Ulsan rice cake shop sold out by noon, pumpkin milk: Baekho Tteokbang

Today, before heading to my parents' place, I stopped by Baekho Tteokbang (백호떡방), a rice cake shop in Nam-gu, Ulsan, to pick up some rice cakes for my mom and dad, who love them!

Baekho Tteokbang is on the 1st floor at 223 Beonyeong-ro, Nam-gu, Ulsan, open from 9am to 5pm. For parking, I just pulled over on the roadside with my hazard lights on for a bit! (The customer behind me did the same thing, haha.)

With Chuseok (Korean thanksgiving) coming up, they were doing traditional bojagi cloth wrapping too~ There were rows of products already displayed for customers who'd reserved ahead, and I kind of wished I had reserved too, ugh.

Noon on a weekend: only black sesame and mugwort hoddeok left

I visited Baekho Tteokbang around noon on a weekend, and some rice cakes were already sold out due to reservations, ugh. Still, two kinds were left — black sesame hoddeok (black sesame pumpkin injeolmi) and mugwort hoddeok (mugwort castella pumpkin injeolmi) — so I quickly grabbed one of each!

Drinks at Baekho Tteokbang: baekho tea, pumpkin milk and pumpkin sikhye

Baekho Tteokbang also sold individually packaged baekho tea, plus pumpkin milk and pumpkin sikhye (sweet rice punch)! I thought about getting the pumpkin sikhye, but since I have that fairly often anyway, I decided to try the pumpkin milk instead, which I don't usually get~

They packed everything into a clean paper bag~ I thought it would make a perfect gift just as it was~

They included Baekho Tteokbang's info sheet too! There were 4 kinds of rice cake in total — baekho tteok, black sesame hoddeok, mugwort hoddeok, and gureum tteok — each available in small, medium, and large sizes~ I figured next time I'd try the small size of each kind first, then order whichever I liked best in medium or large! (Next time, I'm definitely reserving ahead!!)

They also had a Baekho gift set! It comes with rice cake and a handmade drink, priced at ₩6,500! Isn't that pretty great!? There are actually a lot of occasions where you need to give out return gifts — first birthday parties, wedding favors, or after a funeral — and I thought the set composition and price were really solid~ Check the rest of the details and prices below~

What does black sesame hoddeok taste like? Nutty sesame over soft pumpkin injeolmi

Here are the rice cakes I brought home from Baekho Tteokbang~~ The two colors look similar but the flavors are definitely different~ haha

The black sesame hoddeok from Baekho Tteokbang! This is the one my mom and I really loved! Black sesame powder is dusted on top of the pumpkin injeolmi rice cake, and it's nutty with a sweet edge too, so good! And the base pumpkin rice cake at Baekho Tteokbang is so soft and chewy!!! Really enjoyed this one~~

What does mugwort hoddeok taste like? Mild enough even if you dislike mugwort

The mugwort hoddeok from Baekho Tteokbang! While the black sesame version had a bit of texture from the ground sesame, the mugwort hoddeok has mugwort castella powder dusted over the pumpkin injeolmi, giving it a mild mugwort aroma and a soft texture!! The flavor isn't too strong, so I think even people who don't love mugwort could enjoy it! My dad loved it, saying he liked the mugwort scent, haha.

Pumpkin milk, and why Baekho Tteokbang works as a holiday gift

I finished up with Baekho Tteokbang's pumpkin milk~ It had a really rich pumpkin flavor! The sweetness wasn't too strong, so my parents loved it! If you're looking for a mild, wholesome-tasting milk, I'd recommend this~~ (It also tasted good mixed with a little regular milk!)
