Jeongjeong-a Sikdang Jeongwang Branch is a Korean restaurant in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung that serves dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken stew) as its main dish. Over a dinner with kids, the medium dakbokkeumtang (29,000 won) came at spice level 1, alongside set menu 2 (cockles plus boiled squid, 23,000 won) and an extra portion of glass noodles. For a group of three or four adults, the medium dakbokkeumtang and set 2 together make a generous meal.

Hwaseong meat restaurant: pick pork belly by weight label, Morakmorak

Morakmorak Jeongyuk Sikdang is a butcher-style meat restaurant on Yeokgol-jungang-ro in Namyang-eup, near Hwaseong City Hall in Gyeonggi. On a fall weekend visit with family, the writer chose domestic raw pork belly and pork neck straight from the case at the weight and price printed on each label, had the cuts pre-grilled at the table, and went back for unlimited tacos from the self-bar and hanwoo bone-broth ramyeon, alongside a complimentary side of yukhoe (raw beef tartare) with egg yolk. Wrapping the pork in tortillas with guacamole and nacho chips made Morakmorak a satisfying family dinner in Namyang, Hwaseong.

Siheung sushi restaurant: omakase aged sushi set at Crab Yasijang

Crab Yasijang Geobukseom Main Branch is a crab and aged-sashimi restaurant on the ground floor of a seafront building along the Geobukseom trail in Siheung, Gyeonggi. The order was the omakase aged sushi and the Pohang-style live abalone mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) set, both served with neat sides such as fried blue crab and baby napa cabbage salad, in front of a wide-open sea view through the windows. Pom Pilates is a small Pilates studio on the 5th floor of Nakseng Building on Seopangyo-ro in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Completely new to Pilates, the writer took a 1:1, 50-minute trial class taught directly by the studio director, following five or six moves on the Cadillac and the reformer, and came away feeling worked but refreshed rather than wrecked. Pom Pilates suits Pangyo Pilates beginners who want to keep learning from one steady teacher.

Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch is a spicy braised rib (galbijjim) restaurant on the 2nd floor of Cheonji Officetel, within walking distance of Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Two servings of pork galbijjim were ordered at the mild level, with rice cake and glass noodles included as standard add-ins, plus steamed egg and fried rice to finish, and the banchan came with unlimited refills. For spicy braised ribs rounded off with steamed egg and fried rice, Gimcheongja Maeun Galbijjim Seohyeon Station Branch is the right call.

Late brunch army stew before outlet shopping in Paju: Mom's Uijeongbu

Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae is an 80-seat budae jjigae (army stew) and iron-plate dakgalbi restaurant on Pilseung-ro in Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju, close to Heyri Village and Provence. After checking out of a pension and before heading to the outlets, the writer used the kiosk to order two servings of traditional budae jjigae at 11,000 won per person as a late brunch, and the broth was deep and rich enough that rice went into the pot at the end. Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae makes a filling lunch stop on a day out in Paju.

Weekend family brunch café in Baekhyeon-dong, Pangyo: Eight Years

Eight Years Pangyo is a brunch café with a terrace next to the park on Baekhyeon-dong's café street in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. On a weekend morning with family, the avocado chicken ciabatta sandwich (14,000 won), a bagel, a café latte and an americano were all eaten out on the terrace, with park sounds and passing dogs in the background.
