Sea urchin sushi add-on at Bangi-dong sushi spot: Susi Seon Bangi

In short

Susi Seon Bangi Branch is a neighborhood sushi restaurant tucked inside the Bangi-dong food alley in Songpa, Seoul. Before catching a fashion show in Jamsil, the writer ordered a special sushi set and a cold soba pork cutlet set, then added sea urchin and egg sushi plus a mini pork cutlet, and was impressed by the sushi arranged in menu order and the porridge served alongside. Great value for tidy Japanese food near Jamsil or Bangi-dong.

A few days ago I met a big-time CEO running about ₩40 billion a year in revenue and had a deep four-hour conversation with him — by the end I felt totally drained.

Trading insights from the cutthroat world of business is genuinely valuable, but it definitely burns a lot of energy, and a heavy tiredness set in afterward. Dragging my tired body around in search of a little mental rest, I headed to a fashion week event happening in Jamsil.

Fashion week event held in Jamsil

When I went to a fashion week event for the first time earlier this year, it felt unfamiliar but pretty fun, and this visit gave me that same unique enjoyment. Honestly, I think I went less for the clothes or fashion itself and more to listen to the stylish music playing at the venue. This Jamsil fashion week ran for only about 20 minutes, but I picked up a few trendy tracks I really liked, so I was quite satisfied. The outfits were a bit hard to parse and the dancers in the back didn't seem like a professional dance team, but meeting old friends I hadn't seen in a while and chatting over a cold beer made all that heavy fatigue disappear in an instant.

Finding Susi Seon Bangi Branch in the Bangi-dong food alley

Before properly watching the fashion show, I went looking for a place to quickly fill my empty stomach and headed to the nearby Bangi-dong food alley. It was almost my first time really walking deep into the Bangi-dong alleys, and with all the colorful signs and people strolling the streets in high spirits, it felt like stepping into a whole new world of energy. Among the countless restaurants, the one that caught my eye was Susi Seon Bangi Branch, known as a 'Bangi-dong sushi spot.'

The in-store menu and delivery menu are different

From the outside, the place gave off a cute, warm feeling — like a cozy little spot run by a neighborhood couple. Once I sat down and looked at the menu, I noticed the delivery menu and the in-store menu were laid out a bit differently. I found myself thinking it would be nice if the differences between the store menu and delivery menu were marked more clearly for visitors who find the place through a search.

Special sushi and cold soba pork cutlet set

After some deliberation, I ordered the hearty special sushi and a refreshing cold soba pork cutlet set. Moments later, when the food was set on the table, I couldn't help but let out an admiring sigh at how good it looked.

Sushi served in the order printed on the menu

At the very bottom, flounder! Above that, salmon! Above that, tuna!! It comes out in exactly the order listed on the menu. I love little details like this.

Of course people in the industry already know all this, but regular outside customers don't — we have no idea what's what. This kind of detail is great!!

The tuna seemed to have a slightly different color somehow — I'm not sure what the difference means, but personally I thought it tasted great! It didn't have that off taste you sometimes get from sushi places that just buy up big pre-cut sashimi sets and resell them — at least that's how it tasted to me! (If any experts can explain, I'd appreciate it!!)

Adding on mini pork cutlet, sea urchin, and egg sushi

The sushi arranged neatly on the long wooden tray looked really beautiful. From the fresh flounder to the sea urchin that melted softly in my mouth, to the savory salmon, each piece really let the ingredient's own flavor shine through, and I was thoroughly satisfied. Enjoying the sushi got my appetite going, so I ordered extra mini pork cutlet, sea urchin sushi, and egg sushi to round out a full, satisfying meal. The combination of the crispy-battered pork cutlet with the cool soba was excellent too.

A neighborhood sushi spot worth rooting for

Above all, the woman who seemed to be the owner's wife treated us kindly and warmly throughout the meal, which warmed my heart. Even in tough times like these, small business owners who quietly keep serving food made with care naturally earn my support. This is a great-value spot where you can enjoy excellent sushi and set meals at reasonable prices, so if you find yourself near Jamsil or Bangi-dong craving tidy Japanese food, I'd recommend giving Susi Seon Bangi Branch a visit.
