14-day aged pork belly with easy parking at a Yangju BBQ spot: Mat

In short

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is an aged-pork Korean barbecue restaurant in the busy Ogjeong area of Yangju, Gyeonggi. The pork belly, chilled and aged for 336 hours, was grilled tableside by staff and came out crisp outside, juicy inside, with no gamey smell, and the side dishes and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) paired well with the meat. Easy on-site parking was a real plus for anyone driving in.

Today I'm posting about my visit to Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch, already famous in Ogjeong as a pork belly restaurant.

A barbecue spot with easy parking on the Ogjeong main street

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is located at 74 Ogjeongdong-ro 7da-gil, Yangju, Gyeonggi, right in the Ogjeong main street area~!

Parking around this area can be surprisingly tricky, and lots are sometimes full, but this place has proper parking facilities so it was easy to bring the car!! Not stressing about parking when you're going out for barbecue is actually a pretty big deal haha.

The exterior already gives off that good-restaurant vibe haha. Going inside, the place was bigger and cleaner than I expected. Barbecue restaurants can feel a bit stuffy because of smoke and smell, but this place had good ventilation, not much smoke, and an overall pleasant feel.

Spacious, clean interior hall of the barbecue restaurant

The spacing between tables was decent too, so I could eat comfortably without worrying about the next table.

A simple menu centered on aged pork

Looking at the menu, the meat options were fairly simple but covered a good range of aged pork cuts — pork belly, pork neck, five-layer pork, jowl meat, gabrisal and more. I went with the pork belly.

336 hours, 14 days of aging

Mat Chandeul's biggest feature is definitely the aged meat. Domestic pork chilled-aged for over 336 hours — a whopping 14 days — really shows the care put into the meat~! I also liked that they use domestic chilled pork haha.

They also sell freshly made stone-pot rice and aged kimchi hot pot. It looked like it would go really well with the meat, so I'll definitely have to order that next time!!

What about the side dishes?

The basic side dishes that came out paired perfectly with the meat. It wasn't an over-the-top spread of everything — just dishes that complemented the meat without overpowering it. What was really delicious was the aged kimchi and pickled chili peppers, plus the salted pollock roe and wild garlic — everything else was tasty too! Turns out they use house-made pickles for their side dishes, and they even blend over 20 ingredients to make their own sun-dried salt...?!

Pork belly grilled by the staff themselves

The pork belly finally arrived! Even the raw meat looked glossy and great. On top of that, having the staff grill it for me was so convenient. No greasy hands from grilling, and since they cooked it perfectly, all I had to do was eat haha. They even told me the exact gram weight right away, so you know you can trust it!

The well-grilled pork belly was crispy outside and juicy inside, exactly that crisp-outside-juicy-inside texture~!!! Full of juice, tender yet chewy — so delicious haha.

Best of all, there was no gamey pork smell at all, which made it even more satisfying. I could see why it's known as a top pork belly spot in Ogjeong.

The doenjang jjigae was hearty and tasty too haha.

The staff were really kind too. Not only did they grill the meat for me, they also told me which side dishes tasted best with what, so even as a first-time visitor I could eat comfortably haha.

Lunch special and group dining

For reference, there's a lunch special from 12pm to 5pm. With a meat order, they give you stone-pot rice for two plus doenjang jjigae for ₩10,000 — such a good deal, right? haha. Worth keeping in mind if you're visiting during lunch hours!

With close to 100 seats in the restaurant, it also looked like a good spot for large group gatherings, company dinners, or family meals.
