Couple brunch date in Pangyo: basil cream sandwich, Eight Years

Eight Years Pangyo is a terrace brunch restaurant at the entrance to the Baekhyeon-dong café street in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. On a couple's brunch date, the writer and her husband ordered the handmade basil cream sauce sandwich and the cream gnocchi, both made with ingredients brought in daily from Garak Market for a mild, wholesome flavor. The wait ran 20-30 minutes at the lunch peak and the cream sauce was slightly salty, but Eight Years Pangyo is still worth recommending for brunch on the Baekhyeon-dong café street.

Ansan hanwoo BBQ: 300g sliced striploin, yukhoe bibimbap, Cheongnyuok

Cheongnyuok is a hanwoo (Korean beef) grill restaurant in the Bandalseom area of Danwon-gu, Ansan, Gyeonggi. The order was 300g of thinly sliced hanwoo striploin with a yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef rice bowl) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) set plus a cheese bomb steamed egg, served with tidy side dishes such as mul-kimchi and soy-marinated crab and a self-serve banchan bar. With free parking, private rooms, clothing stylers and baby chairs, Cheongnyuok works well for a family meal or a company dinner.

Lamb chop steak set at Polia, a Gimpo Unyang-dong restaurant

Restaurant Polia is a steak, pasta and wood-fired pizza restaurant in Unyang-dong, Gimpo, Gyeonggi. On a weekday evening, two adults and a 33-month-old ordered the lamb chop steak set for 40,500 won, carbonara for 19,900 won and gorgonzola pizza for 22,500 won plus two drinks, for a total of 92,900 won over about an hour, and the toddler — deep in a picky-eating slump — ate better than she had in ages, from the garlic bread to the pizza. With a high chair, kids' tableware and free parking right out front, Restaurant Polia is a solid pick for a family dinner in Gimpo, and the writer would return 100%.

Oido seafood steam pot with whole squid and blue crab: Crab Yasijang

Crab Yasijang Geobukseom Main Branch is an ocean-view seafood restaurant on the ground floor of the tallest building in the Geobukseom area of Siheung, near Oido. On a Sunday afternoon two sisters ordered the medium whole squid and blue crab seafood roe steam pot with a Suntory draft and a Cass draft, and the meal also came with mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), corn cheese, honey butter blue crab tteok skewers, napa cabbage salad and a mountain of clam soup. The squid and blue crab meat were plump and seasoned just right, making Crab Yasijang an easy way to enjoy a sea view without travelling far.

Yongin Korean buffet with chicken and pork cutlet refills: Daedong

Daedong Korean Buffet & Dosirak is an all-you-can-eat Korean buffet in Yangji-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, where adults pay 9,000 won. Visiting with a friend, I refilled the fried chicken, pork cutlet, braised tofu and geotjeori kimchi (fresh cabbage kimchi) several times, then finished with janchi-guksu (banquet noodles), self-serve ramen, toast and sikhye (sweet rice drink). The side dishes at Daedong taste like home cooking rather than heavily salted restaurant food, which made it a genuinely good-value meal.

Yongin pizzeria near HUFS: margherita vs miso porcini, Bonaricetta

Bonaricetta is a wood-fired pizza restaurant in Mohyeon-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, right in front of the Global Campus of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Skipping pasta, we ordered only two pizzas — the Bufala Margherita at 22,000 won and the Miso Porcini at 30,000 won — to focus on the dough and toppings, and the two were completely different styles: the margherita fresh and light, the Miso Porcini deep with mushroom flavour. One classic pizza plus one distinctive pizza turned out to be the right combination for a first visit to Bonaricetta.

Sotbap Hansang is a sotbap (hot pot rice) and hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant on Sangdeok-ro in Idong-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi. Sotbap Hansang has a spacious hall, a free on-site parking lot and a self-service corner that includes porridge and soup, and the meal here was the soy-marinated female crab set, followed by coffee at the self-serve café in the same building. It is an easy pick for a family meal out, with no worries about parking or finding a table.

Bada Super Haemul Cheonha Jogaegui, Geobukseom Oido Branch is a sea-view grilled and steamed clam restaurant on the 3rd floor of a building on Geobukseom-ro in Siheung, Gyeonggi. Booked for the sunset hour, the grilled clams small (for 2) at 54,000 won arrived as a tray packed with several kinds of clams — more than would fit on the grill at once — with cheese tteokbokki served as a basic side. Bada Super is an easy meal stop to build into a Geobukseom drive.

Pangyo sushi omakase restaurant with mini kaisendon: Suyori Sikdang

Suyori Sikdang is a Japanese omakase restaurant on the basement level of a building a 10-minute walk from Exit 1 of Pangyo Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The 45,000 won lunch course runs 18 dishes, from gamtae seaweed and mushroom porridge to a mini kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) and yuzu sorbet, and the chef spotted that the guest was left-handed and turned each piece of sushi around without being asked. For the price, Suyori Sikdang is a generous, quietly attentive omakase that pleased both the writer and her parents.
