Minari gomtang rice soup for a light meal near Wangsimni Station
In short
Geumnyeong Gomtang is a gomtang (Korean beef bone soup) restaurant on Wangsimnyro20-gil near Wangsimni Station in Seongdong, Seoul. Instead of the regular gomtang, the writer ordered minari gomtang, dipping fragrant minari (water dropwort) and meat in soy sauce and mixing rice straight into the broth for a full meal with no side dishes needed. It's a mild, non-spicy gomtang spot that works well for hangover recovery or a meal with parents.

On chilly days, or on days when I just crave warm broth for no reason, gomtang (milky beef bone soup) always comes to mind. This time I went to Geumnyeong Gomtang, a well-known spot near Wangsimni Station. I found it while looking for somewhere to eat in Wangsimni, and it turned out to be a great place for a clean but filling meal.
What I ordered was minari gomtang~~ I was going to get the regular gomtang, but since I love minari (water dropwort), I went with that instead!

A soup dish that's welcome on a Wangsimni day
Gomtang isn't a spicy or bold dish, but oddly, once you start eating it, it has this way of settling your stomach. Especially when I'm out shopping or meeting someone in Wangsimni and looking for a place to eat, a soup dish like this is quietly welcome.
The menu at Geumnyeong Gomtang is fairly simple, which makes it a good choice for lunch, and it also seemed like a solid option when you want a hearty dinner.
That day I ordered minari gomtang without much hesitation. When the piping hot ttukbaegi (stone pot) arrived, the broth was piled generously with minari, so the look of it was already a bit different from a regular gomtang.

How the minari gomtang tasted
The charm of minari gomtang really is the fragrant minari. The typically mild, deep gomtang broth got a fresher lift from the minari's aroma, and the overall flavor felt lighter. I worried the minari might overpower everything, but it blended in with the broth more naturally than I expected.
Eating the meat and minari together was delicious, and mixing rice into the broth spoonful by spoonful worked just as well. The meat was also great dipped in the soy sauce — chef's kiss.
Personally, with gomtang I sometimes find the flavor gets a bit plain halfway through, but thanks to the minari, I never got tired of it until the last spoonful. The broth was hot enough that eating it on a cold day warmed me from the inside out.

A mild broth made for mixing with rice
The happiest moment with gomtang has to be mixing in the rice. With a little meat and minari on top and hot broth mixed with rice, it felt like a complete meal even without any side dishes.
The broth isn't overpowering, so it seems easy on the stomach for breakfast or lunch too, and it would also work well as a hangover-recovery meal. Seems like a good place to bring your parents as well.
Lately I find myself craving clean, warm soup dishes like this more than heavily seasoned food, and this one hit exactly the right note for me that day.

A straightforward Korean meal near Wangsimni
There are so many restaurants around Wangsimni Station that the options can feel endless, but sometimes what you want isn't anything fancy — just a solid, no-frills dish. The minari gomtang at Geumnyeong Gomtang was a great fit for that kind of day.
If you like minari especially, it's worth ordering at least once, since it offers a completely different feel from the regular gomtang. Personally, I was very satisfied getting both the plainness of the gomtang itself and the fresh aroma of the minari in one bowl.

Why I want to go back again
This time I just had the minari gomtang, but it was better than I expected, so now I'm curious about the other menu items too. It's a good spot to visit whenever you're looking for a lunch option in Wangsimni or craving a warm bowl of soup in the evening. They also serve pho, which looked like it would be tasty.
It also seems like a good choice when you want something light on the stomach instead of heavy or spicy food. Especially on days like these when you crave something warm, a bowl of gomtang bubbling away in a stone pot feels extra welcome.
I visited Geumnyeong Gomtang after getting curious about minari gomtang while looking for good food near Wangsimni Station. The mild gomtang broth combined with fragrant minari made for something a little different yet easy and enjoyable to eat. If you ever find yourself craving a hearty, warm meal in Wangsimni, this is a place worth remembering. Next time I'll have to try the other menu items too. 🥣🌿
