Gwacheon hair salon: root volume perm for thin hair, One & Only Hair

One & Only Hair Gwacheon Government Complex Station is a hair salon on basement level 1 of the Hanyang Sujain officetel, a five-minute walk from Exit 1 of Gwacheon Government Complex Station in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. For long hair falling below the chest that had gone flat at the roots and dry because the strands are fine, the writer had the protein one-care clinic for 110,000 won and a root volume perm for 90,000 won, done with Ojua moisture care products after a scalp diagnosis. Even with a rough blow-dry at home the root volume came back, so morning styling took less time.

Cheoncheon-dong Suwon malatang charged only by weight: Rahongbang

Rahongbang Malatang Suwon Cheoncheon Branch is a malatang (Sichuan-style spicy hot pot) restaurant in Cheoncheon-dong, Suwon, near Starfield Suwon, where skewers and meat carry no extra fee and everything is priced by weight. The level 1.5 spicy malatang came piled with fenzi (sweet potato glass noodles), corn cheese rice cake and skewers, alongside mini guabaorou and lemon cream shrimp, and the broth tasted clean rather than greasy. Rahongbang Malatang fills up fast even at weekday lunch, so arriving early is the way to go.

Kari Bundang Jeongja Café Branch is an Indian restaurant on the basement floor of Dongyang Paragon in Jeongja-dong, Seongnam. Two people booked an 11am weekend slot and ordered the Shah Jahan brunch course at 24,000 won each, which came as naan-wich, potato soup, tandoori chicken salad, makhani with lamb, butter chicken curry, garlic and butter naan, and lassi. Bucheon pork BBQ with pickled sides and sikhye: Dwaeji Gongbang

Dwaeji Gongbang Bucheon Okgil-dong Main Branch is a pork BBQ restaurant with its own aging fridge in Okgil-dong, Sosa-gu, Bucheon. The mixed half-platter at 49,000 won brought thick pork neck plus gabrisal, rib finger meat and chewy neck skin, eaten with hairtail jeotgal (salted fish sauce), white kimchi, pickled chili strips and pickled garlic scapes, and a sikhye (sweet rice punch) for 3,000 won, while any meat order comes with a free soft tofu stew. The pickled side dishes kept every bite fresh right to the end of the meal.

Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is a gukbap (rice-and-soup) restaurant in Ingye-dong, Suwon, one minute from Exit 8 of Suwon City Hall Station. Remembering the original branch from eight years of living in Jeju, the writer ordered haejangguk (basic) with a side of dombe pork to cure the previous night's drinking, and found free extra rice, wide gaps between tables and a coffee machine after the meal. Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch is an easy, filling lunch near Suwon City Hall Station, solo diners included.

High chairs and mushroom soup at Onjeong, a Sanbon pork cutlet spot

Onjeong Gyeongyangsikdang Sanbon Academy District Branch is a Western-style pork cutlet (gyeongyangsik donkatsu) restaurant in Gunpo, Gyeonggi, in the back alley of the Sanbon academy district in front of Gwangjeong Elementary School. On this family visit the order was a pork cutlet and udon set, a buckwheat soba and pork cutlet set, a plain udon and a plain pork cutlet, with free rice refills from the self-serve bar. The mushroom soup at Onjeong was creamy enough that even a picky baby kept eating, and one table easily covers both warm-broth and cold-noodle preferences.

Ansan Gojan-dong galbi restaurant: aged LA galbi two ways, Yangsimso

Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch is a charcoal-grilled beef and pork restaurant on Danggok-ro in Gojan-dong, Ansan, Gyeonggi. On a weekend evening, two diners ordered the aged LA galbi plate served half raw and half marinated (54,000 won) plus mul naengmyeon (8,000 won), and the plate came with yukhoe and chadol doenjang jjigae included. Namyeoju Baechu is a filling stop before or after a round of golf or on a Yeoju Outlet shopping trip.

Geuttaegeujip is a Korean pork (handon) BBQ restaurant in the Uijeongbu Station food alley in Gyeonggi, open 24 hours every day of the year. After dropping the kids at kindergarten, a couple grilled one serving of fresh pork belly and one of pork jowl (hangjeongsal) on a cauldron lid at Geuttaegeujip, added soft tofu sujebi (hand-torn noodle stew), and liked it enough to order a second serving of pork belly. For parents who need a morning or lunchtime meat outing, Geuttaegeujip is an oasis.

Gapyeong IC dakgalbi restaurant with mul-makguksu: Dami Seorak

Dami Seorak Charcoal-grilled Dakgalbi is a charcoal dakgalbi (grilled chicken) and makguksu (buckwheat noodle) restaurant at 150 Hanseo-ro in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi.
