Craving something warm on a cooling commute home in Giheung

The weather's gotten noticeably cooler, and I suddenly craved a hot broth. My commute home felt properly chilly, so I went to eat at Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu. I had the full set all the way to the porridge, and it was so satisfying and warming.

The atmosphere and parking

The restaurant itself is quite spacious, so it seemed great for group gatherings or family meals, and I really loved the clean, white-and-wood-toned interior haha.

The menu — spicy, clear, and perilla mushroom kalguksu

This is the menu at Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Giheung Station Branch. They sell three types of mushroom kalguksu (noodle soup) — spicy, clear, or perilla — and it's a shabu-shabu place where you can choose your preferred broth and add toppings to your taste.

Through the Naver receipt review event you can get a free canned drink, so be sure to take part.

Sitting right by the burner can get a bit warm as you eat, but each table thoughtfully has its own little fan.

Spicy mushroom kalguksu for two + lotus root starch noodles

We only ordered lotus root starch noodles as an extra topping. When you order spicy mushroom kalguksu, dumplings and kalguksu noodles come prepared as standard, along with spicy fresh kimchi as a side dish.

For the spicy mushroom kalguksu, the noodles come prepared separately, so you eat your fill of minari (water dropwort), meat and other toppings first, then add more broth and boil the noodles in it.

I personally love the tender texture of lotus root starch noodles, so I arranged them nicely, and I added the dumplings in around when the broth started to boil.

We chose beef for the meat. Even with just this much in it, the portion is really generous, but once you're at Deungchon, you absolutely have to finish with the porridge.

As the meat was cooking through, I took a sip of the broth first — and yep, nicely spicy and good.

I dipped the well-cooked meat with minari lightly in wasabi soy sauce — the combination of fragrant minari and meat soaked in the spicy broth was so delicious.

Especially this tangy, freshly-seasoned kimchi went so well with the shabu kalguksu that I couldn't stop eating it.

Timing the starch noodles and potatoes just right

This is the lotus root starch noodles I love. You have to cook the starch noodles until they wobble for 7–8 minutes to get them perfectly done.

Potatoes taste best cooked about 5 minutes longer than the starch noodles, until they're soft and tender.

From kalguksu noodles to porridge — the carb relay

After eating a good amount of the ingredients, I added more broth and put in the kalguksu noodles.

The kalguksu noodles were just right eaten right before they got too soft. They pair perfectly with kimchi, so I asked for a kimchi refill halfway through!

I finished with the ultimate boss of the carb relay — the porridge. I left a bit of broth, added the prepared porridge kit, and simmered it on low heat.

You know it's the best when it's bubbling away, reaches just the right thickness, and you take a hot-hot bite blowing on it the whole time, right?

On the way out, I noticed they even had Yakult ready. The owner really has a knack for these little touches, haha.
