Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi is a griddle stir-fried octopus (jjukkumi) restaurant on Hanseo-ro in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi. The meal covered jjuksam — flame-grilled octopus with pork belly — wrapped in flying fish roe, perilla leaf and seaweed, plus steamed egg, fried rice and the handmade pork loin cutlet ordered for the kids, which turned out better than expected. With a self-serve bar of tteokbokki, sundae and mandu, Paldang Jikhwa Bul Jjukkumi made for a generous family meal out.

Flowerpot Cafe Gojan Branch is a large bakery café near AW Wedding Hall in Gojan-dong, Ansan, Gyeonggi. On a weekday visit around 6:30pm with a baby, the picks were Nagasaki castella at 7,500 won, mango Wakppu salt bread at 5,200 won, walnut cream cheese at 5,300 won and maron campagne at 5,800 won, plus a 2,000 won mini juice from the display case. Flowerpot Cafe had fewer breads out than on a weekend, but the wide tables, sofa seats and baby chairs made a relaxed evening with a baby easy.

Pyeongtaek octopus kalguksu with mushroom and beef: Songdam Kalguksu

Songdam Kalguksu is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Gangbyeon-ro in Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, certified as a good-value business by the local government. On a weekend lunch visit, two servings of octopus kalguksu came with extra vegetables, mushrooms and beef, followed by egg porridge, and barley rice plus corn rice bread arrived free, one each per person. There is a wait, but the portions and freebies at Songdam Kalguksu make it an easy family lunch for the price.

Bongdam Chinese restaurant seafood ganjjajang: Dongcheonhong Bongdam

Dongcheonhong Bongdam Branch is a Chinese restaurant on the second floor above the Fila store on Samcheonbyeongma-ro in Bongdam, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, and a favorite recommended often on local mom cafés. The seafood ganjjajang (noodles with black bean sauce) was 12,000 won, jjamppong-bap (spicy seafood soup with rice) 10,000 won, and the small yurinji (crispy fried chicken with citrus sauce) 28,000 won, with so much seafood it kept turning up in every bite. With private rooms, an elevator, and baby chairs, Dongcheonhong Bongdam is worth going back to for a family meal.

Yennal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Yongin Main Branch is a sundaeguk (pork and blood sausage soup) restaurant in a Yongin Central Market alley in Gimnyangjang-dong, Yongin. Three of us arrived at noon on a weekday and ordered two sundaeguk and one sundae-only bowl; eight teams were ahead of us, but turnover was quick and we were seated in about 10 minutes. The earthenware pot came packed with native-style sundae and head meat, we stirred in the rice and scraped it clean — a hearty, easy pick whenever you want hot soup and rice.
