Baekhyeon-dong Sunday night brunch and chestnut tiramisu: Meolmeol

Meolmeol Pangyo is a brunch café on the Baekhyeon-dong café street in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Arriving at 7:30pm on a Sunday with a 10-month-old baby, the writer ordered endive salad at 19,000 won, Grandma's lasagna at 23,000 won and truffle baby potato fritters at 9,000 won, and the owner apologised for slightly overcooked lasagna with a complimentary chestnut tiramisu. With baby chairs and one hour of free parking at the Baekhyeon-dong public lot, Meolmeol Pangyo works well for a late brunch dinner with a baby.

Yongin sundaeguk restaurant with pyeonyuk platter: Yetnal Gyeongseong

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Gorim Branch is a Korean restaurant specialising in sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) and pyeonyuk (sliced boiled pork) on Hanteo-ro in Cheoin-gu, Yongin. After dropping their baby at daycare, the writer and her husband ordered one bowl of sundaeguk (₩11,000) and a small pyeonyuk platter (₩19,000) with bottles of cheongha rice wine — the pyeonyuk alone was enough for two, and broth came with it as standard. Clean broth with no gamey smell and big pieces of blood sausage make Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk a place worth becoming a regular at.

Hwajeong sashimi bowl restaurant: salmon special 14,000 won, Min Cook

Min Cook Misoyaki is a Japanese grilled fish and rice bowl restaurant in Hwajeong, Goyang, Gyeonggi, on the first floor of the building across from Hwajeong E-mart. On a weekday lunch visit the raw salmon rice bowl in the special size (14,000 won) arrived piled with salmon and flying fish roe, alongside handmade shrimp tempura and salt-grilled black cod that was smoky and tender. For the price, Min Cook Misoyaki's salmon bowl and black cod combination is worth a return trip.

Madam Hao is a Hanoi street food-style Vietnamese restaurant on Worldcup-ro 193beon-gil, near Ajou University and Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Stopping in for lunch on the way out of town, the writer ordered beef brisket pho for 11,000 won, pad thai for 12,500 won and a cola at the kiosk for a 25,500 won total, and spooning the pad thai onto the shrimp chips served alongside gave the noodles a whole new flavour. Hot broth and sweet-sour noodles made an easy pair to alternate between.

Large Uijeongbu café with a wood-chip forest walking path: Forerest

Forerest is a large garden-style café in Nogyang-dong, Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Inside the tall gabled-roof hall, Forerest serves a 16-hour aged chocolate Basque cheesecake, which we paired with an iced americano and an iced vanilla latte before walking the wood-chip path around the outdoor lawn. The route from dessert indoors straight out to the garden works beautifully, and Forerest stays open until midnight, so it doubles as a night café.

Barley rice hanjeongsik by Gyeongan Stream in Chowol, Gwangju: Bomseol

Bomseol is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant serving hot-stone rice and barley rice right by Gyeongan Stream in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. On the way to Yangpyeong I stopped in for the Bomseol Set (15,000 won), which comes with hot-stone rice, banchan side dishes, braised kodari (half-dried pollack), cheonggukjang stew and unlimited barley rice; the side dishes were not too salty and the scorched rice in the pot was still boiling hot. For a hanjeongsik or barley rice meal in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, Bomseol is a generous plate for the price.

Chicken kalguksu near Bokjeong Station, Seongnam: Cheongdam Dak

Cheongdam Dak Kalguksu Seongnam is a Korean restaurant near Bokjeong Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, serving chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) that you order with green onion topping, seaweed topping or in a spicy version.
