Nampo-dong udon set and salmon-halibut sushi: Moshi Moshi Sushi

Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok is a Japanese restaurant on the 10th floor of the main building at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok in Jung-gu, Busan. Over a Friday lunch the writer and her husband ordered the udon set for 18,500 won and the 10-piece salmon and halibut sushi for 27,500 won, then added five more pieces of halibut sushi, and the meal came with three kinds of tempura, soft tofu, vegetable salad and broth. With baby chairs and solo counter seats both on hand, Moshi Moshi Sushi works just as well for a meal out with a baby as for a quick lunch alone.

Haeundae bakery café outdoor seats after a beach run: Low & Sweet

No-signboard Gwangalli pizza restaurant for a late lunch: Extra Mile

Extra Mile is a Western-style restaurant on Suyeongro554beon-gagil in Suyeong, Busan, one alley back from the main strip at Gwangalli Beach. Extra Mile has no signboard, yet tables stayed full through the late lunch hour, and the Classic Combo set brought white ragu pasta with a half pepperoni, half salad pizza. With sunlight through the floor-to-ceiling windows and an open kitchen in view, Extra Mile is an easy recommendation for a Gwangalli date meal.

Sushi restaurant in Dongnae, Busan with no 6pm wait: Moshi Moshi

Moshi Moshi Sushi, Lotte Department Store Dongnae Branch is a Japanese restaurant on the 8th floor of Lotte Department Store in Dongnae-gu, Busan. A couple finished their weekend shopping, arrived at 6pm, were seated with no wait, and ordered the hoe hansang sashimi-and-sushi set with udon plus a bowl of Japanese-style ramen, then added more sushi à la carte. The long, thick slices of raw fish and a ramen bowl big enough to pass for a jumbo size made Moshi Moshi Sushi worth a return visit.

Busan Korean restaurant, evening Naver reservation: Songjeongok

Songjeongok Songjeong Main Branch is an abalone pot rice restaurant on Songjeong Gwanggeogol-ro in Haeundae, Busan. After a walk at Songjeong Beach, we came for dinner and ordered the abalone pot rice set for two (38,000 won), where the side dishes were mild rather than sharp and the gabrisal suyuk (boiled pork collar) and doenjang stew made it a filling meal. Evenings fill up at Songjeongok, so book on Naver before you go.

Raw shrimp and soju for two at a Busanjin sashimi bar: Rigo Susan

Rigo Susan Jeonpo Station Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant specializing in aged live fish, on Jeonpodae-ro 216beon-gil in Busanjin, Busan. On a weekend evening a married couple ordered the 49,000-won raw shrimp sashimi, where staff pull the heads off the live shrimp at the table, and finished the fried shrimp heads plus a full side-dish spread of tteokbokki, sushi and sundae with three bottles of soju. The raw shrimp was good enough that the couple plans to return for the aged live-fish sashimi platter.

Haeundae Chinese restaurant with sauce poured over the pork: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Haeundae Branch is a European-styled Chinese restaurant on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae, Busan. A couple stopped in for lunch and ordered black vinegar sirloin sweet and sour pork for 28,000 won, beef belly jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for 12,000 won, and poached-egg pork belly jjajang for 10,000 won, with the sweet and sour pork brought out sauce-poured but some crispy pieces left plain. With its old-world atmosphere, Bueokgan Chinese suits family gatherings and couples alike.

Songjeong café with an injeolmi skewer dessert box: Suwolgyeonghwa

Suwolgyeonghwa is a hanok-style ocean-view tea café on the 4th floor of a building in Songjeong, Busan, a one-minute walk from Songjeong Beach and right on the beach train route. Of the 5 desserts in the signature Dalbodeure Box (13,000 won), the injeolmi (sweet rice cake) skewer was the best, served alongside Jeju Breeze tea and Miguksik Gabae, the café's Americano, with the sea in view. Because the traditional desserts at Suwolgyeonghwa are not very sweet, it is also an easy place to bring parents.

Haeundae restaurant with two kids: poached egg carbonara set, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Haeundae Branch is a European restaurant on the second floor of a building on Dalmaji-gil in Haeundae, Busan. Two moms and their 5-year-olds shared the couple's dish set of pumpkin soup, garden salad, carbonara, pepperoni pizza and a drink; the kids happily ate the carbonara once the poached egg was broken and stirred in, but found the pepperoni pizza a little spicy. Kids' tableware and a high chair arrive right away in this YES Kids Zone, which makes Bueokgan an easy choice for eating out with children.

Saturday lunch tonkatsu split in Jeonpo, Busan: Hets Jeonpo Branch

Hets Jeonpo Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jeonpo Station in Busanjin, Busan. On a Saturday at 12:30 pm the writer waited 10 minutes through CatchTable, then ordered one YBD sang loin katsu and one YBD hire katsu (tenderloin cutlet) with a friend and split three pieces each, and asked for a refill of the corn dressing served with the cabbage salad. The U-shaped bar counter at Hets Jeonpo Branch makes solo dining easy, and the hire katsu was the best the writer has had in the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam area.

Gijang outlet restaurant by the UGG store with no queue: Bueokgan

Bueokgan Restaurant, Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets is a Western restaurant at the very back of the North zone of the Gijang Shinsegae Outlets in Busan, past the UGG store and on the left. Arriving after the weekend lunch peak, the writer ordered sweet pumpkin soup, napa cabbage Caesar salad, abalone cream risotto and basil margherita, and found the baby chairs, kids' tableware and diaper-changing tables in both restrooms ideal for a family meal. Bueokgan is a solid outlet lunch stop, but the weekend wait is long and there is no set queue system, which makes it confusing.

Marine City Chinese weekend lunch: seafood jjamppong, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is an authentic Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor above Subyeon Choego Pork Gukbap on Marine City 3-ro in Haeundae, Busan. At a window seat with an ocean view on a weekend lunch, the paihuanggua (smashed cucumber salad), abalone shrimp fried rice, seafood jjamppong and BUUK jajangmyeon all arrived at once, and the seafood- and vegetable-packed jjamppong broth was the standout. Even a four-year-old niece ate well, so Bueokgan Chinese is an easy pick for a family meal out.
