal in Paju

For a Paju family gathering, choosing a menu is always tricky since everyone's tastes differ. At Eomma-ui Ttuksim, you can have spicy jjukkumi and pork bulgogi together, plus side dishes and stew, so there's enough variety for different preferences.

Especially for a larger Paju group gathering, ordering several different menus to share would work well. This time we visited as two and had the Ttuksim Jjukkumi Rice Table, but next time I'd like to come with family and try other menu items too.
