Ttukbaegi-e Dameun Italia (뚝배기에 담은 이탈리아) Yongin is a pizza and pasta restaurant on Nampyeong-ro in Yangji-eup, Yongin, Gyeonggi. The order was pepperoni pizza and pane cream pasta: a chewy dough baked in the oven, generous cheese, and a bread bowl filled with cream sauce. Ttukbaegi-e Dameun Italia is worth noting when you want pizza and pasta in one sitting before or after a day at Yangji Pine CC or Jisan Resort.

Dongtan chicken restaurant with boneless ganpama: Fix Chicken

Fix Chicken Dongtan Central Park Branch is a pub-style chicken restaurant near Dongtan Central Park and Gaenari Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. A couple ordered the boneless half-and-half with the original Fix Chicken and ganpama (soy sauce, scallion and garlic), and the original surprised them with a brine flavor they had never tasted before, while the ganpama worked best eaten with the shredded scallion piled on top. The two of them cleared everything, including the free school-gate-style tteokbokki that comes with every order.

Peach milk cake at Cafe Imchori, a dessert café in Gapyeong

Cafe Imchori is a dessert café on Cheonggun-ro in Sangmyeon, Gapyeong, near the Garden of Morning Calm. Over an iced americano and iced and hot café lattes, I tried Cafe Imchori's peach milk cake and salted chocolate financier, and liked that the desserts are made in-house with real dairy cream. Cafe Imchori is an easy coffee-and-cake stop before or after the arboretum.

Misa-dong samgyetang in Hanam: black sesame and sous vide, Baekheukdam

Baekheukdam is a samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) restaurant on Misa-dong-ro in Hanam, Gyeonggi, known for unusual versions such as black sesame samgyetang and herbal sous vide samgyetang. On a weekend visit with her parents, the writer shared black sesame samgyetang, herbal sous vide samgyetang and baek-ongsimi (chewy rice dumpling soup), and all three differed in broth, tenderness and texture. If you want a restorative meal more interesting than standard samgyetang, Baekheukdam is the place.

Guri bar hidden above Doldari Market: Sichuan seafood noodles at Muje

Muje (무제) is a cozy, mood-lit bar tucked away on the second floor of an alley inside Doldari Market in Guri, Gyeonggi. Muje's Sichuan seafood stir-fried noodles and spicy chicken yurinji (fried chicken with soy dressing) made excellent drinking snacks, though the extra order of soupy tteokbokki had disappointingly firm rice cakes. If you want a quiet, atmospheric bar in Guri, Muje is the answer.

Myeonsikdang Suji Government Office branch is a Japanese noodle restaurant about 55 meters from Exit 2 of Sujigucheong Station in Yongin, Gyeonggi. On a hot day the writer had lunch here, ordering the pork loin tonkatsu with mini cold soba set and the chogye naengsoba (cold chicken soba) with mini fillet katsu set, alternating crispy cutlet with chilled noodles and finding the chogye naengsoba generously topped with chicken. With solo bar seats and baby chairs, Myeonsikdang Suji is an easy stop whether you eat alone or bring a child.

The squid pancake, 22,900 won on its own, was the most memorable dish for its sheer amount of squid, and the 2 hours of free parking in the building made the visit easy.

Hwanggeum Seafood Nurungji-tang is a Korean restaurant at 160 Bijeon 4-ro in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi, specializing in seafood nurungji-tang (scorched-rice soup) poured over a hot stone pot at the table. The writer ordered the Abalone King Nurungji-tang at 26,000 won per person and the Jirisan Black Pork Sticky-Rice Tangsuyuk at 24,000 won, and liked the contrast between the soft nurungji and the chewy sweet-and-sour pork. Hwanggeum Seafood Nurungji-tang is worth a stop in Pyeongtaek when you want a hot meal beyond the usual gukbap or jjigae.

Anyang café with fresh fig ade and pumpkin campagne toast: Notten

Notten is a brunch café newly opened on the Dongpyeon-maeul café street in Anyang, Gyeonggi. Visiting with my mother, we ordered the seasonal campagne French toast, a sour-forward americano made with Momos Coffee beans, and a fig ade topped with half a fresh fig; Notten's handmade campagne uses 100% Korean wheat mixed with sweet pumpkin for a nutty, clean taste. The owner serves and clears the tables in person, and Notten felt like a café worth becoming a regular at.

Three friends shared lamb rib boil for two (48,000 won), lamb rib BBQ for two (50,000 won), mala bibimbap and drinks at an outdoor sidewalk table for 118,000 won total. The boiled lamb falls off the bone at a touch of the chopsticks, and ordering it alongside the smoky sweet-salty BBQ was the right call at Yangmadam Bangchon Lamb.
