Bongdam set lunch with self-serve bar gochujang bibimbap: Hwadamga

Hwadamga is a Korean restaurant on Nangnaegi-gil in Bongdam-eup, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, serving set-menu lunches and stone-plate grilling in the evening. On a weekend drive we ordered the wood-fired mackerel set (16,000 won) and the flame-grilled pork set (16,000 won), then filled plates at the self-serve bar in the middle of the room with salad, namul (seasoned vegetables), tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty) and japchae (glass noodles) and mixed our own gochujang bibimbap. With coffee, omija (schisandra) tea and mango juice for dessert, Hwadamga is an easy Korean restaurant to bring parents to.

Shrimp rosé pane at Garlic Cook & Story, an Italian spot in Ilsan

Garlic Cook & Story Western Dome is a pasta and pizza restaurant on the 2nd floor of Western Dome in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. After a movie at the CGV cinema, the writer ordered the restaurant's popular shrimp rosé pane (pasta served in a hollowed bread bowl) with a zero-sugar cola, and the thick rosé sauce brimming over the bread and the plump whole shrimp stood out. Garlic Cook & Story runs 11:00 to 21:00 with no break time, which makes it an easy stop for a date or a lunch gathering in Ilsan.

Nokyang-dong gukbap restaurant, 3 bowls compared: Yetnal Gyeongseong

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nokyang Branch is a sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) and pork soup restaurant on Dongil-ro in Nokyang-dong, Uijeongbu. Three bowls — sundaeguk, pork gukbap and intestine gukbap — were ordered together at 11,000 won each and compared side by side, with kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) from the self-bar, coffee after the meal and a free chapssal sundae (glutinous rice blood sausage) during the opening event. Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Nokyang Branch is roomy and clean, an easy choice for eating alone in Nokyang-dong.

Gimpo café with prosciutto pizza and a no-kids garden: The Nillai

The Nillai is a large bakery brunch café on the basement level of a building at 80 Yangchonyeok-gil in Yangchon-eup, Gimpo, Gyeonggi. Visiting with friends, the writer shared prosciutto & rocket pizza, sobolo chestnut bread, sangtu pastry (a cone-shaped Korean cookie) and ruby grapefruit-cheonggyul tea, then looked around the floor-to-ceiling green views, the no-kids Nillai Garden and the media art space. For a group that wants window views, bakery and brunch in one stop, The Nillai fits well.

Dongtan Station pasta restaurant, ₩39,000 set for three: Paol

Paol Dongtan Yeoul Park Branch is a Western restaurant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, 651 meters from Exit 4 of Dongtan Station, at Dietre Pastige Building A, Unit 105. Three diners ordered the ₩39,000 pasta set and added one more pasta, which brought ragu pasta, vongole pasta, fruit salad, bread before the meal, and sous vide steak to the table. Wide spacing between tables and low lighting made Paol work equally well for a group dinner or a date.

Mulwang Reservoir Korean restaurant with elevator access in Siheung

Seolak Chueotang Hwadeok Saenggeongui Mulwang Reservoir Main Branch is a Korean restaurant inside Mulwang-dong Tosok Village by Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi, serving chueotang (loach soup) and wood-fired grilled fish. A lunch visit with parents was easy thanks to a large parking lot with a staff member helping cars in and an elevator linking the first and second floors. The thick, rich chueotang broth and a whole wood-fired mackerel made Seolak Chueotang a hearty, restorative family meal.

Gwanggyo drone show dinner at Hwial, a Suwon bar: jjamppong hotpot

Hwial Ajou University Branch is a Korean bar-restaurant on Ajou-ro in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, and an easy dinner stop before the drone show at Gwanggyo Lake Park. The beef brisket jjamppong hotpot (26,000 won) came loaded with clams, blue crab legs and squid in a broth that was rich and clean-tasting, while the yurinki (fried chicken with tangy sauce, 20,000 won) arrived with fried onions on the side. With wide seats and a quiet room, Hwial works well as a date spot for a meal and a drink before the show.

Pyeongtaek Korean restaurant lunch: banchan bar, puffed rice dessert

Hwanggeum Seafood Nurungji-tang is a Korean restaurant specialising in seafood nurungji-tang (scorched rice soup) on Manse-ro in Bijeon-dong, Pyeongtaek, in the building next to Pajuok and Roro Samgyetang. On this third visit the 300-degree seafood nurungji-tang cost 18,000 won, garlic scapes and salted squid came from the self-serve side dish bar, and dessert was puffed rice crisps popped on the machine in the restaurant. With a large shared parking lot, partitioned tables and private rooms, Hwanggeum Seafood Nurungji-tang made an easy restorative family lunch.

Crab-shell rice at an Oido kalguksu restaurant in Siheung: 52 Degree

52 Degree Kalguksu Oido Main Branch is a seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Oido-ro in Siheung, Gyeonggi. Booked through Naver Reservation and visited at 12:30 pm, the meal was the seafood hot pot kalguksu for two (42,000 won) with a bowl of rice and a cola, with abalone, octopus, crab and clams simmered in the pot and the noodles added last. Mixing rice into the crab shell and a broth that grew richer the longer it simmered were the reasons for coming back to 52 Degree Kalguksu.

With sashimi, tossed dishes, noodles and grilled fish all on one menu, Susan Jang is an easy pick for a family dinner in Gojan-dong.

Dog-friendly Korean BBQ in Hanam: five-layer pork belly, Ikkjujeokku

Ikkjujeokku is a camping-concept Korean BBQ restaurant on Gwangam-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi, with three kinds of space: a charcoal hall, a griddle hall and six outdoor tent booths. On a weekend return visit with her parents, the writer ordered 300g of five-layer pork belly (₩5,900 per 100g) with river snail ssamjang and bibim naengmyeon in the griddle hall, and dogs are welcome in the six tents as long as they are leashed. Because you can pick the space that suits your mood, Ikkjujeokku is an easy choice for a family meal out.

Namyangju café with a stray-cat shelter and plant-filled rooms: MR

MR Namyangju Main Branch is a brunch café in Hwado-eup, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, with the Bukhan River right out front. The writer visited on a weekend with her husband, shared a handmade burger and pasta, and looked around the plant-filled indoor and outdoor spaces as well as the stray-cat shelter set up in one corner outside. The view, the space and the food at MR were all satisfying, making it a place worth returning to.
