The spread on this visit ran from beef bulgogi, kimchi-pork stir-fry, japchae and seasonal namul to janchi-guksu, followed by self-serve toast made with bread and jam, ramen, rice cake, sikhye and coffee. Korean BBQ terrace window seats in Siheung for 4: Bulhyangjip

Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch is a charcoal bulgogi restaurant set in the woods by Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi. Four of us, including my parents, took a terrace window table and ordered 4 servings of charcoal scallion pancake bulgogi (63,600 won), 2 servings of charcoal gochujang bulgogi (31,800 won), countryside grandma doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew, 5,000 won) and Bulhyangjip's bibim noodles (spicy cold noodles, 9,000 won), refilling side dishes at the self-serve bar in the middle of the hall. Bulhyangjip is an easy, filling family lunch after a drive around Mulwang Reservoir.

Gwanggyo bossam restaurant with seaweed rice balls: Cheongdam Jokbal

Grill-top stir-fried kimchi at Uijeongbu pork galbi spot: Manpo Galbi

Manpo Galbi Uijeongbu Main Branch is a charcoal pork galbi restaurant on Beomgol-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, grilling 100% pork ribs marinated in a fruit-based sauce. Hwajeong Station Japanese restaurant salmon bowl set: Min Cook Dasima

Min Cook Dasima is a 25-year-old Japanese restaurant certified as a Korean "100-year store," on the second floor across from E-mart by Hwajeong Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the sake-don (salmon rice bowl) set meal and added a Korean pork (Handon) sirloin cutlet and three pieces of aged flounder sushi: the salmon was thick with no fishy taste, and the cutlet was crisp outside and juicy inside, served with cabbage in fruit sauce. Ordered as a set meal, it also comes with egg porridge, tempura and clear soup, making it a generous lunch near Hwajeong Station.
