Suji jokbal restaurant big enough for teen sons: Cheongdam Jokbal

Cheongdam Jokbal Gwanggyo Sanghyeon Branch is a jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork with wraps) restaurant in Suji-gu, Yongin, 147m from Sanghyeon Station Exit 2. A mother and her two growing sons ordered the large set menu of soft bossam and warm jokbal for 55,000 won, still had room, and added a medium jokbal for 45,000 won, with free makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) and a salt-grilled pork service on top. Cheongdam Jokbal is worth remembering for jokbal served warm with no gamey smell and unusually generous portions.

Dongtan Station kids-room restaurant, 55,600 won for four: Pyeonbaek

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch is an all-you-can-eat hinoki steam and shabu-shabu restaurant on the 2nd floor of Grand Via Star by Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, with a kids room and baby chairs for families. On a weekday evening, 2 adults (19,900 won each) and 2 preschoolers (7,900 won each) paid 55,600 won in total and worked through two rounds of hinoki steam plus shabu-shabu, fresh spring rolls, kalguksu noodles and porridge. With the children slipping off to the kids room between bites, the 100-minute limit at Pyeonbaek Hoegwan went by fast.

Yongin kalguksu restaurant near Dongcheon Botanical Garden: Yun Ujae

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is a shabu-kalguksu (hot pot with knife-cut noodles) restaurant that makes its own noodles, on Gogi-ro near Dongcheon-dong in Suji, Yongin, Gyeonggi. On a weekend lunch before a trip to Dongcheon Natural Botanical Garden with a child, the writer ordered the white broth for two at 11,500 won per person and seafood pajeon (savory pancake) at 16,000 won, a set that came with flat kalguksu, regular kalguksu and fried rice at the end. For two adults and one child the pajeon made it too much food, so Yun Ujae is best ordered this way by groups of three or more.

Terrace lunch with egg tart at Eggroom, an Anyang brunch café

Eggroom is a brunch and pasta café in Dongpyeon-maeul, Anyang, Gyeonggi, with wood tables on an outdoor terrace. Arriving just before noon, the writer took a terrace table for an iced americano, Egg Benedict (15,000 won for 2 pieces), scallop oil pasta (19,000 won) and an egg tart, and every seat inside and out filled up minutes later. For brunch outdoors in early-autumn weather, the terrace at Eggroom is worth arriving early for.

Suwon date course dinner with carrot purée sous vide steak: Hado

Hado is a casual course-dining restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. A couple of 10 years came on a date for the Hado Basic Course at 45,000 won per person, eating through pea tart, sweet shrimp apple tart, two bisque pastas, chicken breast sous vide steak with carrot purée, and Earl Grey ice cream over about an hour. With a relaxed rather than formal mood and a CD player on the table, Hado suits couples who want a course meal without the fuss.

Bucheon Korean restaurant, ₩44,000 set meal for two: Gim Myeongju

Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Bucheon Main Branch is a Korean set-meal restaurant near Gachiul Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, built around pot rice and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew). A couple visiting early on a weekday ordered the tteuranchae bapsang set for two with a charcoal-grilled pork add-on for ₩44,000 and got more than 10 banchan (side dishes), cheonggukjang and hwangmi-rice pot rice, refilling doraji-muchim (seasoned bellflower root), spinach namul and braised potatoes at the banchan self-bar. Banchan and cheonggukjang are also sold to go at ₩5,000 a pack, making Gim Myeongju an easy choice for a meal with parents.

Hanam Misa Chinese restaurant with donchimi refills: O Hyeongje

O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang Hanam Misa Main Branch is a stone-pot nurungjitang (scorched rice soup) Chinese restaurant on Misa-daero in Hanam, Gyeonggi. Arriving right at opening on a weekday, the writer took a window seat for seafood nurungjitang and the mini tangsuyuk set with glutinous rice tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and refilled donchimi (radish water kimchi) several times from the 8-dish self-serve bar. The seafood tasted fresh and free parking for about 30 cars makes O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang worth another family meal.

Suwon Station LP café for a blind date: decaf Americano at Hongrad

Hongrad Suwon Station Branch is an American-style LP café on the second floor inside the Suwon Station shopping street in Suwon, Gyeonggi. First visited for a blind date, the writer returned for a decaf Americano at 5,500 won, Basque cheesecake at 7,500 won and the Hongrad Brownie at 7,500 won, and received a cat badge called Ku for writing a Naver receipt review. For anyone looking for a blind date or date spot in Suwon, the brownie with ice cream at Hongrad is the one to order.

Namyangju pork belly with gim and pickled radish wraps: 2002 Witch's

2002 Witch's Arpeggio is a tomato-jang pork belly restaurant with creekside outdoor seating in Wabu-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi. On a weekday half-day off, the order came to 70,000 won in total: tomato-jang pork belly for two at 40,000 won, the Witch's crispy-outside, chewy-inside potato pancake at 25,000 won and a 5,000-won cheese add-on, and of all the wrap combinations, gim (dried seaweed) with pickled radish was the favourite. The potato pancake filled everyone up, so the cauldron fried rice had to wait for next time — an unusual Namyangju date course.

Baedagol Bakery House is a three-story garden bakery café on Hoguk-ro 1121beon-gil in Deokyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. After a meal, I stopped by with a friend for an iced Americano with walnut bread, hazelnut ambutter (a red bean and butter bun) and pandoro, then looked around the rooftop benches and the sand play area. With parking lots 2 and 3 on top of the main lot, Baedagol Bakery House is an easy place to slow down surrounded by greenery.

Solo lunch at a Paju ssambap restaurant with grilled atka mackerel

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap is a ssambap (wrap-rice) Korean set-meal restaurant in the Simhaksan food village in Paju, Gyeonggi, near Lotte Premium Outlets Paju. Dining alone on a weekday at 1pm, the writer ordered the deuljeongsik set at 20,000 won per person and added grilled atka mackerel for 13,000 won, with self-serve wrap greens and banchan refilled for free. The well-aged gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste) and smoky jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) at Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap make it work for a family meal with parents too.

Window-seat reservation and 3-hour parking at Pangyo pork BBQ: Dwaeji

Dwaeji Mansion Pangyo Avenue France Branch is a Korean pork (Handon) barbecue restaurant on the first floor of Avenue France, a 5-minute walk from Exit 1 of Pangyo Station in Seongnam. A reservation meant a window seat with the side dishes already laid out, and staff grilled the Korean pork belly (18,000 won), the signature pork neck (18,000 won) and the minari, green onion, mushrooms and garlic, with herring roe bibimbap (9,000 won) on the side. With 3 hours of underground parking covered and baby chairs on hand, Dwaeji Mansion suits both family meals and work dinners.
