Kalguksu dinner with a kid and tteokgalbi in Seongnam: Gangnam Gyoja

Gangnam Gyoja Bundang Seohyeon Branch is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant near Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, on the 2nd floor of the building next to Daebbang Arcade in the Rodeo area. Dining with an elementary-school child, the writer ordered one kalguksu, a plate of 10 gyoza dumplings and 2 pieces of tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), and found the chicken broth rich and the kimchi mild enough for a kid. Gangnam Gyoja is an easy pick near Seohyeon Station for a warm bowl of soup with a child on a chilly day.

Chat Baker Brunch & Bakery Café is a 500-pyeong (about 1,650 m²) brunch and bakery café inside 512 Square on Seodong-daero in Gongdo-eup, Anseong, Gyeonggi. This visit covered both floors of Chat Baker and an iced Americano with olive ciabatta, salt bread, cheddar cheese rice salt bread, a thousand-layer croissant and a pizza ciabatta sandwich, in a room of floor-to-ceiling windows, plants and an LP record concept. Near Anseong Farm Land, Chat Baker is a good stop when you want bread and a long, unhurried rest at the same time.

Secondhand fashion shop in Yongin: ₩99,000 sneakers at TOKYO USED

TOKYO USED Flagship Store is a large secondhand and vintage fashion shop in Suji-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. TOKYO USED carries everything from everyday brands to luxury clothing, bags, sunglasses and scarves under one roof, and on this visit a Comme des Garçons x Converse collaboration sneaker was on sale for 99,000 won. The size was sold out, but the pieces at TOKYO USED were kept so well they barely felt secondhand.

Paju bakery café with cinnamon bread and pistachio strawberry: Barirus

Barirus is a large two-floor bakery café on Bongseosan-ro in Paju-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi. Pulled in by the building's grand exterior while out on a drive, the writer tried the cinnamon bread and croissants baked fresh every morning, the house-roasted americano and the seasonal signature pistachio strawberry drink, then looked around the teepee zone on the outdoor lawn terrace. The bread, the drinks and the mood at Barirus were all good enough to come back with parents.

Dongtan shabu-shabu restaurant, half-and-half broth: Pyeonbaek Hoegwan

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch is an all-you-can-eat hinoki-steam and shabu-shabu restaurant on the 2nd floor of Grand Vians Star by Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. The writer came with her sister, who had not eaten shabu-shabu in 10 years, and her niece, ordering the broth half mild and half spicy mushroom, then working through hinoki steam, self-serve side dishes, fresh spring rolls, knife-cut noodles, egg porridge and misutgaru (roasted grain drink). With a kids' playroom on site, Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Dongtan Branch was a no-fail choice for a family meal.

Omokcheon sundaeguk restaurant in Suwon for a hangover: Gohyangok

Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch is a sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) restaurant beside Gosaek Bridge in Suwon, Gyeonggi, a 7-minute drive from Omokcheon and Gosaek stations. After drinking until dawn the night before, the writer arrived at 1 p.m. on a Saturday for siraegi sundaeguk (dried radish green soup) at 11,000 won and the spicy sundaeguk pyeonbaek set at 19,000 won, and the perilla-scented siraegi bowl was gentle enough to settle the stomach — a proper hangover cure. Gohyangok was full with three groups waiting, but parking for more than 30 cars and an unlimited self-serve side dish bar make it worth a return trip.

Katsu restaurant in Pangyo for kimchi cheese katsu nabe: Godai Kitchen

Godai Kitchen Lunch Special is a Japanese set-meal restaurant on basement level 1 of Samhwan Hi-Pex Building A in Pangyo, Seongnam, Gyeonggi. On a Saturday visit with a child, the writer ordered kimchi cheese katsu nabe at 12,000 won, the pork loin katsu curry set at 12,000 won, shrimp chicken tendon with mini udon at 12,500 won and the pork loin katsu with zaru soba set at 14,800 won, and weekend parking was free with no time limit. Handmade Korean pork katsu and tempura that stayed crisp to the last bite make Godai Kitchen an easy lunch stop with kids.

Kid-friendly lamb restaurant near Dasan Station, Namyangju: Jin 1926

Jin 1926 Dasan Branch is a lamb specialty restaurant on the second floor of the building in front of Exit 1 of Dasan Station (Line 8) in Namyangju, Gyeonggi. A pregnant mom and her child ordered the signature lamb ribs and lamb chuck flap (salchisal), and staff grilled the meat at the table and reheated it once it cooled, so the child happily gnawed the ribs straight off the bone. The pollock roe gondeure rice paired so well with the lamb at Jin 1926 that one bowl felt like too few.

Pyeongtaek BBQ restaurant for pork jowl and cheek cuts: Okryeon Galbi

Okryeon Galbi Pyeongtaek Main Branch is a yuzu-aged pork specialty-cut restaurant on the 1st floor of Golden Tower on Bijeon 5-ro in Sosabeol, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. This visit ordered two servings of yuzu-aged kkodeulsal (chewy pork jowl) with one serving of bbolsal (pork cheek) to compare the springy crunch and the tender softness side by side, plus homemade doenjang stew and Hamheung mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles) topped with yukjeon (beef egg fritters). If you want something other than the usual samgyeopsal, Okryeon Galbi is worth remembering.

Moran Station pork belly restaurant: 650g B set for two, Mat Chandeul

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Moran Branch is a pork belly restaurant on Dungchon-daero near Moran Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, where staff grill the meat at your table. Two diners ordered the B set (650g of meat) split half pork belly and half pork neck with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and ate it with grilled baek-kimchi (white kimchi), wood ear mushrooms and mukbap (acorn jelly in broth). Swapping side dish combinations kept it interesting, and 650g was an easy amount even for two big eaters.

A family of three, including a husband just back from a business trip, came for weekend lunch and ordered one of each — house steak, aged kimchi pasta with seasoned meat crumbs, and shrimp pilaf — to share. All three dishes satisfied, and first-timers should start with the aged kimchi pasta, where grilled aged kimchi is eaten together with the noodles.

Kid-friendly white broth shabu-kalguksu for two in Yongin: Yun Ujae

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is a shabu-kalguksu (hot pot with knife-cut noodles) restaurant in Gogi-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. On a weekend visit with children, the order was the white broth mild shabu-kalguksu for two at 23,000 won, a crispy seafood pajeon (green onion pancake) at 16,000 won and a bowl of rice at 1,500 won, for 40,500 won in total, eaten in order of meat and vegetables, flat noodles, then fried rice. A wide parking lot, baby chairs and a gentle broth with no heat made Yun Ujae an easy family meal out.
