Pangyo pork belly restaurant for two on a weekend: Dwaeji Mansion

Dwaeji Mansion Pangyo Avenue France Branch is a premium pork grill restaurant on the ground floor of Pangyo Avenue France in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, right on the main road. On a weekend afternoon, two diners were seated with no wait and ordered two 150g servings of pork belly (₩36,000) plus cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), baek-kimchi noodles and a cola, for ₩57,000 in total. The juiciness, freshness and atmosphere at Dwaeji Mansion all landed, making it a 100% return visit.

The writer, her husband and their 7-year-old ordered the Shabu-shabu & Pork Belly Set at 41,500 won, which brought 300g of pork belly, 200g of thin-sliced Korean beef, kalguksu noodles and cauldron rice, then finished with ice cream and coffee from the self-bar. Wide spacing between tables and a tidy self-bar make Geobugi Dongne a weekend family dinner spot worth returning to with a child.

Fruit Forest Paju Direct Store is a fruit bingsu (shaved ice dessert) café in a standalone building at the entrance to the Simhaksan food alley in Paju, Gyeonggi. The café sits on the second floor behind floor-to-ceiling windows, and the fresh mango snow bingsu (2–3 servings) came with vanilla ice cream, cube cheese and mango purée served on the side, leaving thick fresh mango right down to the last bite. Fruit Forest also sells fresh fruit by the piece inside the shop, so it works well as a dessert stop after a Simhaksan outing.

Caffeine Focus is a bakery café in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, occupying all three floors of a building beside the Hwaseong Fortress wall path. Arriving around 6:50pm after dinner with a middle-school-age child, we took a 3rd-floor window seat and ordered an iced americano (5,500 won), a matcha latte (6,300 won) and a choco fig ciabatta (6,800 won), all in generous portions. Even in the evening, Caffeine Focus is an easy place to sit a while with a fortress-wall view.

Dongtan Station pho restaurant for after-work solo dinner: Mibundang

Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch is a Vietnamese pho restaurant on the 1st floor of the Dongtan Station Richian shopping complex in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, where every seat is bar-style and easy to take alone. Stopping by after work in the evening, the writer ordered brisket pho, sweet potato jjajo (fried spring rolls) and shrimp-wrapped potato rolls, and although there was an evening queue, tables turned over fast. Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch is worth remembering for a quiet, hot bowl of pho on your own after a long day.

Seongnam eel restaurant birthday dinner: Mansuheon Jeongja

Mansuheon Jeongja is an eel restaurant on the second floor of Baekgung Plaza 2, near Jeongja Station in Bundang, Seongnam. For a best friend's birthday, salt-grilled eel (45,000 won) and sauce-grilled eel (46,000 won) came half and half, finished with perilla oil goldongmyeon buckwheat noodles, Jirisan doenjang stew, and a bowl of rice. Mansuheon Jeongja is not cheap, but the individual tray setting and calm room made it a good fit for a celebration meal.

Hanam steak restaurant with Han River views: Bokkeriu course for two

Bokkeriu is a Western-style steak restaurant with floor-to-ceiling Han River views in Misa-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi. A weekend drive date at Bokkeriu meant the steak set for two: sweet corn soup, kelp butter sourdough, shrimp bisque pasta, a 200g Korean beef striploin steak cooked medium-rare, and cheesecake, followed by a walk at Misa Gyeongjeong Park. Bokkeriu is worth recommending as a date course just outside Seoul.
