Aged samgyeopsal at Mat Chandeul, an Okjeong pork belly restaurant

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is an aged-pork grill restaurant on Okjeong-dong-ro 7da-gil in Okjeong, Yangju, Gyeonggi. Three servings of 14-day aged fresh samgyeopsal (pork belly) came with the lunch special of two servings of stone-pot rice and doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), and staff grilled the meat at the table, adding aged kimchi and yuzu radish salad so no bite tasted the same. With basement parking in the building plus T-map parking, Mat Chandeul is an easy drive for a filling pork belly lunch.

Suwon cutlet restaurant with parking: pork cutlet curry, Gyewondang

Gyewondang Ingye Branch is a hand-breaded chicken cutlet and Korean rice-set restaurant in Ingye-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon. Arriving just after the weekday lunch rush, the writer ordered pork cutlet curry and the Gyewon Set with assorted cutlets and a mini chicken cutlet, a 12,500 won set, and found the 2-3 parking spots right in front of Gyewondang and the unlimited self-serve soda bar the most convenient parts. Gyewondang Ingye Branch is an easy choice in Ingye-dong when you want pork cutlet without worrying about parking.

Korean BBQ terrace window seats in Siheung for 4: Bulhyangjip

Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch is a charcoal bulgogi restaurant set in the woods by Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi. Four of us, including my parents, took a terrace window table and ordered 4 servings of charcoal scallion pancake bulgogi (63,600 won), 2 servings of charcoal gochujang bulgogi (31,800 won), countryside grandma doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew, 5,000 won) and Bulhyangjip's bibim noodles (spicy cold noodles, 9,000 won), refilling side dishes at the self-serve bar in the middle of the hall. Bulhyangjip is an easy, filling family lunch after a drive around Mulwang Reservoir.

Gwanggyo bossam restaurant with seaweed rice balls: Cheongdam Jokbal

Cheongdam Jokbal Gwanggyo Sanghyeon Branch is a jokbal (braised pork trotter) and bossam (boiled pork with wraps) restaurant near Sanghyeon Station and the Gwanggyo law-office district in Yongin, Gyeonggi, with an outdoor yajang seating area. On an early-evening visit the order was the tender bossam in the medium size plus a kimgaru jumeokbap (rice ball with seaweed flakes), along with the makguksu (chilled buckwheat noodles) served free to dine-in guests. The mild pork with kimchi and dried radish that are not overly sweet makes Cheongdam Jokbal a reliable bossam pick near Sanghyeon Station.

Pyeongtaek Station revolving sushi, ₩2,100 draft beer: Mikado Sushi

Mikado Sushi Pyeongtaek Station Branch is a revolving sushi restaurant a 7-minute walk from Exit 1 of Pyeongtaek Station in Gyeonggi. Draft beer is 400cc for 2,100 won and corkage is free, so the writer brought a bottle of Japanese sake, Zaku, to drink with sushi picked off the rail and ordered by QR code. Both the raw fish sushi and the sauce-topped sushi were good enough for a solo 17-plate return visit.

Grill-top stir-fried kimchi at Uijeongbu pork galbi spot: Manpo Galbi

Manpo Galbi Uijeongbu Main Branch is a charcoal pork galbi restaurant on Beomgol-ro in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, grilling 100% pork ribs marinated in a fruit-based sauce. A family of three came on a Saturday evening with a Naver reservation and ordered 3 servings of pork galbi, pudding-style steamed egg and rice, and the table arrived with radish salad, fried mushrooms, potato salad, japchae (glass noodles) and yukhoe (beef tartare). The stir-fried kimchi cooked right on the grill and the free house-made mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) that comes with any meat order were the highlights at Manpo Galbi.

Hwajeong Station Japanese restaurant salmon bowl set: Min Cook Dasima

Min Cook Dasima is a 25-year-old Japanese restaurant certified as a Korean "100-year store," on the second floor across from E-mart by Hwajeong Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the sake-don (salmon rice bowl) set meal and added a Korean pork (Handon) sirloin cutlet and three pieces of aged flounder sushi: the salmon was thick with no fishy taste, and the cutlet was crisp outside and juicy inside, served with cabbage in fruit sauce. Ordered as a set meal, it also comes with egg porridge, tempura and clear soup, making it a generous lunch near Hwajeong Station.

Samgyeopsal restaurant in Yeoju: 3 meat combos at Hwassi2192

Hwassi2192 Nam-Yeoju Branch 2 is an oak-wood-fired pork restaurant on Yeojunam-ro in Ganam-eup, Yeoju, Gyeonggi. Two of us visited on a Sunday at 6pm and ordered two servings of oak-fired samgyeopsal (pork belly), one serving of pork neck, chadol doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew with beef brisket, 4,000 won) and rice (2,000 won), then ate them the way the restaurant suggests in its recommended combos 1, 2 and 3. With a wide parking lot and staff who grill the meat for you, Hwassi2192 is an easy place to eat after a trip to the Yeoju outlets or a nearby golf course.

Anyang Bisan-dong grilled fish set with unlimited tteokbokki self-bar

Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch is an oven-grilled fish restaurant on the first floor of the Kids Mom Center in Bisan-dong, Anyang, Gyeonggi. With Spanish mackerel sold out, we ordered two Atka mackerel grilled fish sets (18,000 won each) and kept refilling tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) at the all-you-can-eat self-bar before mixing a bibimbap to finish. Between the big slabs of Atka mackerel and the generous self-bar, two people left Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo completely stuffed.

La Cuesta Gwangju is a two-story bakery café on Gyeongchung-daero in Gonjiam-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Guests can borrow a picnic basket and mat and drink their coffee in the outdoor garden, pairing sausage bread, corn bread and garlic baguette with a La Cuesta latte topped with fresh cream. Americanos come with free refills and a parking attendant is on site, so La Cuesta is an easy stop after Hwadam Botanic Garden or a round of golf.

Namyangju Bukhan River café for a mom-and-me drive: Waltz and Dr. Mahn

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is a large riverside café on Bukhangang-ro in Joan-myeon, Namyangju, Gyeonggi, paired with Korea's first coffee museum. On a drive with her mother, the writer ordered a Jamaica Blue Mountain hand drip for 20,000 won, an Honor and Chevalier parfait for 18,000 won, and opera cake for 9,000 won, then rested to classical music beside floor-to-ceiling views of the Bukhan River. The prices looked steep at first, but the coffee, the service and the view made Waltz and Dr. Mahn a place she would return to.

Haenggung-dong course restaurant with 1-hour free parking: Hado, Suwon

Hado is a course-dining restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro in Haenggung-dong, Suwon. Hado's basic course costs 45,000 won and runs from pea and sweet shrimp apple tart appetizers to a squid ink pasta and a bisque pasta chosen separately and shared, then a chicken breast steak and Earl Grey ice cream. The lot right beside Hado gives one hour of free parking with a meal, so it works well as a date spot if you drive.
